The Original vs. The Cover – “The Chain”

For this edition of The Original vs. The Cover, we are going to explore the Fleetwood Mac song “The Chain” which was covered by the band The Highwomen for the soundtrack to the movie ‘The Kitchen’ back in 2019. I could’ve picked other covers by maybe Tantric or Evanescence, but I really liked this version. The song was written by all of Fleetwood Mac and this is certainly true as the song is pieced together from parts of several different unused material from all members of the band.

The opening intro was from an old Lindsey Buckingham song called “Lola (My Love”, the lyrics are from Stevie Nicks and other elements were worked in from Christine McVie’s song “Keep Me There”. The final section of the, including the bass progression were written by Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. It is a Frankenstein’s Monster of sorts and quite wonderful.

Let’s take a look at each version and see which one is the best.

FLEETWOOD MAC

The Fleetwood Mac version is so well known, it would be hard to top it. The opening guitar picking by Buckingham is damn near perfect. Lindsey and Stevie’s vocals together are always so perfect together as their tones play off each other so nicely. Mick’s drumming is so precise and played for the song. Not one drum hit is out of place. When you get to that bass progression towards the end, the song is really hitting on all cylinders as the tempo picks up and the energy as well. The vocal harmonies are what sets this song apart. It is one of those songs where each instrument is so critically placed and if pulled out the song would suffer. I’m telling you, it don’t get much better than this.

Friday New Releases – September 17, 2021

Happy Friday!! You made it through another week so congratulations are in order! And as an award you have an abundance of new releases to pick through and hopefully something will catch you eye. We have the 2nd week in a row with over 50 albums to choose form. I also want to give a shout out to my beautiful wife and wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Today she is ??? I ain’t going to tell you her age, that would be rude!! Now back to the show, I am really excited about one and somewhat about others and I have highlighted all my choices in Blue. Let me know what you want to hear and what albums I may have missed as it does happen. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

  • 715uK7Xdr5L._SX522_  Billy Idol – The Roadside E.P. – (BFI Records / Dark Horse Records / BMG): I am so excited about this release as I have been a fan for a long time and I did a whole series of over 20 posts on his career. It was a blast. His new song “Bitter Taste” is actually amazing and I can’t wait to hear the rest. The only disappointing thing is it is an E.P. and only 4 songs, but I will take what I can get at this point. My autographed copy should be here soon.
  • 81cHmnu+D6S._SX522_  Daughtry – Dearly Beloved – (Dogtree Records): It has been 3 years since his last release but feels like longer. I like his style of rock as it is pretty damn catchy and he has some great choruses and I like that. I did get oversaturated with him, but I am ready for some more as I feel it has been longer than it has actually been. Here’s to hoping for a good album!!

Friday New Releases – October 5th

Welcome to October.  Halloween decorations will start going up and Fall should be arriving soon…well I am in the South so I guess we don’t get Fall weather until Christmas.  The new releases are still coming fast & furious (great title for a movie franchise…I wonder if it has been done).  There are two releases from 2 of my favorite singer songwriters and there are just so many to choose you should be able to find something.  My choices are in Blue.  Let me know what interests your or I am missing anything so people will know.

  • 91OE1mUg7jL._SX522_  Matt Nathanson – Sings His Sad Heart – (Acrobat Records):  Matt Nathanson, what can I say.  He is one of my favorite Singer-Songwriters out there today.  I have seen him live 3 times (all is an opener…I need to see him as a headliner).  This album will be there when I get home on vinyl along with his Def Leppard Cover E.P. on vinyl as well.  This will consume most of my listening this weekend.  His lyrics are insightful at times, quirky, funny and sometimes damn near brilliant.  I can’t say enough good things.  Damn…I hope I haven’t built him up too much to disappoint…nah..can’t happen.

  • 81Hjd0GYwOL._AC_UL115_  Steve Perry – Traces – (Fantasy): The legendary Journey singer is back with his first album in over 20 years and I could not be more excited.  I can’t say I am a huge fan of what I have heard so far, but that doesn’t matter.  Any new music by this man is welcomed and will be listened to for time to come.

Tuesday’s Memes – Fleetwood Mac

It is about time I did one on Fleetwood Mac.  With the news of Lindsey leaving…again…they need some special treatment.  There was a time when I didn’t think Fleetwood Mac wasn’t cool because I was in to Hard Rock and Metal…well let me tell you…Fleetwood Mac is cool and always was.  Let’s celebrate the band with some memes.  I hope you enjoy…

Friday New Releases – June 9th

It is Friday yet again and there are even more albums out and ready for you to go buy, stream or do with it as you will.  Not a lot this week, but one critical one for my kids.  The ones I will check out are highlighted in Blue.  I hope there is something for you.

  • 170x170bb-70  Katy Perry – Witness – (Capitol Records):  After 4 long years since Prism, Katy is back and better than ever…well…maybe not.  She has released 3 singles are ready and I have to say I am not that impressed.  I only like the first one “Chain to the Rhythm”, the rest have been kind of awful (especially “Bon Appetit”).  And I have to mention how awful the album cover looks to me.  Not off to a good start.  I will still give it a try though, but expectations are now pretty low.

  • 51qQOMb6CqL._AC_US160_  Lady Antebellum – Heart Break – (Capitol Nashville):  Lady Antebellum is back after three years and the members doing a little stuff on their own.  They are pure pop country, but I love Charles Kelley’s voice and Hillary Scott’s as well.  Put the two together and wow!!
