Def Leppard – ‘Live Bites’ (Bootleg CD) – Album Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

Sometimes, when you buy a bootleg CD you have no idea what you are buying. This is one of those cases. I couldn’t find anything about the release other than the front cover. All it said was “Def Leppard – Live Bites” and it listed out a handful of classic Leppard songs. And it was cheap. Those two things were all I had to go on, so I bought it.

When I received the CD in the mail, It didn’t offer much else to it either. It did have a full track listing, but it was only 11 songs and from the looks of it, not a full live show…only pieces. There were two songs from ‘Slang’ and nothing later that told me it was from around 1997 at the very least. There was nothing in the booklet…ha! booklet…one sheet of paper…so not really a booklet…that gave me any indication of where these songs were recorded. The back of the CD had something that said the following…

Having sold over 65 million albums worldwide since their debut release in 1980 and proved themselves as one of rock music’s hardest working and consistently powerful live bands, Def Leppard remain one of only five rock groups who can claim two separate original 10 million-plus selling albums.

Yeah…that was no help.

The only thing that somewhat helped was when I burned the CD to Apple Music it said FM Broadcast. That was it though, nothing more than that. So, I dropped the needle. Oops…sorry, it is a CD. I dropped the laser on to the disc and “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” was up first and it was a full version so it wasn’t taken from the Montreal show I talked about last week. The band sounded great, but one thing happened that I absolutely hate on a live show. The song faded out and everything stopped, silence, before the next song kicked in. That annoys the crap out of me. So, this was definitely not a full show and who’s to know if the songs are all even from the same show.

The band goes in to “Foolin'” and “Animal” and they play them just as good as you’d expect. That is at least one thing about these songs, they are all still good. But the treats are on here for me are the two songs from ‘Slang’. We get “Work It Out” and “Slang”. The one thing that is obvious about these two songs is how different they are from the rest of the band’s catalog. Live, Joe’s sings them differently and their tone and style don’t really match the rest of their collection. That isn’t a bad thing, just an observation. I like these songs a lot because they are different. And I love how on “Slang” they incorporate “Rock of Ages” famous line…“Gunter glieben glauchen globen.”

After “Slang”, we get the classic “Photograph” and I love that song so much. It was the song that made me Leppard fan for life when I heard it on MTV back in 1983. I already knew about the band and liked them, but this song struck me in a way that the band became a part of my life. After this one we get a long run of ‘Hysteria’ songs starting with “Rocket”, “Armageddon It”, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and “Love Bites”. That gives us 5 songs from ‘Hysteria’ on a setlist of 11 tracks. Way too many. We only get 3 from ‘Pyromania’, 2 from ‘Slang’ and 1 from ‘Adrenalize’. Nothing from the first two and nothing from ‘Retroactive. Boo!!!

The ‘Hysteria’ songs sound great, but honestly, I’ve heard them so many times, I’m okay without them especially songs like “Rocket” and “Armageddon It”. I don’t ever tire of Sugar or ‘Love Bites’. The final song on the CD is “Let’s Get Rocked”…what a horrible song to end the set with…ugh!! Honestly, this live version is pretty good. High energy, the crowd is in to it and the band sounds tight. I actually enjoyed it…shhhh…don’t tell anyone.

And that is it. Short and sweet….well not sugary sweet. It is not a full show, the songs fade in and out and that sucks for a live show, and not enough variety from all their albums. The plus side, the sound quality is fantastic, the crowd noise is perfect (sounds like live songs) and it was cheap. However, I won’t recommend this one but it ain’t the worst one I’ve heard. My Overall Score is a 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars. It is an average, okay disc…but nothing great.

  1. I love when they did the “gunter, glieben, glauchen, globen” part during “Slang.” I thought that was really clever! But man, the font for the “Def Leppard” portions on the disc and cover is awful. So, uninspiring and not Def Leppard-like at all. The setlist is horrible and like you said, way too many songs from ‘Hysteria.’
