Def Leppard – ‘Montreal: The Classic 1996 Broadcast (Bootleg CD) – Album Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

The band’s first show in this beautiful city since August 1992 for the Adrenalize Tour sees them at the Centre Molson in Montreal, Canada on September 15, 1996. A tour that ran from May 9th, 1996 through to April 27th, 1997 in support of their new album, at the time, ‘Slang’. No more ‘In the Round’, the band played on the traditional end stage set-up, but instead of 20,000 people, the place held anywhere from 5,000-9,000 people. No more massive shows, they were no doing a straight up rock show with less lights and less everything. A pure rock & roll show.

This show was broadcast on the radio in Montreal and southern Canada as well as across the U.S. And what we have here is a wonderful bootleg of that show across 2 CDs. A fun fact, a month later on October 23, 1996, the band would enter the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first band to play on three continents in a 24 hour period. That has nothing to do with this release, but figured why not throw that in for good measure. Back to the bootleg, this one sounds fantastic, there appear to be no errors in the track listing as far the titles are right, and the pictures are even of the era of the band. Finally, a bootleg with no mistakes.

Well, it was completely devoice of mistakes actually, the opening track “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” actually fades in part way through the song. I am guessing someone forgot to hit “record” on the tape deck. Otherwise, the only issue. The song sounds great, but man, they are playing it at warp speed. They then go into a track from ‘High & Dry’ that doesn’t get played enough, “Another Hit And Run”. The guitar work is sensational on this one and has a great solo. Then we get “Animal” and then the ballad “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” which for me is one of the better songs on ‘Adrenalize’.

But the reason I bought this disk is for 4 out of the next 5 songs. All from their new album ‘Slang’. It kicks off with Vivian’s penned track “Work It Out” which is one of my favorites from the album and then it goes in to “Deliver Me”. This does not sound like traditional Lep and that is fine by me. They mix things up and throw in “Hysteria” before they finish the first half of the show with “All I Want Is Everything” and “Slang”. These are all worth the price of admission as ‘Slang’ songs don’t really ever get played except maybe for “Slang”. And one thing you notice between songs is that occasionally, Joe will talk to the crowd in French. Tres Bien.

The second disk kicks off with “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” and “Switch 625” as they should always be played together. This is not an acoustic version like they did in the past, it is all electric. For the next song, Joe handed the mic over to Phil Collen who sang his Lep song “Miss You In a Heartbeat”. But before he turns if over, Joe has a little fun and plays Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” but as a joke it is about a drunk “Checkin’ in to Betty Ford”. Then Phil gets the mic. His voice is a little rough and gritty hear, but still so cool to see Joe share the mic. They then start playing “Two Steps Behind” which has become a crowd favorite as it should, it is a great song.

From this point on, it is a standard Def Leppard show with 4 songs from Hysteria, 2 from Pyromania and 1 more from Adrenalize. Nothing rare, nothing surprising and nothing worth talking about. I mean, come on, they know how to play these songs and they play them well. The crowd loves them and everyone is having a great time. Not much more to add really. At this point, we know what we are getting and we are okay with it.

Now, before I rate it, let’s talk about a couple interesting facts about this show…first…In 2019 The ‘Collection Volume 2’ box set included ‘Bringin’ On the Heartbreak’, ‘Switch 625’, ‘Miss You In A Heartbeat’, ‘Work It Out’ and ‘Deliver Me’ recorded at this show. ‘Miss You In A Heartbeat’ was added to the setlist and sung by Phil and this particular version was used as a free mp3 download on the official site in June 2001. Maybe the band will release it officially one day in full. I’d still buy it.

As far as bootlegs go, if you see this you do want to grab it. The sound quality is sensational, the band is tight and having a lot of fun. It is a great show and I am so glad to now have one from the Slang era. Disc 1 is the better disc only because it is full of rare tracks that don’t ever get played live anymore…and that is why I buy bootlegs is so I can get versions of songs that have never been released prior. My Overall Score is a 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars. Getting a slight ding for the shortening of “Rock! Rock!” and the back half of the album being too traditional with nothing cool in the setlist. And those two dings are just being picky as I have so many live shows from them. Worth picking up if you see it no matter what I say.

  1. Super find! If the show had been recorded a couple years earlier, the show would have taken place at the Montreal Forum. I wish I could have been there. The building is but an hour’s drive from where I lived at the time.

    Super set list too.

  2. I agree that Def Leppard need to play more tracks from ‘Slang’ live. Great stuff on that album! Vivian said in a recent instagram post that the band were rehearsing songs that they’ve never played live before and songs they haven’t played in a long time, so hopefully, they’ll bring back a couple songs from that album on their upcoming tour. It’s cool they played “Another Hit and Run” at this Montreal show because it’s always a blessing when they play stuff from ‘High ‘n’ Dry’ besides “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” and “Switch 625.”

  3. Always nice to find a bootleg with great sound, that can be a bit like finding a unicorn. It does seem like a relatively “safe” setlist especially like you said in the second half, but in a way I can understand why they do it, they know how their bread is buttered.
