Brendan O’Brien – Producer Extraordinaire #2

After I wrote on one of my favorite music producers “Mutt” Lange, I started thinking of other producers I tend to gravitate towards and the first one that popped into my head was Brendan O’Brien.

The 1990’s

Brendan was very busy in the ’90’s during the Grunge & Alternative movement and worked with so many of the top bands of that era.  He worked with Stone Temple Pilots throughout the ’90’s on their albums ‘Core ‘(1992), ‘Purple’ (1994), ‘Tiny Music’ (1996) and even ‘No.4’ (1999).  The relationship continued into the 2000’s with his work on their fifth album ‘Shangri-La Dee Da’ (2001).

KISS – Alive! – Released 41 Years Ago Today

I was online and noticed that Kiss released their first live album back on this date in 1975. I figured I would do a little post that celebrated that fact.

This was the album that made me a huge Kiss fan even to this day.  The album finally brought to life the songs from their first 3 albums and made you feel you were part of the show.  I know there is a lot of controversy that this isn’t really a live album as they went into the studio and cleaned it up significantly, but I don’t care.  It had the feel of a live album and is still one of my favorite live albums even today.

I actually still have the vinyl release from 1975 (which is actually my brother’s album, but I have it and he doesn’t).

Friday New Releases – September 9th

September has an incredible number of new releases coming out and today is the start of it all.  There is now way humanly possible to get through all of them and I am not going to try.  I will miss out on a lot of great stuff, but each week there is going to be too much to get through.  I would have to quit my paying job and then do this full time (which doesn’t pay)…not going to happen, but wish it could.

The ones in Blue are the ones I will make every effort to listen to and enjoy!  Which ones are you looking forward to hearing?

  • 61E1lss9nGL._AC_US160_  Rev Theory – Revelation – (Another Record Co):  I like it loud and heavy and that is what I expect I will get with Rev Theory’s new release.  I have thoroughly enjoyed their prior releases and what I hear so far sounds great.  Give them a listen.

Robert John “Mutt” Lange – Producer Extraordinaire

Robert John “Mutt” Lange could quite possibly be one of the greatest music producers there has ever been.  He is personally responsible for some of the biggest selling albums of all time. He is the man behind the music, literally.

He started producing albums in the 70’s where he produced Graham Parker’s album ‘Heat Treatment’ and worked with the City Boys.  He also worked with the Boomtown Rats which gave him his first real breakout album was their 1978 album ‘A Tonic for the Troops”.

But the big break came with the success of his work with AC/DC.  He produced the 1979 album ‘Highway to Hell’ and then the 1980 classic ‘Back in Black’ which is the second largest selling album of all time at over 50 million albums.  ‘Back in Black’ was one of the albums I picked up just recently (read about it here).  He went to do another album for AC/DC in 1981, ‘For Those About To Rock We Salute You’.

Friday New Releases – Sept 2nd

It is Friday and a holiday weekend, what could be better??  Oh, new music!!  Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot out today due to the holiday weekend.  For that reason, I will try and check out all of them below.

  • 51gnsBMRkEL._AC_US200_  Art of Dying – Nevermore (EP) – (Vices and Virtues Music):  I enjoyed their album that came out last December, ‘Rise’.  What a nice surprise to get some new music so quickly.

  •  81d8nFRfIlL._SX466_  Freddie Mercury – Messenger of the Gods: The Singles Collection – (Hollywood Records): There is no video released specifically for this release, so I will include one for “The Great Pretender”.

“We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Dee Snider

Dee Snider reimagined “We’re Not Gonna Take It” into a ballad and an acoustic version for charity. The song and video was done to raise awareness for kid’s cancer.  The video was directed by Criss Angel and proceeds will go to Criss Angel’s HELP (Heal Every Life Possible) charity.

It was too good and too important an issue not to share.  If you are moved to, please donate.

Friday New Releases – August 26th

IT IS FRIDAY!!!!  There are a bunch of new releases today and should be something for everyone.  There has been so much going on lately, that this new release Friday I am actually excited about.  There is some Rock, Dance/Pop, Country and so much more.  Let me know what peaks your interest.  My interest are peaked on the ones highlighted in Blue.

On a different note, there are 3 releases out today from Frontiers Music Sri.  My question to them is why in the hell would you release albums from 3 of your artists that are pretty much the same genre on the exact same day????  That perplexes me as people have limited funds to spend on music so by putting them out on the same day, you can’t really expect someone to buy all three or am I wrong.  Plus, supporting all 3 albums with promotions at the same time seems ridiculous.  Can you even give each artist the attention they deserve?  I don’t think so.  Alright, off my soap box.

  • 51YSV4oD7sL._AC_US160_  Michael Sweet – One Sided War – (Rat Pak Records):  Michael Sweet is back with a new solo album and this is the one release this week that will get played first.  Michael has put out so much music over the last couple years and it has all been great whether it was the last couple Stryper Albums (which were heavy) or his release with George Lynch.  His solo stuff has been both on the lighter side and the heavy side.  I think I am hoping for an album more on the rock side this go ’round and if this song is any indication, I might just get what I want.

New Metallica Song – “Hardwired”

I missed this last night, but Metallica has a new song called “Hardwired” off their upcoming album ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’.  The new album will be released on November 18th!

I have never been a huge Metallica fan, but at times they do have some brilliance so I always check out their music when released.  Their last album, which was 8 years ago, was ‘Death Magnetic’ which I didn’t really enjoy.  So hoping for better on the new album.

The new song isn’t bad, but only heard it twice so far.  It is definitely fast and hard!  More like old school Metallica in my opinion. Let me know what you think.

Friday New Releases – August 19th

Friday is finally here!  Work has been so busy, but we are done with our current project and I can hopefully not stress so much for a little bit.  To unwind I always listen to music and their are a couple I am really interested in and they are quite polar opposites of each other.  On one side is Lindsey Stirling and the other is Trapt.  Not even close to the same genre, but equally excited about both.  All my interests, as normal, are marked in blue.

  • 51vv4Gxv5ZL._AC_US160_  Lindsey Stirling – Brave Enough – (Lindseystomp Records):  This classical crossover sensation is back with her 3rd album.  Her violin playing is exceptional.  As a quarterfinalists on America’s Got Talent, she has gone on to such bigger and better things and I am now a huge fan.  Can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us.

Friday New Releases – August 12th

Happy Friday!!  More new releases today, but sadly, I am not interested in anyone of these. Maybe ZZTop.  Justin Moore’s album title sums it up for me – ‘Kinda Don’t Care’.  What that means for me is it is a good week to catch up on all the releases that have come out over the last few weeks.  Hopefully there is something in here for you though.

  • 51f+i1rx+CL._AC_US160_  Young the Giant – Home of the Strange – (Fueled by Ramen)
  • 61Ws1qZ99iL._AC_US160_  ZZ Top – Live: Greatest Hits From Around the World – (Surestone Records)
