Jeff Scott Soto – ‘The Queen Sessions’ (2004) – Album Review (The Jeff Scott Soto Series)

Some things Jeff has done that is so extremely rare, it is near impossible to find a copy. This is one of those for me. I would count this one as an official release as Jeff released this independently and sold them exclusively during his 2004 Tour for ‘Lost in Translation’. That is my belief anyway. Discogs has this listed as a 2003 release date. I’m not sure the 2003 date is correct as there are songs on here from the Queen Convention that was held in 2003 and not released on CD or DVD until 2004. I would be surprised if they were included prior to their release. With that being said, Jeff did do at least two shows in Eloyes, France as Nicolas Muller organized those two shows and supplied the pictures to this album as I don’t have it.

There are 9 songs on here and as you can guess from the title, they are all Queen songs Jeff has done over the years. You get live songs and studio versions. What you don’t get are anything that is exclusive to this disc. All these songs have been released previously so the only thing cool about it is that it is like a tribute album of Jeff to Queen. It is nice having all the songs in one place. And as a collector, it would still be cool to have.

“Let Me Entertain You” is the opening track and off the Talisman album from 1998 called ‘Truth’. It was Jeff’s idea at the time to cover a Queen song. He thought this song would be great to kick off a live show so why not record their own version. Well, they ended up letting it kick off the album. And let me tell you, it kicks off the album with a massive bang. They stay true to the Queen vibe, but it is all Talisman with Marcel’s thumping bass leading the charge. Soto does his best Freddie Mercury and kills it. A fun song to start it all off.

“Tie Your Mother Down” is from the 2002 concert Live At The Sweden Rock Festival. It is a blast of a song and Jeff can hold his own while singing Freddie. What I love about the song is how much fun Jeff sounds like he is having. There is a great energy with him and the band. Jeff has so much confidence with a nice strut to his vocal delivery. Impressive.

We get three songs from the 2003 performance called Live At The Queen Convention: “Somebody to Love” is up first and it has such a great piano opening. The harmonies are great and they make it feel like Queen which is not an easy thing to do. Jeff’s swagger matches Freddie’s in those verses and the layers of vocals are up to Queen standards.

“Under Pressure” opens with that famous bass riff that is recognizable the instant you hear it. Jeff delivers the goods and he even tries to hit those Freddie high notes to almost full success. The crowd is into it as the band is really giving their all and keeping the Queen spirit alive.

“I Want It All” has a guitar tone is pretty spot on Queen sounding as Howie Simon outdoes himself on this one. And so does Jeff even bringing the crowd into help out. When Jeff hits that “Nooooow”, there is some great keyboard and then a riveting solo. Now, it isn’t Brian May, but Howie has fun with it ripping out some killer riffs. The song speeds up to almost a speed metal tempo. It is awesome.

“Save Me” is taken from the tribute album “Tie Your Mix Down – Tribute To Queen” (2001). Jeff sounds amazing as usual, but the backing track is either the original Queen backing track or from a Karaoke track with Jeff’s vocals added in. Not sure which is true.

“Dragon Attack” is from Jeff’s debut solo album from 1994 called ‘Love Parade’. It was a bonus track. This one falls flat. He can sing Freddie and does a respectable job, but it is just an uninspiring version as it is too funked out a version. If he would’ve sang it more true to the original, it would’ve been fantastic, but a funk song this is not.

“Let Me Entertain You” is here again, but this time it is a live version that was taken from the 2002 show ‘Live at the Gods’ which was released in 2003. This is a great song for Jeff to sing during live shows because like the title says, Jeff can definitely entertain you. This one had his band on fire and they really outdid themselves with this one. There is some killer bass work on this one that reminds you this is based on the Talisman version.

“Queen Medley” is listed as a special bonus, but is it really. There are no other variants of this CD, this was the only time it was for sale so not sure what is so special about this bonus. Other than it being totally killer. It was another track from Live At The Queen Convention 2003. So many great tracks in this medley such as “Death on Two Legs” (which he later covers with Ellefson Soto) and then in to a personal favorite of “Princes of the Universe” both tracks done to perfection the short time he spends on each one. Then we get “Tenement Funster” which is such a great Roger song and Jeff holds keeps on hitting it out of the park. It has “Innuendo” in it which is yet another favorite Queen track of mine and then in to “Ogre Battle” and “I’m In Love With My Car” where Jeff gets all serious and aggressive with the vocals. It is all so cool. Jeff leaves no stone unturned and covers the entire catalog. Such a fun and brilliant medley!!

This is a great little piece and one day I will have a copy in the collection. As I said earlier, it is not a necessary piece as the songs are all previously released. Simply cool to have all these Queen tracks in one spot. Although you do get a ton of Queen songs on the Live at the Queen Convention release. That is probably a better one for you to grab if you are a Jeff and Queen fan. At the time of writing this there was one on eBay for sale for around $180. Sorry, I think I’ll pass on it for now since that is a lot to pay for songs I already own.
