Def Leppard – ‘Visualize’ (1993) – DVD Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

Def Leppard were trying to keep product moving to keep the fans happy between albums. They didn’t want the gaps between albums, that tended to be rather long, to not have anything come out. So, on October 5, 1993, they released another VHS video and this one was called ‘Visualize’. My copy is on DVD which came in 2001, but the original was a VHS only edition. It contained  promo videos, interviews and concert footage and it won a 1993 Metal Edge Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Home Video.” It ended up selling only around 50,000 copies in the States. I know I had it in VHS, got rid of that when the DVD came out and bought it again. On DVD, it is coupled with another VHS only release called ‘Video Archive’ which we will talk about later.

When you start the DVD, it makes you pick which language you want and it was so tempting to pick something other than English, but I went with the English version since I am uneducated American who only knows one language. When you click “Visualize” it starts out with some live footage and an interview short with the band, first Joe Elliott then Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, Rick Allen and then Rick Savage. Good to see all the guys getting face time.

Video wise, the first one is off “Hysteria” and was the final single called “Rocket”. The reason it is here is the video ‘Historia’ was released prior to “Rocket” coming out as a video single. The “Rocket” video is a great one with the band in a warehouse with TVs all around showing clips of rockets and the band’s favorite artist that inspired them like Bowie and Elton John for just a few. The next video was for “Switch 625” and this was done only as a tribute to the passing of the band’s great guitarist, Steve Clark. He has been missed. The video is prefaced by a Japanese interview where Steve talks and jokes around. The band then talks about what he means to them. Very touching tribute.

You get more band interviews where they talk about Rick’s accident and his playing drums again, the the time where Phil, Steve and Savage was the back-up band with Ben E. King and he sang “Stand By Me”. Then Joe was on a show called Nighthawk which also had Ron Wood from The Stones as well as Hothouse Flowers and they all jammed to “Gene Genie” and the 2nd time he was on the show they did “Ziggy Stardust”. They talked about other side things and Joe worked with Hothouse Flowers quite a bit. They also talked about making albums and making videos. Then finally a video with “Let’s Get Rocked” which is a computer animated video from the ‘Adrenalize’ album as are the rest of the videos.

After that, the talk about the newest member of the band Vivian Campbell. But of course, that was after we get Brian May joining them on stage at the Freddie Mercury Tribute show which was Vivian’s official debut. Too bad they couldn’t show the whole 3 song set. After that we got a full set of videos with “Make Love Like a Man”, “I Wanna Touch You” and “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”. “Make Love Like A Man” was great with the band on stage and interspersed with old silent movie clips. Really fun. “I Wanna Touch You’s” video is nothing but concert footage and was a good time had by all kind of thing. Then you get the ballad for “HYENSSB” and man it was high-class artsty stuff like they did for “Hysteria” and “Love Bites”. I guess the ballads needed that kind of treatment.

After those videos it was a ton of interview clips from around the world before we get to the next set of videos. First up is “Tonight” which is done in black & white and another artsy type video. Almost a creepy, horror type vibe to it. With “Heaven Is”, the video was very cutting edge with a lot of animation style added to the live shots. Some really cool effects added to the video and one of the more interesting videos they have ever done.

Up next were videos of them playing soccer and then talking about the fans then right in to the last video from ‘Adrenalize’ with “Stand Up (Kick Love In To Motion)”. This is another high budget artsy video video. Even today, I’m still not sure what is going on with people walking around holding chairs and tables and so many weird bizarre things and it was great. Then it was on to the band’s return to Sheffield for a homecoming show. We get live performances such as “Two Steps Behind”, “Love Bites” and “Photograph”. All really fantastic performances and Joe sounded great. We talked about these songs when we discussed the bootleg DVD of this show earlier in the series. The last bit are clips of the guys talking about the future of Def Leppard.

The video was about an hour and 1/2 and a great set of videos and interviews. It was entertaining and a great piece of Leppard history captured for the Adrenalize era. The band always does a great job putting out solid product. I don’t have any complaints with this except the bit I said earlier about it being nice if they could’ve shown the whole 3 song set for the Freddie Mercury Tribute show, but I understand why they couldn’t. At the same time, full version of some of the songs from the interview clips would’ve been cool too. But overall, not bad at all. My Overall Score is a 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars. Now, “don’t forget to brush your teeth before you go to bed and if you are driving, don’t forget your car!!” (Final words of Joe Elliott in the video).

  1. “Don’t forget to brush your teeth before you go to bed and if you are driving, don’t forget your car!!” Ah, wise words from Mr. Joe Elliott! I need to hunt this one down since ‘Adrenalize’ is my favorite Def Leppard album. It’s not my favorite era of the band, but it’s my favorite album of theirs. The music video for “I Wanna Touch U” is simple, but it showcases a band that is trying their best to move forward and be the best freaking rock band they can be during a difficult time for them. At least that’s how I see it!

      1. Oh yeah and that’s fine it’s not a favorite of yours as we all hear things differently. I will say though that “Make Love Like a Man” is horrible, even with Phil’s rap (which is the best part of the song, in my opinion).

  2. I never bought this at the time and actually I don’t ever recall seeing it to be honest with you. lol. Personally my favourite track from Adrenalize is Stand Up and a few others but for the collector in you its a good score. Crazy to think that VHS videos were selling those kind of numbers yet albums can’t sell 50,000 nowadays unless your a Swiftie lol
    Awesome writeup as always Sir!

  3. I actually never had this on VHS, for whatever reason. I had the ones before, and the one after, but I skipped this! I think it was because I just wasn’t into Adrenalize.

And John…I also only know one language…and I live in a bilingual country! You are no dumb American. You are an extremely intelligent and well spoken American. And well written, too!
