Every year, I believe, Frontiers Records holds a festival with their artists getting up and playing a set. It was the Frontiers Rock Festival VI. It is a brilliant idea because they can take those sets and release albums or bonus material and it is all recorded at the same time so costs are cheaper. And fans are treated to a really great line-up and a great show each and every time. This particular Jeff Scott Soto was recorded at the 2019 show in Milan.
Fast forward to March 2020 and COVID hits. The world basically shuts down. No albums are getting a physical release, no touring is happening…nothing is happening. Frontiers does a brilliant move while waiting for the whole COVID thing to end, they decide to release a Jeff Scott Soto show digitally. And on April 27, 2020, we are greeted with the new album Loud & Live in Milan 2019. That date is signficant because it is the one year anniversary of the show which was April 27, 2019.
I was excited to have something because Amazon wasn’t going to be delivering much of anything as far as physical product, so I got this one. I will admit I was a little disappointed not having a physical product, but by November 6, 2020 that would change. Jeff finished his next solo album, ‘Wide Awake (In My Dreamland)’, and as a bonus disc, we were given this show on DVD, which of course I have. Now, let’s talk about this show since that is why we are here.

Jeff performed only a 10 song, 40 minute set, but what you get is worth every minute of your time. This a Jeff Scott Soto legacy set which is songs from through out his solo career with minor exceptions. The band is quite stellar as well as you get some SOTO regulars with BJ on bass, Edu Cominato on Drums and Leo Mancini on guitar.
They open with the song “Drowning” off ‘Lost in the Translation’ and this one is just as heavy live as it was recorded. A scorcher of an opener and you can feel the energy of the band as they are raring to go. There is an Ozzy feel to the guitar and Jeff sounds amazing hitting every note and sounding as great live as he does in the studio. They don’t waste any time and go in to “21st Century” off his album ‘Beautiful Mess’ and this one his another blazing track. Guitar heavy riffs backed up by funk grooves with a catchy chorus and some great backing vocals. Another fan favorite for me.
Then Jeff does an old school AOR with a great medley of some classic Soto songs starting with another ‘Lost in the Translation’ song “Believe in Me”. It was co-written with Neal Schon and it does sound like Journey. It is a pure AOR classic sounding track and one of my favorite Soto songs. Next is “Look Inside Your Heart’ off the ‘Damaged Control’ album and the this one was written with Joel Hoekstra. This song could’ve easily been on a W.E.T. album as it has that AOR sound as well. Then they end the medley with a full song called “Eyes of Love” off his debut Frontiers album ‘Prism’ (not his debut solo album though) and this one takes me back as I love the ‘Prism’ album. Another Journey-esque style song (or Bon Jovi, take your pick) and another great singalong song and a great showcase for Soto’s voice. Plus, Leo lays down a great solo.

After some band intros, we go into another favorite Soto song with “Soul Divine” off the album ‘Lost in the Translation’. You get an edgier guitar sound and a heavier one overall layered with those powerhouse vocals of Mr. Soto and some killer backing vocals by his band. The chorus is more contagious than Covid as you get hooked right away when you breath it in. This smooth and powerful song is melodic rock at its best and he nails it live. Then we get “Our Song” from ‘Beautiful Mess’ and hated this song on the album for its fake drum sound. Here though, I can see the magic of this song as all the instruments are real and Jeff sounds great as well. This definitely plays better live.
Then we get a real treat on this show. We get a song that Jeff only plays for his Frontiers friends and hardly ever, (if ever at all) in his normal sets because he says it means so much to them. It is the killer song “Holding On” and it opens with keyboards and then he joins in and sings so heartfelt and tenderly. As the full band kicks in the song picks up momentum and turns in to a sort of power ballad. It has some great harmonies, some nice guitar work and overall is a great showcase for his vocals. If there is one thing he does well and that is a power ballad. This is a highlight of the show in my opinion and why you want this show.
Then the band does one of the most well known Talisman songs and that is “I’ll Be Waiting” and this line-up does the song the justice it deserves. He likes to get the crowd involved with this song and he does just that. The final track of the show and another really cool highlight is when Jeff brings up Dino Jelusick (Animal Drive / Whitesnake) to join him on stage and they go in to the ‘Rock Star’ song “Stand Up” and they totally kill it…with big drums, loud screams and some killer guitars. Really cool way to end the show and end a really great set.
I have to say, this is a great set for Jeff and I should know as we have been through a ton of Soto live albums. If you are looking for a short set at around 40 minutes, something fun and quick, this is the one for you. It has some of his best tracks, no doubt plus a surprise song with “Holding On”. Then to have the duet with Dino on “Stand Up” these are two songs that give you some of the best performances of those tracks. A fun, high energy, exciting show and worth your time. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Star. If a short set could be perfect, this would be it.

JSS is a great vocalist. Probably the tallest Puerto Rican to ever live as well.

Whats cool is that you did not like Our Song the studio version but you gave it another chance and got into the live version. Thats cool when that kinda stuff happens…
