I love to collect singles with picture sleeves and I love to find them in the wild. I generally will never buy a single on eBay or Discogs. However, there was one big exception and that was for the song “Photograph” by Def Leppard. The song is off the album ‘Pyromania’ and was the very first single released for the album and it was huge. It was released in January 1983 and went to #12 on the Top 40 and #1 on the US Mainstream Rock Chart for an impressive six weeks. The U.K. didn’t see them have as much success as it only went to #66, but the band was not overly loved in its home country because they felt the band were sellouts to the U.S. market..which truth be told, they were. But the single I wanted was a U.K. only release and I had to buy it online as I wasn’t expecting to ever find it in the wild in the U.S.

Now, why I did I have to have this U.K. only version? Simple…the cover is a 3-Dimensional cover that folds out to look like an actual camera. The Pop-up camera picture sleeve was very rare and only limited to 500 copies and I have now have one. See it below… 

…but that isn’t the only cool thing about it. When you look into the view finder you see a photo of Marilyn Monroe. But…the song is NOT about Marilyn Monroe. She is only in the video for the song, see the info below which will talk more about the song. Now, I think this was pretty cool and a must have for any Def Leppard collector.

One interesting fact, “Photograph” was one of the last contributions to the band from Pete Willis. The second interesting fact, the keyboards are done by none other than “She Blinded Me With Science” Thomas Dolby. And apparently in the video, Joe Elliott does what might be the first flying spread eagle split on MTV.  It was later outdone by David Lee Roth in Van Halen’s video for “Jump” (according to Songfacts.com). The song was the opening single for the album and went to #12 on the Top 40 and #1 on the US Mainstream Rock Chart.

A-SIDE:

First, before we go in to the song, just look at the labels. Those cool silver Vertigo labels are the best, are they not.

“Photograph”.  The song is about an obsession with a woman and all you have of her is that photograph.  The Marilyn Monroe part was added for the video to help tell the story.  And it captures it perfectly.  As the video shows that obsession going a little too far. The song was perfect in my book and the video was mesmerizing.  The two together captured my attention like nothing ever had before and every time MTV showed, I turned up the volume!  The song has such a melodic melody and the guitar solo and background vocals were all spot on thanks to Mutt Lange behind the boards.  The guitar riff on the song that is played throughout is instantly recognizable. More heart pounding drums as Rick Allen was maturing in to an amazing drummer. Joe’s vocals had also matured and his tone was perfect for this style of music and he owned it.

B-SIDE:

The B-Side is “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” and would become the ballad all ballads are compared to for me. The song is dramatic, heartfelt and Joe’s vocals are perfectly suited with all the emotion needed to convey the lyrics. There is a sadness in the tone, the vocals and when the solo kicks in from Pete, it is transformative. The solo is quick, but pulls out the song’s feels and truly delivers. A powerful, emotional track that was what the band needed and MTV certainly liked it.

And there you have it. One of the coolest pieces I have in my Def Leppard collection. It is a prize for me and was worth every penny. I hope you enjoyed the walk through of the single. Let’s talk about another single for the album next.
