Def Leppard – “Armageddon It” (1988) – 7″ Single (Part 5 of 7) – (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

On August 3rd, 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, ‘Hysteria’.  Little did they know this ground breaking album would go on to sell over 25 million records, produce 7 hit singles and go to #1 on the Billboard Charts.  We are to the sixth track on the album and the sixth single. Yes, every song on Side 1 was a single. That is a pretty solid first side. “Armageddon It” was released in March of 1988 in the UK and in November 1988 in the U.S. where it went all the way to #3 in the U.S. That is 3 Top 5 songs on one album another that was Top 10.

The song was a play on words as the song ask “Are You getting It?” and the reply is “I’m a getting it” but said as “Armageddon It”. A song that was started in the early 1984 sessions for this album and completely re-written when Mutt got his hands on it. There isn’t much depth to the song lyrically, it seems to be basically about getting some sex. It could be about getting whatever you want out of life and going for it, but mostly feels like a sex thing. And I’m okay with that.

A SIDE:

The song has a T. Rex vibe to it with a cool, catchy riff that you can almost sing it. The song is a modern version of the whole glam scene from the 70’s. I always thought the song was a little cheesy and it is, but something works. Steve gets the solo and it is pretty tame, yet fits the song perfectly as he doesn’t play a solo to show off, it fits the songs. Very well done Steve. The riffs are tasty and hooky as well as the chorus. There is a lushness to the whole song. A fun, energetic track that almost has a dance vibe to it as well. They threw in everything but the kitchen sink.

B SIDE:

The B-Side is a fun little track by Stumpus Maximus and the Good ‘Ol Boys. The Good ‘Ol Boys are naturally Def Leppard, but Stumpus Maximus is not Joe Elliott. Nope, singing on this track is Malvin Mortimer who was a guitar tech/roadie for the band. He later became their tour manager. The guys were just messin’ around with this one as it is bad…really bad…but kind of fun too. Malvin is not the best singer, but he is really hamming it up and the guys are just having a piss with it. The song is cover or is it a parody of the song “Release Me” by Eddie Miller written by Eddie, Dub Williams and Robert Yount. I really can’t describe this properly so you have to hear it for yourself.

Now, I actually had all the 7″ Singles at one time, but I was always missing the final two puzzle pieces. So, when the band released the Hysteria Singles Box Set, I was finally album to finish the puzzle of the Hysteria Cover art. We will create this picture as we go trough the singles. First up…”Animal”…then “Woman”…”Pour Some Sugar On Me”…“Hysteria”…and now “Armegeddon It”

  1. I agree with you about “Armageddon It” not being Steve’s best solo, but the “come on Steve, get it!” part gives me chills every time. I wish they still did that as a tribute to him, but I get why they changed it to “come on boys” after he died.

  4. This song didn’t do as much for me as others on the album. I don’t mean anything against it, I do think it’s good and wonderfully executed, as everything else on the record. But this one just didn’t “hit” in the same way.

    The B side is one of those cool and amusing things that are fine but certainly not a selling point. That one isn’t bad at all, I had a good time checking it out.
