In 1998, Def Leppard went back in the studio to record their seventh studio album, ‘Euphoria’. The band’s plan for the album was pretty much, don’t abandon the original Leppard sound. Go back and record an album that sounded like the albums that made the band famous. And the album turned out exactly like that. After creating an album like ‘Slang’, that was a brand new sound for the band and wasn’t that successful. This was probably a smart idea. It was produced by Pete Woodruffe and Def Leppard at Joe’s Garage Studio’s 1 & 2 in Dublin, Ireland and would be released on June 8, 1999. The album would actually be moderately successful, hitting #11 on the Billboard charts and it would go Gold in the States.
Longtime friend and producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, came and helped out with the album, but only spent four days in the studio giving them advice rather than sitting at the boards working. Heck, he even helped write a few songs and sang backing vocals on a track. I’m sure his direction in those short four days helped the direction of the album. Speaking of direction, the band’s look went in a different direction too. The hair was cut short, the clothes were nicer and they looked like a more modern rock band going in to the year 2000. But musically, it was back to their heyday of the 80’s and early 90’s. And not a moment too soon.
The band was still Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Rick Allen, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell and is still that band today as I write this in 2024. What I like about this album is that Vivian keeps getting more involved and has a lot more writing credits on this one. His influence on the band is evident. The band have aged well, matured and delivered us a solid Leppard album.
Coming out of the cage with a roar is the opening track “Demolition Man”. A high energy, fist pounding rocker. The song sees the typical gang type vocals on the chorus, the fast, frenzied guitars and Joe spitting out lyrics at breakneck speed. A banger of an opener that let it be clear, Leppard was back with what you want to hear, yet sounding both old school and modern at the same time. A nice mixture of the two.
A few weeks back, we went through my Billy Idol Vinyl. I promised we would come back and do a walk through Billy’s first big band, Generation X. Here we are ready to tackle the Generation X collection. We go through all the vinyl I have and even throw in a few CDs and a cassette. If you like some Punk, then you’ll love Generation X. We start with a young lad name William Broad that turns in to the great Billy Idol and how he developed in to the superstar he would later become. I hope you enjoy!!

Sometimes, when you buy a bootleg CD you have no idea what you are buying. This is one of those cases. I couldn’t find anything about the release other than the front cover. All it said was “Def Leppard – Live Bites” and it listed out a handful of classic Leppard songs. And it was cheap. Those two things were all I had to go on, so I bought it.
When I received the CD in the mail, It didn’t offer much else to it either. It did have a full track listing, but it was only 11 songs and from the looks of it, not a full live show…only pieces. There were two songs from ‘Slang’ and nothing later that told me it was from around 1997 at the very least. There was nothing in the booklet…ha! booklet…one sheet of paper…so not really a booklet…that gave me any indication of where these songs were recorded. The back of the CD had something that said the following…
Having sold over 65 million albums worldwide since their debut release in 1980 and proved themselves as one of rock music’s hardest working and consistently powerful live bands, Def Leppard remain one of only five rock groups who can claim two separate original 10 million-plus selling albums.
For the band’s first greatest hits compilation called ‘Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits 1980-1995’ there was actually two new songs, but only one official single. The single was for the song “When Love & Hate Collide” and was released on on October 2, 1995 where is one of their highest charting songs in the UK for the band going to #2. In the US it didn’t crack the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, but did make the Adult Top 40 going to #39…just barely making it. It was the only new song on the album…well the Japanese version of the album at least. That song was “Can’t Keep Away From the Flame” which we will get to shortly.
The CD I have here is actually the Promo CD that was released by Mercury. It was released in a grey generic record company cardboard sleeve and actually contained both new songs from the album with “When Love & Hate Collide” and “Can’t Keep Away From the Flame”. From what I can gather is this was a US promo and not available anywhere else. Pretty cool.
“When Love & Hate Collide” was written by Joe Elliott and Rick Savage and was demoed back during ‘Adrenalize’, but lost out to “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”. The song had a slightly heavier production for that album rather then the stripped down version here. It was written while Steve Clark was in rehab and the guitar solo on the song is the last recorded guitar solo by Steve who died in 1991.
I can’t believe it is time for another monthly wrap-up of what we added to The Collection. This time around, it is April 2024 and we added a ton of stuff. Somethings we added were actually in their own episode like the Record Store Day purchases and some Kiss Bootlegs. The rest of what we added are on here.
We hit up the local record stores here in Charlotte and even down in Wilmington, North Carolina when we were on our Spring Break trip. We picked up stuff from Discogs, eBay and even from Amazon as well. It is a lot of stuff and so much in fact, there are things still unopened and haven’t been listened to yet. I think that is a sign I bought too much. But like traffic signs, I’m ignoring it too!!

The album, ‘Nine Lives’ saw the light of day on March 18, 1997. Aerosmith released 5 singles off the album, it went all the way to #1, they won a Grammy and the album sold over 2 million copies. It is not quite as good as their last album did, but I would say it is still pretty damn good. The third single off the ‘Nine Lives’ album was for the song “Pink” and was released on November 18, 1997. The song was written by Steven Tyler, Glen Ballard and Richard Supa. It went all the to #1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts and it made the Top 40 hitting #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single went Gold selling over 500,000 copies. A time when rock wasn’t at the top of it’s game, Aerosmith was still going strong.
The song itself is a very suggestive and dirty. The word “Pink” is referencing a certain part of the girls anatomy. Every line in the song starts with the word “Pink” as well and if you listen you quickly understand what they are talking about. The music video for this song was just as suggestive and pushed things to where they were eventually censored if they wanted the video shown. This song definitely hits the “Sex” part of “Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll”.
There are two versions of “Pink” on this single. The first is a non-album version called “The South Beach Mix” which was produced and mixed by Glen Ballard along with help on the mix by Christopher Fogel. This mix still opens with Tyler on harmonica, but it feels less bluesy then the original. They’ve taken it a brightened it up giving it a more pop feel to it. It isn’t a bad version, but I prefer the original album version.
