My Sunday Song – “Bang Bang” By Nessa Barrett

For My Sunday Song #361, we are doing a different sort of 10 song set. Instead of 10 songs in a row from a band, I asked my daughter to pick 10 songs that she likes and I will listen to them and write about them giving my thoughts on them. It is a varied bunch of artists, some I wasn’t surprised she picked, some I was and some I wish she hadn’t, but I’ll do it anyway. First one up is actually one of my favorites that she picked. It is the song “Bang Bang” by singer Nessa Barrett. It was released as a single back in December 2022, but it isn’t on her latest album. It is a brand new song. Nessa is one of the few artists to come off of TikTok and actually land a record deal and there is a reason for it as she has a great voice and does some pretty interesting songs. There is another one she does called “I Hope UR Miserable Until UR Dead” that I think is totally awesome, but this one is great too.

The song is really dark. Nessa has a mental disorder called borderline personality rage and she really lets you know what goes on when that happens. The line “I’ve Got Intrusive Thoughts” is exactly what happens as when you are in that rage, the crazy things you want to do at that exact moment can be overwhelming. In the song, she wants to do some really bad things to her ex & his girlfriend like kill him first, cut the lines on his breaks and beat him with a crowbar, heck maybe even throw him off the roof of a building. All a little disturbing and all make a great song.

Musically, there is a lot of aggressiveness to it and a whole punk attitude. Heck the song is only a little over 2 minutes and it goes by in a frenzied flash. The electronic drum beats, the wicked basslines are heavy, quick, a little distorted and totally rocking. Nessa delivers the lyrics in a fast, deliberate fashion that seems eerie and yet and there is a little fun to her vocals as well. When she gets to the “I’ve Got Intrusive Thoughts” part, she speaks it which doubles down the evilness of the song and I will be honest, that is what is great about the song. That chorus is catchy as hell with the “la, la, la’s” and the “bang bang”, simple yet very effective.

Friday New Releases – September 30, 2022

Wow! Another month in the books. 3 more to go before we finish out the year. Time flies by!! We end the month with a nice haul of well over 50 releases. I only want to hear a handful of these and they will be marked in Blue. Let me know what you want to hear this week and what we may have missed. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all have a great weekend!

  • 81Tmds+wk7L._AC_UY436_FMwebp_QL65_  Richard Marx – Songwriter – (Shelter Music Group / BMG Rights Mgt): Can you believe Richard Marx is on his 13th Studio album. Crazy! But thankfully for us he is as I will always take new music from. I’ve been a fan of this pop artist since his mullet days! This album consists of songs in 4 different genres – pop, rock, country and ballads. Interesting.
  • 81keH9fZ0YL._AC_UY436_FMwebp_QL65_  Monster Truck – Warriors – (BMG Rights Mgmt): This Canadian hard rock, blues rock, southern rock band is back with another album. Have they run their course. I hope not, can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this time around.

Friday New Releases – September 17, 2021

Happy Friday!! You made it through another week so congratulations are in order! And as an award you have an abundance of new releases to pick through and hopefully something will catch you eye. We have the 2nd week in a row with over 50 albums to choose form. I also want to give a shout out to my beautiful wife and wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Today she is ??? I ain’t going to tell you her age, that would be rude!! Now back to the show, I am really excited about one and somewhat about others and I have highlighted all my choices in Blue. Let me know what you want to hear and what albums I may have missed as it does happen. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

  • 715uK7Xdr5L._SX522_  Billy Idol – The Roadside E.P. – (BFI Records / Dark Horse Records / BMG): I am so excited about this release as I have been a fan for a long time and I did a whole series of over 20 posts on his career. It was a blast. His new song “Bitter Taste” is actually amazing and I can’t wait to hear the rest. The only disappointing thing is it is an E.P. and only 4 songs, but I will take what I can get at this point. My autographed copy should be here soon.
  • 81cHmnu+D6S._SX522_  Daughtry – Dearly Beloved – (Dogtree Records): It has been 3 years since his last release but feels like longer. I like his style of rock as it is pretty damn catchy and he has some great choruses and I like that. I did get oversaturated with him, but I am ready for some more as I feel it has been longer than it has actually been. Here’s to hoping for a good album!!

My Sunday Song – “Renegades of Funk” by Rage Against the Machine

For My Sunday Song #57, I am going with “Renegades of Funk” by Rage Against the Machine.  The song was released on election day in 2000 and with George W. Bush winning I am sure RATM had a lot more to “Rage” about.  The song is off their ‘Renegades’ album and was produced by the great Rick Rubin.

What I never knew, or had just forgotten, was the song was actually a Cover of a song performed by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force and released back in 1983.  These two songs really sound nothing alike and Rage has turned into a funked up metal song that fits my taste nicely.  Not only is it a cover, Rage has included a percussion piece of the song “Apache” by the Incredible Bongo Band.

I had never really listened to Rage Against the Machine as the late 90’s were not a great time for me so had overlooked them.  It was playing Guitar Hero or some video game where the song was featured and I was like…WOW!!…how have I missed this song.  Ever since then I have been a fan of the band. Tom Morello just absolutely slays it on the guitar and he is one of the best out there. The sounds and riffs he does are so his own style there is no mistaking when he is on lead guitar.
