Def Leppard – “Too Late For Love” (1983) – 12″ Single (The Def Leppard Collection)

The final single for the album ‘Pyromania’ was unplanned. “Too Late For Love” would be the fourth single and was released on November 25, 1983. A song that wasn’t going to be a single, but due to the success fo the first three singles, they thought let’s release another one and it went to #9 on the US Mainstream Rock chart, but didn’t hit the Top 40 as no official video was done for it.

The single I have is a 12″ Single and it is also out of the U.K. like the “Photograph” single from last week. However, this I actually found in the wild here in the States so I grabbed it up quickly. You have “Too Late for Love” on one side and the other side has two tracks, “Foolin'” from Pyromania and “High ‘N’ Dry (Saturday Night)” off the ‘High ‘N’ Dry’ album. I’m sure that was done to help drive sales of the prior album…and it worked.

SIDE 1:

Then through the misty fog of the next song, they slow things down a little with the power ballad “Too Late For Love”, but is it a ballad? It is dark and eerie and when the power comes in it turns it in to more of rock song. A song about love and regret had all the emotions needed in the vocals as Joe could hit some really cool screams and notes. The darkness of the song really added to why this is one of the coolest ballads they have ever done and they’ve done a lot. Now, I said there was no official video done for the single and there wasn’t. This came around later.

SIDE 2:

If you thought the single was good, hold on to your hats. “Foolin’” kicks off Side 2 and it is a song about love and heartbreak inspired by a girl Joe had met while on tour in the U.S. He fell for her, but apparently she cheated on him…Bitch!! The song has an acoustic opening and sounds like another darker song. The song has elements similar to “Photograph” and I am sure that is by design. The chorus with their multi-layered harmonies are perfection and Mutt’s influence is all over this thing. One of those songs you never tire of hearing as it don’t get much better than this. This was the third single off the album and it went to #28 on the Top 40 and #9 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The final Top 40 single from the album as the fourth single didn’t chart in the Top 100.

“High ‘N’ Dry (Saturday Night)” is another heavy rocker. The take no-prisoners attitude sees the boys ready to party and pillage with their crunchy guitars, destructive drums and bombastic bass. Joe sounds angry and ready to party as his vocals have that perfect rock grit that delivers another perfect rocker. The song would make a huge list in the 80’s. It wound up on the “Filthy Fifteen” which was the Parent Music Resouce Center (PMRC) due to its lyrical content of alcohol use and intoxication. For the metal community this was a badge of honor!!

  1. The fact that they included “High ‘n’ Dry (Saturday Night)” on side two for the single is just wow! It doesn’t really fit with “Foolin'” and “Too Late for Love,” but it’s a killer track, so who cares. Also, on a side note, I think the version of “Too Late for Love” on ‘Drastic Symphonies’ is pretty cool, especially with Joe Elliott singing with his younger self.

      1. Yeah, it’s not a memorable release overall. But I liked the “Too Late for Love” symphonic version (as mentioned before) and the symphonic version of “Gods of War.” I’m curious to read your thoughts on that album as you move further in the Def Leppard series!

  2. Smart marketing move to include a track from the previous album for the fans that just got onboard with Pyromania. I only bought full albums in the 80s so this stuff is cool to see.

  4. The praise “You could release every song as a single” is usually a gross exaggeration, but “Pyromania” is one of the very few albums where it is truly appropriate.

  6. It’s interesting how that labeling of content as ‘filthy’ / ‘parental advisory’ often ended up having the opposite of the intended effect. It probably ended up driving up some demand & like you said, a source of pride for the artists themselves!
