Def Leppard – ‘Animal Instinct: The Def Leppard Story’ – Book Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

I remember August 3, 1987 really well. I ran to the store and bought the Vinyl, CD and cassette of Hysteria and on the way home, I opened the cassette and put it in the car stereo and cranked it. And the rest is history. Def Leppard was my favorite band in 1987 and after waiting four years since ‘Pyromania’, I couldn’t wait for the new album. When I got home, I opened the rest and inside the Vinyl, I remember an order form for the Def Leppard book called ‘Animal Instinct’ written by David Fricke who was Rolling Stone magazine’s senior editor and the photos were by Ross Halfin. I remember filling that in and sending a check and several weeks later the book arrived.

Now, years later, I would sell the book on eBay and make a hefty profit. Then years later, I regretted it and bought it again. After re-reading it, I remembered a lot of what I read the first time. The book is fantastic. David did a great job writing the biography of Def Leppard. He covers the whole gamut of the band which at this time wasn’t very old. The book opens with the car crash that took Rick’s arm and the effect that had on everyone, but it quickly moves to the origin story of Def Leppard and how the members came to be members of the band. There are some great pictures including the first photo of the band. That is what is great about this book. Not just the stories but the photos that go along with it.

There is a great chapter that lists every club show Leppard played prior to their debut album and a lot of the shows you get stories and how much they were paid. Man, they were not paid much at first and to think what they command now is mind boggling. You get a chapter on Def Leppard touring America and the problems that caused back home with their UK fans. Rather silly and stupid actually. The British press are assholes for sure.

Then of course, you get what you really want to hear about and that is the “Mutt Factor”. The impact of Robert John “Mutt” Lange had on the band and the albums. And he was basically a fifth member of the band. These stories are great as you get to see the inner workings of making “High & Dry”, “Pyromania” and “Hysteria” all in juicy details. It is cool to see how it all came together and how they changed their sounds. The fact they recorded these albums bit by bit and pieced them all together is nuts and then having to learn to play the songs afterwards…wow! Totally crazy.

David goes in to detail about Pete Willis being kicked out and Phil Collen joining the band. The incredible journey of the band with super stardom thanks to ‘Pryomania’. And then all the drunken antics of the Terror Twins who are Phil and Steve Clark. They got in to a lot of trouble. If that isn’t enough, we get details on the band living in Tax Exile from the UK as the British Government would’ve taken 60% of their earnings if they resided in the UK for more than 2 months. That is a lot of money going to the government and the Royal Family. I don’t blame them in the least for leaving. Heck, Bowie, the Beatles, the Stones all did the same thing.

Finally we get to the long, long drawn out recording process of the album ‘Hysteria’ which took four years to do thanks to Rick’s accident and the parade of producers that rolled through as Mutt was originally unable to do the album. Jim Steinman’s attempt was a disaster, the boys tried to do it on their own and then when Mutt was finally able to help, he basically scrapped or re-worked everything and then delay after delay. The money was adding up. After years and years the album was done, then the band goes in and in 10 days basically records another album of songs to be used solely as B-Sides. Mutt thought they should hold on to them for another album, but the boys didn’t want to have another album of songs that were basically 4 years old when they came out. And those B-Sides were really great. And that is where our story ends as ‘Hysteria’ hadn’t come out yet since this book was part of it’s release.

If you are Def Leppard fan, you can’t get better than David Fricke’s book ‘Animal Instinct’. It is a firsthand account of the story of Def Leppard as the boys were heavily involved with David in the writing of the book. They were interviewed profusely for this book and it shows as the stories are so good, so detailed and since they come from the guys, they are honest and true. David does a great job piecing them all together and mixed with Ross’ photos, you aren’t getting a better story than right here. If you don’t have a copy, eBay and Amazon are great places to find copies. So go out and get you one like I did. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars as I really enjoyed it and have read this one several times.

  1. I bought this book in Toronto around that time. Unfortunately some pages started getting the loose as the glue/bind wasn’t holding which sucked. I held onto it and than it suffered the ultimate demise when I had it with a bunch of other books in a box in a basement years ago that we were renting and it flooded. Slumlords….
From what I recall it was a very well written book as you mentioned and the pics by Halfin were great all well…
    Damn I miss 87

  2. On one hand surprised Fricke never followed up on this with a revised edition yet on the other hand pleased he didn’t, instead choosing to preserve this piece of essential Leppard history as it was.

This book has sat on my shelf for as long as I can remember and still makes the occasional appearance. Doubt would ever part with it.

    Nice review \m/
