Friday New Releases – August 4th

Thank goodness July is over.  The Friday new releases were limited during July, but things start to pick up in a big way in August.  There are some great ones coming out today to get your month started out just right.  As I am in the midst of busy season at work, these releases will help get through it.  Hopefully there is something for you.  My picks are highlighted in Blue.

  • 51pk40Y5iKLDEF LEPPARD – 30th Anniversary Edition of HYSTERIA!!! – (Mercury):  It is hard to believe it has been 30 years since this release.  Amazing how time flies.  This album sounds just as good now as it did back then.  It is a classic.  With songs like “Women”, “Animal”, “Armageddon It”, “Love Bites”, “Hysteria” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, you have the ultimate rock album.  There is only one edition to buy for me and it is the full on edition with 5 CDs, 2 DVDs, a couple books and everything you would want.  You have to get this!!!!  I already have and it will be there when I get home from work.

  • 61yXrpnKLCL._AC_US218_  The Winery Dogs – Dog Years Live in Santiago & Beyond 2013-2016 – (Loud & Proud Records).  Three outstanding musicians bring us their first live album.  Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan make up The Winery Dogs and I couldn’t be more excited to grab this.  If you haven’t heard them, you are definitely missing out.  Give this one a listen!!  This should also be waiting on me when I get home!!!

  • 61UOXBW-THL._AC_US218_  Kryptonite – Kryptonite – (Frontiers Records SRL):  Frontiers Records has a way of bringing people together.  This group brings Jakob Samuel (The Poodles), Pontus Egberg (Treat), Robban Back (Moustasch) and Mike Palace (Palace) together to form a sort of supergroup.  I really love Jakob Samuel and The Poodles, so anything he does really peaks my interest.  Heres to hoping for something special.

T-Shirts, T-Shirts, T-Shirts

I have a new obsession (one of many).  I have started buying band T-Shirts.  My daughter laughs at me for going into a store where she buys clothes and then I grab a couple things as well.

Oh well, it doesn’t stop me.  It all started harmlessly early last year with shirts that showed music in some way…

Turntables & Vinyl #7 – Record Store Day – April 22, 2017

Today is the 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day.  My daughter and I didn’t get up too early to head down to our local record stores, but it was early for us on a Saturday.  We left the house around 8am to get to Lunchbox Records which was to open at 9am.  We knew it would be crowded, but we had NO IDEA!!!!

We arrived around 8:40am and the place was absolutely PACKED!!  The  line stretched around another building and turned and started going down the street.  There had to be over 200 people in line.  I am not a patient man, so this didn’t sit well with me.  I decided to head over to Repo Records as they would normally open at 10am and I would see what their line looked like.  Luckily it was just down the street about 5-8 minutes.

We arrived around 8:45-50 (I don’t remember exactly and it is really not key to the story).  The line was really good.  It had only about 40 people, so we figured we would wait it out.  It turns out they had just opened and were only letting a few people in at a time so we timed it perfectly.

Def Leppard – And There Will Be A Next Time…Live From Detroit (2017)

Part 3 of the Def Leppard Live Series is ‘And There Will Be A Next Time…Live From Detroit’.  This the latest released from Def Leppard and sparked my reason behind reviewing all three of the Live albums they have released.  The other two are as follows:

‘And There Will Be A Next Time…’ was recorded back over the Summer of 2016 in Detroit, MI (obviously) in support of their album that was simply titled ‘Def Leppard’.  The release was in both CD form and in Blue Ray / DVD and consisted of 17 tracks.  The track listing is below:

Def Leppard – Viva! Hysteria (2013)

In Part 2 of this 3 Part series of the Def Leppard Live albums we are tackling Viva! Hysteria (If you want to read Part 1 just click on Mirror Ball: Live & More).

Per Joe Elliott, Def Leppard has been asked numerous times to play one of their albums in its entirety.  At the times they had been asked, they were busy supporting an album and didn’t feel it was appropriate.  Along comes the day when they are in between albums and the time felt right.

They took up residency at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from March 22nd to April 13th in 2013.  From those shows comes the release of Viva! Hysteria.  The 2 CD set and DVD of the show make for a great addition to your Def Leppard collection.  I have to admit I am mad at myself for not making it out to Vegas to see this show as it would have been a special show to have seen.  I have seen them so many times, but this would probably have been the coolest.

Def Leppard – Mirror Ball: Live & More (2011)

If I remember correctly, there was an interview with Joe Elliott a long, long time ago asking him about Cover albums and Live albums and why Def Leppard hadn’t done any of these albums. His response was something to the effect that bands that have nothing else to give do those kind of albums (not a direct quote).  I tried finding the article, but was unsuccessful.  Well, 1 Cover album and now 3 Live albums later, I guess Def Leppard has nothing to give…Okay, we know that is wrong as Def Leppard has still put out great albums in between all these Live albums and the Cover album.  His opinion of them has apparently changed.

This post will be the first in a 3 part series discussing Def Leppard’s 3 Live Albums including ‘Mirror Ball’,‘Viva! Hysteria’, and ‘And There Will Be A Next Time…’.  We will start the series in chronological order starting with the 2011 release ‘Mirror Ball: Live & More’.

‘Mirror Ball’ is the first official release on CD for any Def Leppard recording.  I have bootlegs of live albums, but glad to see an official release of live material.  It was long overdue.  The album was a 2 CD set and included a Bonus DVD as well which I will discuss later in the post.  The CD packaging is one of those old thick plastic cases that doesn’t hold up well. I cracked the back of the case on the day I bought it.  I don’t remember what I did, but it is nicely cracked now.

Turntables & Vinyl #6 – “Re-Spin” Led Zeppelin & Van Halen

Ever since I started the whole resurgence in my vinyl collection which started from nothing just 10 months ago, I have been trying to put together “The List” of all the albums that are a must have for my collection.  The list is long and it is going to be expensive to put together.

For me, albums from the 70’s must be in vinyl as that was the medium of choice at the time.  That means that I need to have Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, early AC/DC, Queen and of course KISS, just to name a few.  I am off to a good start with KISS thanks to the box of records I mentioned back in the first Turntables & Vinyl post.

img_1263

The 80’s is the decade I grew up in and fell in love with music so there has to be a ton of vinyl from those years as well.  Def Leppard, Van Halen, more AC/DC, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Ratt and any other rock band from that era.  The collection is growing, but the list doesn’t seem to get smaller.

Friday New Releases – February 10th

Welcome to another Friday!  It is time for more new releases and I hope you have some money saved up because one of these is quite pricey.  I know I won’t be getting it anytime soon…if ever.   Not a lot this week, but one I am getting for sure…My picks are in Blue.  And that is The Michael Bolton you see on the list.

  • 616o1njxsrl-_ac_us174_  Def Leppard – And There Will Be A Next Time…Live From Detroit (Blue-Ray/DVD/CD) – (Eagle Rock Entertainment):  Def Leppard is back with another live concert DVD and CD.  Mine has been on pre-order for a couple weeks and should be at my house when I get home.  Can’t wait for this one.

  •  41xza0r4ubl-_ac_us160_  Bon Jovi – Vinyl Box Set (24 LPs) – (Universal Records):  At over $400 this set is for the diehard fan.  I am no longer diehard, but there are 2 albums in here I want that have never been on vinyl before…’Keep the Faith’ and ‘These Days’.  Two of their best albums that I will pick up sometime soon.  Here is a video from their newest album which is included in this set.
