My Sunday Song – “Game On” by Disciple

For My Sunday Song #478, we are going to get you on your feet and ready to fight with “Game On” by the Christian metal band Disciple. The song is off their sixth album called “Scars Remain” which was released on November 7, 2006. The album would go on to win Rock Album of the Year at the Dove Awards. The song, I don’t think was a single, but it was the theme song for the WWE Cyber Sunday 2006. And that should let you know what you are in for with this one.

The song was written by the whole band at the time, Kevin Young, Brad Noah, Joey Fife, Tim Barrett and Travis Wyrick. The song is about spiritual readiness, overcoming our past and getting ready to face life’s challenges it will throw at you. People or problems will attack you and you won’t be expecting it, so be ready to fight back. If someone goes against you, your country, your family, be ready for anything. Get yourself ready spiritually by letting God lead you in how to handle any situation. Don’t hold on to the pain, let God take control. Whenever I need a lift, this song will definitely do that. They lyrics speak of fighting, the bell rings, throwing down…all great tie-in’s to Wrestling so no wonder it was picked up as their theme song that year.

The song is aggressive, to say the least. It has loud guitars and drums and feels like a barrage of punches knocking some sense into you. Lead singer, Kevin Young, screams out the lyrics with an intensity that is matched with the aggressive nature of the song. There is anger, but not like you think. It is more like confidence as God is on his side. The best part is towards the end when Kevin speaks the first couple of lines of the verse, then he gets a little more intense until everything simply explodes, the music and his guttural screams. By the time it is all over, you are ready to take on the world…and then put the song on repeat. A stadium, rock anthem that is a great battle-cry.

My Sunday Song – “Fight Like This” by Decyfer Down

For My Sunday Song #477, we are talking about the song from the Christian Metal band Decyfer Down called “Fight Like This”. The album, ‘End of Grey’, was released on June 6, 2006 and the single, “Fight Like This”, and all three other singles went to #1 on the Christian Rock Charts and #43 on the Christian album chart. The band consisted of Caleb Oliver on vocals and bass, Brandon Mills and Christopher Clonts both on guitar and last but not least, drummer Josh Oliver. Strangely, it was the only album to feature Caleb on lead vocals.

The song is credited to all the band members and only consists of two short verses and a lot of choruses. So not much there to go on, but to me the song seems to be about fighting your inner demons or the forces around you that are trying to bring you down. The song appears to be about fighting against those forces and fighting with everything you have. The intensity suggests a fight against spiritual temptation or negative influences that have gone too far, demanding a strong response and according to the lyrics, those temptations or forces have crossed a line that should not be crossed. Let the fight begin.

The intensity of the music shows the fight is going to be hard, heavy and destructive. You can feel the anger, the drive, the fight that is inside of him to go against the demons he is facing. The guitars are roaring, the drums are pounding destructively hard. The bass is thumping the rhythm of the heart and all together the battle sounds like it is going to be epic. The chorus explodes and is really catchy. It is a rock anthem that would make a wonderful stadium anthem as well. Get the players riled up and ready to fight. Caleb’s vocals reflect everything being felt and you can feel he is ready to fight whatever comes at him. The fight is going to be brutal.

Give the song a listen and let me know what you thing. Is it a good work out song or stadium anthem, I think it will give you the drive to push hard and fast. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful and Happy Sunday! May this song get you through whatever you are going through at the moment.

“Fight Like This”

Your time is done, I’m moving in
I’ve come to fight or lose, so go ahead and try me
You know I’ve just begun, just begun

[Chorus:]
You’ve never seen a fight like this before (Like this before)
I take you down and leave you there wanting more (More)
You’ve crossed the line that I cannot ignore (Cannot ignore)
You’ve never seen a fight like this before (Yeah)

Feel the pain, I’m raining down on you
You won’t deny my will, cause what I start I will follow through
Craving all that I can see
Making something out of me

[Chorus:]
You’ve never seen a fight like this before
I’ll take you down and leaver here wanting more, more
You’ve crossed the line that I cannot ignore, cannot ignore
You’ve never seen a fight like this before

[Chorus]

My Sunday Song – “Lift You Up” by Gotthard

For My Sunday Song #427, we are going all the way to Switzerland and talk about the song “Lift You Up” by Gotthard. The song is off their album ‘Lipservice’ which came out on June 5, 2005. The album went to #1 in Switzerland and charted in a handful of other countries. I think they are the highest selling band to come out of Switzerland surpassing Krokus. I hope I’m not wrong in that fact. It was a single and they even did a video which you can see below. If you didn’t know, the band consists of the amazing singer, the late Steve Lee, guitarists Leo Leoni, bassist Marc Lynn, drummer Hena Habegger and guitarist Freddy Scherer.

The song was written by a slew of people including Anders Wikstroem, Fredrik Thomander, Heinz Habegger, Markus Probst, Mary Susan Applegate, Leo Leoni and Steve Lee. It took all these people to tell you that you are part of a greater plan and that there happiness is key to everything. The singer wants to put a smile on your face and no matter how bad it gets, there is something good around the corner. There is a plan for it all. It is uplifting, it is motivational and it is so damn fun.

When you hear this song, it will take you back to the rock anthems of the 80’s a la Bon Jovi or Def Leppard. The drum beat is uplifting in its military, marching style beat. The music is as uplifting as the lyrics and Leo’s guitar riffs and little solo breaks are killer. The rhythm section is spot on and the driving force behind the song. Steve Lee’s vocals are beyond description. The man could sing the phone book and I would listen. Such a shame on his early passing as we lost a vocal treasure with him. If you need a boost in your day…throw this song on.

My Sunday Song – “We Are The Young” by Paul Laine

We are to the final My Sunday Song of the 10 Song set on Paul Laine. We are also to the Final My Sunday Song as I am putting it on hold for a little while. I’ve done 420 of these on Sundays in a row, that is quite a lot. Time to do reviews that are backing up because of the Bon Jovi and Def Leppard Series taking up so much time.

For My Sunday Song #420, we get to the final Paul Laine song and we go back to his 1990 debut album ‘Stick It In Your Ear’. The song to end his series is “We Are the Young” which was not a single here in the U.S, but I think it was in Canada where it broke the Top 40 briefly. Why it wasn’t in the States, I have not idea, but it was one of many on this album that could’ve been a single here. The song was written by Paul Laine and produced by the late, great Bruce Fairbairn…that should be enough right there to make you pay attention.

The song is about being young where everything is new and fresh and the world is at your fingertips. You can be whatever you want to be if you go out and grab it as you are wild, young and free. Don’t let anyone hold you back and fight for whatever you want to be. In the story, someone is holding him back and feeling him with lies, but he sees the truth and is ready to break free. So, don’t let anyone hold you back, go out there and take the world on with both hands and make your life you own.

The song opens with dual guitars, one with a cool crunchy guitar riff and the other a little melody, both speed a long at 100 mph. It is a brilliant rock anthem and I could see this blasted at concerts with full audience participation. The guitar break on this is extensive and the solo is just an onslaught of frenzied fingers flying on the frets. The song has some progressive rock undertones as the style changes up a little, but the essence of the song is contained. And that scream Paul does in the middle of that break…holy crap! It is awesome. It is guitar heavy, rock perfection and Paul gives it his all and sounds like the rock god he dreamed to be on that outro a la Robert Plant. This is what it sounds like when you are young and hungry to succeed.

Bon Jovi – “You Give Love A Bad Name” – 7″ Single

In my quest to find good homes for 7″ Singles with picture sleeve covers, I came across another Bon Jovi single. This time around it is for the song “You Give Love a Bad Name” off their mega-selling album “Slipper When Wet”. It was the first single off the album and was the band’s first #1 single and wouldn’t be their last. The song was written by Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora and is about a woman who has done her lover wrong. So wrong that she gives love a bad name.

An interesting note about the song is Desmond had written this song for Bonnie Tyler, but it was called “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)” which had completely different lyrics. The song did poorly so he brought it to his writing session with Jon and Richie and pitched it. They completely re-wrote the lyrics and turned it in to the big hit it is today.

The single I have is the standard U.S Release which was released on July 23, 1986. The B-Side is also off ‘Slippery When Wet’ and is the song “Raise Your Hands”. The picture sleeve I have is in great shape and the vinyl is clean and sounds great. For being 36 years old, I would say it is in pretty great shape.
