Bon Jovi – ‘All Time Best 1984-2024’ (2024) – Album Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

To celebrate the band’s 40th Anniversary, they have released a new Greatest Hits Compilation. And I know what you are thinking…big deal…right? Well, this one is a little different. One, it was only released in Japan…Two, the songs were hand picked by their Japanese fans. As a result, you do get the big hits, but there also some deep cuts you don’t normally see on a Bon Jovi greatest hits set.

And the band went all out with this release. It is called ‘All Time Best 1984-2024’ and was released in November 2024. I want to say it was the 6th, but with production delays, I’m not sure exactluy. My copy didn’t show up until around the 20th of the month. Whenever it was released, what a release it is. It chock full of hits and not hits, with 50 songs covering their entire career from the 1984 debut all the up to the 2024 release of ‘Forever’. All the songs are spread over 3 CDs and they even through in a Blu-Ray if you have the Super Deluxe Edition (which I do). Plus a few things more.

Being the Japanese release, it has to come with an OBI strip…right? Yes, you would be correct and this one had a strip that wrapped around the back and had the track listing in Japanese. I don’t know why that is cool, but it is and collectors love to have stuff from Japan with the OBI Strip. It makes it real I guess.

MUSIC CDS:

Let’s talk the music. As I said, they are spread over 3 CDs with 50 songs all handpicked by their fans. I would say it is a pretty freaking great compilation and if you want a career expansive set, you aren’t going to get any better than this right here. The only misstep I see is that one of my all time favorite Bon Jovi tracks is missing and that is “Something To Believe In”. Outside of that, it is stellar. Being a Japanese release, you are going to get “Tokyo Road” obviously, but it is the other songs you wouldn’t expect that are what makes this great.

First off you get three songs from the debut including “She Don’t Know Me” and “Burning For Love”, but you also get a couple from 7800 Fahrenheit which is so often overlooked by the band. You get “Only Lonely” and “Tokyo Road” I mentioned earlier. Then of course it is the normal songs you expect and there are quite a lot of those as this band has had a ton of hits. I was happy to see “Dry County” which is one of the best songs they’ve ever written, “Blood on Blood”, “Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars”, “Hey God” and “Wild is the Wind”. Including these songs shows me some thought was put in to this release.

BLU-RAY:

They also throw in a Blu-Ray in the Super Deluxe Edition. It contains around 16 music videos which is not their entire video catalog and honestly, that is a shame. You do get the new video for “Legendary” which I didn’t have, but everything else has been released before. I Blu-Ray with all their videos would’ve been totally awesome. The rest of the tracks say “Exclusive” so I am assuming haven’t been released before. It is a bunch of live videos of songs from several of the tours the band has done in Japan over the years from 1985 up to 2008. Sadly, only individual songs and not a whole show or shows (would’ve made this even better). There is also a video of the U.S.A. Rock Special out of Philadelphia from 1985.

TRADING CARDS:

If that isn’t enough, the Super Deluxe Edition comes with four trading cards that are selected from a batch of 15 so that means you don’t know which ones you are going to get. I got Jon, Richie & David as well as a Jon & Richie together. Now, do I buy 3 more sets and hope I get them all? No, won’t be happening. I ordered my set from CD Japan and they sent this sticker of the album cover as well.

PHOTO BOOK:

And that still isn’t all. They also throw in a great picture book with a ton of photos of the band and I am not sure they have all been seen before. It is bright and vivid and the quality of the pictures is outstanding. I nice add to the set.

LYRIC BOOK:

And there is one more piece that came with the set and that is a lyric book. The cool thing about it is that half the book is in English and the other half is Japanese. And yes, it is lyrics to all 50 songs in both languages.

And that is it. It isn’t the box set I was hoping for and hearing about for the last year, but it is a nice compilation that truly captures the essence of the band and covers their entire career which is why it needed 3 CDs. It isn’t perfect, but everyone’s song taste is different so it is as close to perfect as you are going to get. You can’t please everyone. I think there were some missed opportunities as I would’ve liked to have had all their music videos and a full live show, but beggars can’t be choosy. It is still a quality set and My Overall Score is a 4.5 out of 5.0 Stars as my missed opportunities aren’t a big miss for the set overall. Is this worth having? Yes, I think it is the best compilation the band has ever released!!

  1. A great idea to let the fans pick the songs. More bands should do that as it would be interesting to see what other songs than the singles would get picked. Agree that a live show from back in the day should have been included. Still a cool looking package and if the Snowman’s happy with it thats all that matters! haha

  2. I agree with Deke about how more bands should let their fans pick the tracks for their greatest hits albums because most of the time, the tracks that the record label picks are different from the tracks that the fans would pick. I’m glad they included “Hey God” and “Something for the Pain,” given those are my favorite tracks from ‘These Days.’ Also, the lyric book was a nice touch!
