My Sunday Song #19 is from Michael Franti & Spearhead called “Good To Be Alive Today”. The song is a very poignant song for what is going on in the world today. It would be nice to wake up one day and everything was perfect and every one could say it is a good day to be alive.
I think that way everyday. No matter how bad things get, I feel a day above ground is better than a day in the dirt. If we all do our little part to make the world better, maybe someday it will be. For my kids sake, I hope so. During this Holiday Season, it would be nice if everyone does a little something to make this world a better place. I know my family will, I hope yours does too!
This weeks My Sunday Song #18 is by my all time favorite band, Def Leppard. The song is off their latest self-titled album and is called “We Belong”. Def Leppard just released the new video in the last couple days while promoting their upcoming DVD which is called And There Will Be a Next Time – Live From Detroit. 1. “Rocket”
2. “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak”
3. “Switch 625″
4. Medley: “Hysteria” / “Heroes”
5. “Let’s Get Rocked”
6. “Pour Some Sugar on Me”
7. “Rock of Ages”
8. “Photograph”
I will be getting my copy for sure. Go get yours.
Now back to the song. This is the first song that every band member has a part in the lead vocals. That to me is the charm behind this great song and one of my favorite songs on the album.
I tried to look up the meaning behind the song, but really couldn’t find anything on it. In reading the lyrics it looks like it is about God. With lyrics like “You’re all that I am, You’re all that I see, The keys to the kingdom Are waiting for me” and “If you cast the first stone I will roll it away, I will kneel at your throne Hold my hands up and pray” are why I have the impression it is about his faith.
You can interpret it anyway you want, but this is my take away and why I wanted to showcase the song. To me, it screams I am not good enough to be loved by God and how can I be a part of His Kingdom.
I hope you get something out of it and enjoy. Let me know your thoughts on the song.
“We Belong”
Sometimes I feel I don’t belong here
Sometimes I just don’t feel
I feel so uninvited
A wound that never heals
I need a little shelter
Just for a little while
Sometimes I hide the sadness
Behind a painted smile
If you cast the first stone
I will roll it away
I will kneel at your throne
Hold my hands up and pray
I will hold back the tide
Push the oceans aside
Save the day
But I can be stronger
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I see
The keys to the kingdom
Are waiting for me
So don’t hold me back
Don’t hold me down
Just hold me and don’t let go
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I do
The end of the rainbow
Is waiting for you
So tell me I’m right
Cause this can’t move on
Not if we belong
Whatever happened to forgiveness
Are the words too hard to say
What happened to the answers
They disappeared along the way
I hide behind the madness
Still looking for the clues
And there’s nothing left to chance
When there’s nothing left to lose
And the voice in my head
Screams the words I believe
And the light in the dark
Is the air that I breathe
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I see
The keys to the kingdom
Are waiting for me
So don’t hold me back
Don’t hold me down
Just hold me and don’t let go
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I do
The end of the rainbow
Is waiting for you
So tell me I’m right
Cause this can’t move on
Back where we belong
As you cast the first stone
And I roll it away
And I kneel at your throne
These words that I say
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I see
The keys to the kingdom
Are waiting for me
So don’t hold me back
Don’t hold me down
Just hold me and don’t let go
You’re all that I am
You’re all that I do
The end of the rainbow
Is waiting for you
So tell me I’m right
Cause this can’t be wrong
Not if we belong
For My Sunday Song #17, I needed something powerful and heavy. I needed something to remind my that I am can accomplish anything. I know I wasn’t focusing on Christian artist for this set of 10 songs, but I kept coming back to the song “Feel Invincible” by the band Skillet. The song is off their latest release ‘Unleashed’. Plus, it is my blog and I can change the rules at anytime.
The song is great for motivating me to accomplish whatever I am working on at the time. It reminds me that because of Jesus dying for us, I can overcome any obsticle that I face with Him by my side. I hope you get that from this song as well.
In an article on iHeart.com written by Nicole Mastrogiannis, Skillet explains the meaning behind the song:
“‘Feel invincible’ is a song that’s about finding that one thing in your life that helps you wake up tomorrow morning, even though this whole world is going crazy. Every week or every few days, there’s another terrible tragedy or attack. There’s so many terrible things happening, and it’s easy to lose faith. It’s easy to just kind of give in to that fear. And ‘Feel Invincible’ is about finding that one thing. What is it that helps you believe in yourself? One thing that helps you believe and hope for the world. And it’s kind of an escape. That can be lots of things. That’s the beauty of music, is that it can mean one thing to someone, and you know it could be about a wife or a husband or a girlfriend or whatever. It could be about a friend, it could be about God, it could be spiritual. In my life, that one thing that gives me hope is my relationship with God. But, that’s the beautiful thing about writing poetry, is that it can mean lots of different things to different people.”
My Sunday Song #16 is completely different than any other song I have posted on this series. It is one of the strangest and at the same time one of the coolest and best songs I have heard lately. The song is “Bill Murray” by one of my favorite artists, Matt Nathanson. It is off his latest album ‘Show Me Your Fangs’ and worth buying if you don’t already have it.
The official video came out this week and is strange and glorious just like the song. I am going to let Matt explain the song from what he wrote for the posting of the song on Youtube.
Celebrity is such a huge part of our culture. So much so that whenever I’m interviewed I’m asked, without fail, “if you could hang out with one celebrity who would it be?” well, the list is short. it’s really a list of one: Bill Murray. In a Kardashian world, Bill Murray is the anti-Kardashian. he lives his public life in this amazingly unselfconscious, passionate way. makes creative decisions – from what i can tell – based purely on what he WANTS to do and he refuses to play the game of celebrity the way it’s played by everyone else and that is super inspiring. so i wrote this song about Bill and me hanging out for 100 days, Thelma and Louise-ing our way across the world. In the song, Bill rains down sage advice on me about the world and relationships and love, like I imagine he does with his actual, real-life friends.
My Sunday Song #15 is an uplifting song by the pop band Safetysuit. The song is “Numbers or Faith” and talks about how the world is going to hell in a hand basket and that we should all believe in something and why not that something be God.
What is surprising about the song is that these guys are a pop band and not a Christian band. Their brand new album, ‘Safetysuit’, actually mentions God and Jesus a couple more times and it was really a nice surprise from them. I couldn’t agree more with the message as the last few weeks have been crazy. Watching the news and reading Facebook makes me sick and it is nice to listen to something positive. I hope you get something out of the song like I have.
Today we are just going for pure fun as my family and I spend our last day in the Magic Kingdom. My Sunday Song #14 is “Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah)” by Andy Grammer. The song is about how he struggled and suddenly everything seems to be going great now. He has found his Hallelajuh. Have you found yours?
My Hallelajuh is my family and spending quality time with them with Mickey and Minnie. Until we talk again, enjoy this song and have a magical day!!
My Sunday Song #13 is by Alessia Cara called “Scars to Your Beautiful”. The song is off her latest album titled ‘Know It All’. This choice was inspired by my youngest daughter. She has to listen to this song every morning on the way to school. I don’t know if she understands the meaning or maybe she does and this is her anthem to get her emotionally ready for tackling school. Either way, it is a such an inspiring song for women and even men.
The song is about Body Image. If people don’t like they way you look, that is their problem not yours. The people’s perception of beauty needs to change because you are who you are and you are BEAUTIFUL!! Remember…God made you they way He wanted to make you and that in itself is beautiful.
“My Champion” by Alter Bridge is this week’s choice for My Sunday Song #12. The song is off their brand new album “The Last Hero” and if you haven’t listened to it…you should. There is a great review over at Stick It In Your Ear by DeKE if you want to read up on how awesome the album is.
It is a very uplifting and inspiring song. If you know someone who is struggling, let them know that they are your champion. They might need a little encouragement or just a word from you that could help them with whatever they are going through.
I hope the song and the lyrics help you out in some way.
I can’t believe I am on my 11th My Sunday Song post. Time to change it up a bit. I have a new picture for the next 10 weeks (thanks to my wonderful Mother-In-Law) and the song choices will vary slightly. These next 10 songs won’t be songs by Christian based artists. They are going to be by mainstream artists, but they will still be fun, up-lifting and have a positive message.
I am starting #11 with the song “Brand New” by Ben Rector. The song is off his latest album of the same name for which he is currently touring. Check out the album and the tour as you will not be disappointed.
The song “Brand New” is such a happy song and can put a smile on your face. Everyone loves the brand new feel of a new car, new clothes, newly washed bedsheets and the feel of a new girlfriend/boyfriend. This song makes you feel all those things and more all over again and again.
The video for the song is extra cool as it is a bunch of clips of fan-made videos for the song. He held a contest with Yahoo to hold an acoustic show in a fan’s living room. So many great videos were sent in that they compiled them together to make this super fun video.
My Sunday Song #10 is “God’s Not Dead (Like a Lion)” by the band Newsboys and from the movie called “Gods Not Dead”. My wife had mentioned that the movie “God’s Not Dead 2” was out now on DVD and we should watch it. That of course brought me back to this song which I felt I would share.
The inspiration for the movies was this song. The first movie “God’s Not Dead” was based around the premise of a college philosophy professor demands the students sign a petition declaring God is dead to pass his class. One student refuses and has to defend to the professor and the class why God is not dead. We watched with our family and it was a great family movie. The sequel “God’s Not Dead 2” is about a teacher who gets sued for mentioning God in class and how she goes defends herself. Looking forward to seeing it.
