Bon Jovi – ‘This House Is Not For Sale: Live From The London Palladium (2016)’ – Album Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

We are now on the band’s third live album. They had a great idea with this one. At a very exclusive listening party for their current album, ‘This House is Not For Sale’, the band played every song from the new album, basically, in the same order as the album. They played 15 tracks which is the number of tracks on the Deluxe Edition, however, there are 21 tracks available if you count Japanese and International releases as well as the Target and WalMart ones too. A lot of songs if you have to have them all, I don’t have them all…someday maybe.

The show was at the London Palladium and was recorded on October 10, 2016 and released on December 16, 2016. The full band was there including Jon Bon Jovi, Tico Torres, David Bryan, Phil X, Hugh McDonald and even John Shanks and Everett Bradley who are both official members now and even pictured on the album jacket for the new album, ‘Forever’. The band was in fine form, Jon’s vocals were perfection and the show went off without a hitch…I think.

Jon comes out and welcomes everyone and says his name is Bruce Forsyth. If you don’t know,   he is an English entertainer and television presenter whose career spanned more than 70 years. Forsyth came to national attention from the late 1950s through the ITV series Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Now his joke makes sense. Oh, and it is Sir Bruce Forsyth. When David (I think it was David), tells him it isn’t Sunday Night and he isn’t Bruce Forsyth, Jon says who he really is, the crowd screams and the band goes in to “This House is Not For Sale”. I am always wanting live versions of songs and the fact you get all of them live is really cool.

“Living For the Ghost” might sound even better here as a lot of the songs do. They band sounds so good, that it adds another level to the songs. More flavor. And that is really seen on “Knockout” which is full of energy and they really crank through it. “Labor of Love” has the same feel and vibe as the album, maybe even a little slower. “Born Again Tomorrow” rocks out and would be a great addition to the setlist. “Roller Coaster” is one of my favorites from the new album and it really shines here.

“New Year’s Day” is another uplifting song with a great rhythm and an energetic chorus. But verses are a little lacking and a little dull. Overall a decent enough track. “Devils’ in the Temple” was more church-like on the album, here more of a straight up rock song. Then we get “Scars on This Guitar” and it was boring on the album and might be even more so here if that is possible. Thankfully we are saved by “God Bless This Mess” which is a fun, uptempo track that gets things back on track. I think I like the studio version better though as Jon is tiring. The guitar picking on “Reunion” is great and I think this one is better live then on the album. It has a little more spark.

Now we are to all the extra tracks (except for the final song which ends the main album). First up is “Real Love” and it is a great piano based ballad. Jon makes you feel this one. “All Hail The King” sees Jon stop the song and tell a story of him at a fundraiser a few days earlier. A touching story, then back to the song. And after that little break, how could you not like this one. A great chorus and an enjoyable track. Next is one of my favorite songs they’ve done in a while and it is “We Don’t Run” which is off ‘Burning Bridges’ originally and deluxe track on ‘THINFS’. And I don’t like the live version at all. Backing vocals aren’t good at all here, no where near as clean and clear on the album. It is lacking al the killer attitude from the studio track. Ughh, I hate that as I love this song so much. Finally is the last song of the main studio album, “Come Up To Our House”. The studio version is boring as all get out, live…it is as cheesy and dull. What a horrible song to close a live show with. Hopefully they played some of their hits after this to get the bad taste out of your ears.

The live versions of the album isn’t any better than the studio album, but it is a great idea and I applaud them for that. It saves me from trying to get live versions of the songs as now I have them all in one place. A couple of songs on here are as good or better then the studio album, while the rest are just as bad as the studio version. I have the basic standard edition of the album, so to have some of the bonus tracks is awesome and I’m glad I have it for that. I gave the studio album only 3.0 Stars as it is a decent album, not one of their best though. This is equal to that plus a 1/2 point for the concept. I actually like it. So, My Overall Score is a 3.5 out of 5.0 Stars.

      1. I’ll try! I’m making an effort to get back into Reading all the fine posts of the Community. I’ve let the side down for a long time, which is shite for the Community guy. Anyway, I may not comment on every one but I’ll at least Like so you know I’m out here.

  1. I agree with you that its a cool idea to put out a live album of the recently released studio album. Someday maybe I will listen to them..someday haha

  2. Sadly, I can’t take “Come On Up to Our House” seriously because it makes me think of the Barney video with a similar title, ‘Come On Over to Barney’s House.’ It’s a curse being able to compare rock songs to kid’s TV shows lol. However, props to Bon Jovi for performing their most recent album (at the time) live in its entirety.

  3. Ah bonus tracks at Target and in Japan…this is one reason why collecting Bon Jovi can be so expensive. And one reason why I gave up collecting after Lost Highway! After buying 3 copies of that album and still needing bonus tracks, I was like…no more.

It sounds like I can safely skip this one.
