Bon Jovi – “Burning For Love” (1984) – 12″ Single (Japanese Edition) – (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

While I was in New York City a little while back for the Final Kiss Show at Madison Square Garden, my brother and I did hit some shops and I found, not one, but two Japanese Singles from Bon Jovi. These were released back in the 80’s in Japan only and they are in such beautiful shape. I had to have them so I bought them. First up is “Burning for Love”…

Bon Jovi was becoming huge in Japan after the release of their debut album. To celebrate that success they did a Japanese only single release for the song “Burning For Love” off their debut, ‘Bon Jovi’ album which came out January 23, 1984. And when I say big, it is a relative term as it was their debut and the album did chart at #38 on the Japanese Charts, but they weren’t putting out massive #1 songs yet. They were trying to capitalize further on charting and trying to make a name for themselves. For the 12″ single that was released, it also included a calendar for the first 3 months of 1985.

The 12″ Single included the OBI strip as you can see in the pictures above and it included a 3 song E.P. We might as well get to the music…

SIDE 1:

Side 1 kicks off with two live songs both recorded at the Super Rock Festival in Japan which ran from August 4th to the 12th, 1984 in Nagoya, Fukuoka, Osaka and Tokorozawa. The lineup included Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Michael Schenker Group and Anvil and that is a pretty solid line-up. The first song is “Breakout” which comes in after the great intro from the Japanese promoter. It opens with big guitars rather than David’s keyboards, but they still have all the “oohs, oohs” as expected. Jon sounds good, the mix is a little rough, but no denying this is live and that is what is great about it. The backing vocals are really good and almost too perfect. Richie’s playing was top notch with a great solo and cool riffs throughout. A solid opening song.

The next song we get is the classic Bon Jovi track “Runaway” which was the bands first big hit. The song kicks off with such a killer keyboard riff from David Bryan and then these explosive drum hits with a guitar scratch down the strings and then it was off to the races. The song feels huge and that chorus is nothing short of inspirational. So catchy, so infectious…simply put it is perfection. The band puts all their energy in to it and it comes across amazingly. An utterly classic Bon Jovi song. And even though Richie didn’t do the solo on the original, he does lay down a great one here as if he had done it originally (Tim Pierce did the solo on the studio track).

SIDE 2:

The third and final single from ‘Bon Jovi’ was “Burning for Love”. It sees Jon wanting some loving tonight. It has a lot of attitude and Jon seems a little desperate, but it all works so well. This upbeat rocker is a little more generic than the others, but still a heckuva lotta fun. Any physical product of this release was only in Japan and you couldn’t get it anywhere else. Unless you lived in the Netherlands then you could get a single fro Breakout with the two live versions on it.

And there you have it, the first of two Japanese Singles that I found for Bon Jovi. Next week, we will look through the next one. Thanks for letting us take the time machine back and interrupt the series for a few weeks.

    1. Not your fault. Site numbers are way down all across the board…likes, comments, ad money…everything is down. I also haven’t been around much commenting back timely or visiting anyone’s own pages. My drive to write is also down and not enjoying it anymore. If it keeps up, things might come to an end.

      1. Your drive has been amazing! And to think this is your hobby, that blows my mind. A huge fan of your site…

I know what it feels like to burn out, happened to me too…sadly I got no advice for u except to slow down or take a break.. I almost lost interest in music and had no drive to seek out new music..it took years to not make mental notes on everything music wise…now I just listen and enjoy..

It’s so much fun to read your thoughts on music since our taste in music overlaps so much. Most of your cds can be found in my collection…

All I can say that if this site goes I will feel the loss but in every case health comes first. Take care of yourself!

        1. I’m hoping my Youtube show will spark some excitement for me. But they site isn’t going anywhere. I think I just want to end the series that I do and then just do random stuff. The band series are exhausting. And thanks always for your support.

  1. Nice find. Time flies. They are so young (so young!). Nice fur Richie.

That would have been a cool festival to check out back in the day.

  2. Great writeup. I think these live tracks are on the digital 40th Anniversary release. Sambora you mentioned is in top form. Some good tunes on the debut now that I listened to it again.

  3. I really dig “Breakout.” I don’t care for the other tracks though. The wardrobe and big hair in those photos still boggle me. Richie was definitely the pretty one of the group!
