How does Jeff Scott Soto end up doing Queen songs at Queen conventions? Well, he had always loved Queen and Freddie Mercury was a big influence on his life, but that is common with a lot of people. For Jeff, it all started back in 1999 when one fateful day he met Jacky Smith who was the head of the Queen Fan Club. That chance meeting led to Jeff getting to meet Brian May and a chance to jam with him and the SAS Band at the annual Freddie Mercury Birthday Party.
That keep him in touch with the Queen family and in 2002, Jacky asked him to come to one of the Queen conventions. He made an appearance and actually jammed on a few songs during the convention. The feedback was so great, Jeff was brought back to do the North America convention as the first was in the UK. This led Jeff to be brought up on stage at an after party with Brian and Roger Taylor when they received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If that wasn’t enough, Jeff was asked to come back in 2003 and instead of a handful of songs, they wanted Jeff to perform an entire set of Queen songs. But not as a tribute act, as a real act and doing everything his way with his own band.

Jeff brought his solo band with him which was Gary Schutt, Howie Simon and Alex Papa. Now, Jeff was a massive Queen fan and knew all the songs, even the deep cuts. However, his band only knew the hits. This was the Queen Convention and “the Hits” aren’t enough. You need deep cuts. So, the band took a crash course in Queen and after several rehearsals, the band was ready to go. What we get here on a 2 CD set is the entire set they performed and it is massive. They played around 45 cuts (some in song melodies) and it was incredible. They released it on video and CD. I have the CD, but I need to get the video. Let’s get to it.
They opened with “The Procession” which is a great way to kick it off. The band then jumped into “Let Me Entertain You” which is perfect because Jeff did that song with Talisman so it is the one he has performed most already. And it set the tone for what was to come…a fantastic and amazing Queen fest of songs. With 45 songs, we aren’t touching on all of them as we would be here for weeks writing and reading, so no thank you. We will touch on some of my favorites starting with “Another One Bites The Dust”. Jeff loves his funk and this is right up his alley. He keeps asking the crowd if they ready to go and never gets a straight answer, so he lets it go. He confidently attacks the song. It is less funk then I expected and more rock, which is great. No use trying to copy Freddie as it can’t be done.

The first medley is actually really cool. So many great tracks such as “Death on Two Legs” and then in to a personal favorite of “Princes of the Universe” both tracks done to perfection the short time he spends on each one. Then we get “Tenement Funster” which is such a great Roger song and Jeff holds his own. It has “Innuendo” in it which is yet another favorite Queen track of mine and then in to “Ogre Battle”. Jeff leaves no stone unturned and covers the entire catalog. Such a fun and brilliant medley!!
After band intros, they harmonize the hell out of “Fat Bottom Girls” and it is a fun song made even more fun played live. They are having such a good time playing. Then we get to Disc 2 and they open with “I Want It All” and they give it their all. The guitar tone on this one is pretty spot on Queen sounding as Howie out does himself on this one and then afterwards Howie gets a solo which is really unexpected as they are playing Queen tracks.

Then we get another medley, but this one is more piano based so all the songs are a little slower and of course were more piano based tracks originally as well. Opens with “Dear Friends”, but the best tracks in this medley are “You Take My Breath Away”, “Love of My Life” (which gets full on fan participation and they sound amazing) and “Who Wants To Live Forever” which closes out the medley. But it is cool he tackles “Lily of the Valley” and “The Millionaire Waltz”. He digs deep.
They then keep the piano going and straight in to “Somebody to Love” and they do a bang up job. The final set of songs includes “Killer Queen”, “Under Pressure”, “Radio Ga Ga” and of course they end the set with “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions” because you have to do it or you get stoned afterwards. They came back and do an encore with “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “The Show Must Go On” and “God Save the Queen”.
The crowd goes nuts and It sounds like they really enjoyed themselves which is what this type of show is all about…the appreciation of Queen music and Jeff is a great frontman to handle these songs and give them the respect they deserve. If you want to see Jeff at his best and doing what he loves to do (and that is be on stage and play music whether it is his or not), then this is a great little piece for you. My Overall Score is a 4.5 out of 5.0 Stars as it is such a fun live show and if you are in the mood for something a little different, then give it a try.

I’m now convinced that Jeff can turn his hand to anything a I shouldn’t be surprised that he is able to do Queen so well.

He does a pretty good job, I mean he’s no Freddie Mercury, but no one is.

This was a fun find. I mean it ain’t Freddie, but it is still fun to hear his take on those classics.
