Friday New Releases – October 23, 2020

Another Friday of new releases and this one is jammed pack full of over 20 new albums. And these are the only the ones I chose to list. I would venture to say there should be at least one thing of interest to you in this list, if not, well…sorry. I have only 2 albums I want and one I actually already have. My choices are in Blue.   • 910I1CR8rML._SX522_  Beastie Boys – Beastie Boys Music – (Capitol Records): I am a casual Beastie Boys fan so a greatest hits album is really perfect for me. I do have License to Ill because everyone should have that one. I don’t have this on order but maybe I will put in on my Christmas List!!
  • 71V3Of3HfyL._SS500_  Smith & Myers – Volume 2 – (Atlantic Recording): The Shinedown boys of Brent Smith and Zach Myers are back with Volume 2 after only 2 weeks since Volume 1. And let me tell you, Volume 1 was great so this should be more of the same. It is usually all acoustic (with an electric thrown in every now and then) and some great covers. I think they are going to put this on vinyl so yes, another Christmas List item!!!

Tuesday’s Memes – 80’s Music

Welcome to Tuesday’s Memes.  We are going to tackle the decade that is the 80’s because music was fun and not depressing like the 90’s (I will do the 90’s next…maybe).  For those that grew up in the 80’s, I hope this brings back some memories.  If you didn’t grow up in the 80’s, well…I am sorry for you!!

Turntables & Vinyl #15 – More & More Vinyl

Vinyl, Vinyl, Vinyl…I keep getting more and more and I get more addicted to wanting more and more.  My wife shakes her head and just sighs at this point.  I guess I could be drinking, smoking or doing drugs, but thankfully that is not the case.  If I did those things, I would consume everything and I would just be throwing money away.  With the vinyl purchases, I at least could sell them if I ran out of money, so it is an investment…yeah, let’s go with that!!

There is a friend at work that her husband has 2 big crates of vinyl in their closet and she wants them out of the house.  So before they took them somewhere to sell them, she gave me first crack at going through them and letting me pick out the ones I want first. I gave her a fair price (more than any record store would give her, even more than they would in store credit).

The crates were very heavy and full of vinyl.  My wife said I should take them upstairs in the Loft and sit with the family while I went through them.  I declined as they were too dang heavy and I didn’t want to tackle the stairs with them.  Instead, I stayed downstairs for a couple hours and slowly went through the collection.

The collection consisted of albums from the late 50’s all the way up to the late 80’s.  Each crate was sort of themed.  The one crate was from the 50’s-70’s and it was all her husband’s parents vinyl.  It had stuff I had never heard of and a lot I had.  There was Elvis, Liberace (I passed on those), Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, the Kingston Trio and I could go on and on.

My Sunday Song – “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man

My Sunday Song #66 is the first current release I have done in some time.  It is the song “Feel the Still” by the band Portugal. The Man.  The song is the second single off the band’s 2017 album “Woodstock” and their first #1 on any chart.  What surprised me about the band when I looked them up was that this is their 8th studio album.  8th??  I had never heard of these guys…how did that happen??

I first heard this song on an Apple commercial and then later I started hearing it on the radio.  It was so damn catchy and had a 60’s kind of vibe to it with the fun beat and John Gourley’s very high pitched vocals.  As it turns out, the song has borrowed heavily from the song “Please, Mr. Postman” by The Marvelettes which was released way back before my time in 1961 (not really that far before my time but definitely before).

Lyrically the song seems all over the place.  It jumps from references to the civil rights movement in 1966 up to their introduction to the Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill in 1986 and all the way to today and what is happening with the current administration.  I saw where the song was inspired by his daughter growing up while they were making this album.  To me he seems to be worried about the world she is going to inherit and that we need to fight for our rights like people have done in the past.  Now is the time.  Maybe I am reading too much into this short song at only 2:43.
