Bon Jovi – ‘When We Were Beautiful’ (2009) – Documentary Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

Bon Jovi’s 11th Studio album is ‘The Circle’ and came out on November 10, 2009. My version of the album has a bonus DVD entitled ‘When We Were Beautiful’. The video is documentary movie that was recorded during the 2007 Tour for the band’s ‘The Lost Highway’ Tour. The film premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and was directed by Phil Griffin. This isn’t your typical behind the scenes video, there is more depth and expertise to it and a purpose behind it. A story that was meant to be told.

The video shows them on stage and off and some very intimate moments. This isn’t some wild, crazy party video, but an opportunity for the guys to be shown as people and far more than just Bon Jovi. Don’t get me wrong, there are some fun moments. For instance, it was hilarious, and a little bit scary, when a woman jumped on stage in Dublin just to kiss Jon. That girl was bound and determined to do it and she succeeded.

But the interviews here with the band members are the most enjoyable part. You get to see a very serious side of Jon Bon Jovi, the smoker, the businessman, the CEO of a major brand over the last 25 years. A man who struggles more with touring, the stress, the loneliness. There is an artistic side to the film as well. I love when they show Jon singing “Hallelujah” and intersperse an interview with him as the song is playing. Jon talks about his insecurities about performing and how he hates the lull in the show and always wants to have it going up, up and up. It is moments like this that keep this film interesting and a step above most documentaries you have seen.

Tico Torres, the man who doesn’t look to the past, and lives in the moment and loves to spend his down time playing golf, but family is his most important thing. Tico had a serious drinking problem and had so many issues with his dad leaving him at a young age. He has dealt with those demons and today might be the most together person of the whole band. He has found salvation in his art.

Richie Sambora, the man knowing he is the right hand man and Jon is the leader. His many complexities and the troubles he was going through with divorce and the loss of his dad. He had hit rock bottom after he broke his arm and got addicted to pain pills. He was able to pull himself out of that darkness and found his way back. To cap off the section on Richie, you get him sining “I’ll Be There For You” live on stage with the band. Really cool…wish we would’ve had the whole song. There was a funny moment for Richie where they are getting ready to play Central Park and yet his daughter decided to go see Jonas Brothers instead.

David Bryan, the man who is nothing but honest and will tell it to you straight. He isn’t necessarily thrilled that Bon Jovi isn’t a democracy, but he is loyal and understands the situation. He talks about his love of writing musicals and at one time had two plays in production. A very driven man in seeking out that success outside of the band.

You get to see the stress a free concert in Central Park causes Jon and the strain of a six week tour. He ain’t young anymore and those grey hairs are coming. You see how tired he is one minute and then turns on the charm in a split second when he has to meet some fans and some kids. You see the toll this life has taken on him. The regrets he feels for missing so many special moments with his kids. There is a sadness to him.

They go back in time and talk about the days of touring during Slippery and New Jersey and the amount of touring that nearly destroyed the band. The band left that final New Jersey tour show and went there separate ways not knowing if it was all over. Jon fired Doc, they brought in a shrink and Jon tried to take over the reigns. Which shows his drive on making it all succeed. By the way, that shrink saved the band. By 1992, the band members were board and the future was set.

The show started with Jon getting a massage before a show and the backdrop of the whole thing was building up to the free concert in Central Park and then it finally gets to the big show and goes off amazingly. Then it goes to the final show at Madison Square Garden and Jon is getting a massage. The bandmates are all seeing each other before the show and their families are there and are all smiles. The show ends with them in the studio and Jon singing a take of “When We Were Beautiful”. I fitting an end. There are a few deleted scenes that are added as bonus material and are enjoyable to watch as well.

The one thing that is perfectly clear about the video is that Bon Jovi is Jon Bon Jovi, Inc. and the band members are all employees. It is not a democracy, he is the leader, he has the vision and he drives the train and no on else has a say. The band members aren’t necessarily thrilled with that, but it was good enough and successful enough that kept everyone on the gravy train no matter what. I found it a very enjoyable film and it let us see a different side of the band. A business side that we hadn’t been very privy too. The well-oiled machine is still chugging along with Jon leading the way. My Overall Score is a 4.0 Out of 5.0 Stars. This is one worth seeing.

  1. Good documentary and I liked that everyone shared things from their perspective. But if all the touring was wearing him out, especially in the latter years, why didn’t Jon schedule shorter tours? It would’ve saved his voice in the long run.

  2. I think I watched a bit of this on the movie channel years ago. Jon running the ship is nothing new and its a business not a band and now a brand like every other act out there. Did you watch the new doc on them yet?

    1. Yeah, I watched the new one. It didn’t really give me any new data I didn’t already know so it was kind of boring until Richie came along and they talked about the split. That was the most interesting part of the whole thing. Well, that and Jon’s vocal issues. I hope he heals up nicely and can return to the live shows.

      1. I’m not even watching the new documentary. Why waste my time on a band I don’t like anymore? We watched the Beach Boys instead. And this weekend it’s Queen Rocks Montreal. Life is too short.
