Def Leppard – ‘Live: In The Round, In Your Face’ (1989) – DVD Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

Def Leppard had the biggest selling album of their career. A tour that lasted for 227 dates throughout the world and to commemorate that achievement, they released the final piece to the “Hysteria” puzzle with ‘In the Round, In Your Face’ (according to the back cover of the CD Video I have (or Laserdisc). I had picked this up when I purchased a Hysteria Tour Book from a guy in Hawaii. For some reason, he included this and was charging the same price as everybody else that was only selling a Tour Book. So, I had to jump on that. And what a cool piece it is even though I have no way of playing it. But I also had the VHS at one time, now I have the DVD collection that holds both ‘Historia’ and ‘In the Round, In Your Face’ all on one disc.

The video contains a full Def Leppard live show at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado and additional footage from shows at The Omni in Atlanta, Georgia, compiled from footage shot during the band’s 1987/1988 US Hysteria World Tour. Considering I was at at least one of those Atlanta shows, I could be in there somewhere (I never found myself) but it is cool to have this in the collection. I think most of this is from the Denver so the chances are slim you would find me at all in the Atlanta pieces. Apparently, the songs “Don’t Shoot Shotgun”, “Let It Go”, “Tear It Down” and “Travelin’ Band” were performed and recorded but did not make the VHS or DVD.  I guess they were only budgeted for a certain amount of time on the release.

The video opens with the Lunar Mix of “Rocket” playing and some behind the scenes, pre-concert footage. We then get the Dirty Harry segment and Joe shouts out “I Said Welcome to My Show” and the guitars go nuts with riffs for “Stagefright”, one of the band’s best songs to open the show. But the curtain doesn’t drop. I remember when I saw the first of 3 shows on this tour, I thought something was wrong and the curtain didn’t fall for some reason. I then figured out they wait until after the first verse before dropping the curtain and then pandemonium set in as the crowd goes nuts and the band runs around all around the stage set up in the round so there are four front rows. They are in your face…wait, that is why they called the video that…I get it now!! Kidding, I knew that already.

The quickly race through the song and go in to “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” from ‘Pyromania’. Now, let me get right on this topic before we go further. The setlist is made up basically songs from ‘Pyromania’ (7) and ‘Hysteria’ (6) with only one from the ‘High ‘N Dry’ and that is it. Nothing from the first album. I mean we are only 4 albums in so why nothing from ‘On Through the Night’…baffling. Soapbox done. After some boob flashes, a killer solo, they go in “Women”, the first from ‘Hysteria’ and the first single here in the States. Phil goes in to the opening riff after some clever remarks from Joe. It is strange seeing Phil with his shirt on and hair. Speaking of hair, Joe’s mullet might the best mullet ever. While watching, you realize these guys must be exhausted by the end because with four front rows, they are constantly moving around, except for Rick Allen who sits center stage (that revolves) and bangs those drums.

The lights go low, the lights come out (not phones…real lighters as this is 87/88) and the band goes in to “Too Late For Love” and man it sounds fantastic. The editing on this is fantastic as so many great visual moments with the band members with the crowd backdrop. ”Hysteria” is up next as things slow down a little. Joe has some echo on the vocals to help it sound like the album a little. One of my favorite songs by the band played live to perfection. It is weird seeing Joe with a guitar (or whatever that strange looking thing was).

Then comes the War Songs…yep, “Gods of War” and “Die Hard the Hunter”, but not before Steve Clark gets introduced and he does a little solo (all sounding like the guitar in “Gods of War”). The song kicks in and I love how they keep all the sound effects and Regan’s as well as Thatcher’s speech parts. A cool song and glad they played it live. The place goes dark again, the helicopter sounds soar in and then it is time for “Die Hard the Hunter”, the backing vocals are great and Joe screams out he opening verse and this is another one of their coolest songs.

The terror twins get introduced and Phil is on his acoustic guitar and Steve is on his Gibson 18 string Razor and they go in to “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak”. It starts out all acoustic flamenco sounding, slow and steady and then kicks in about half way through and goes all power ballad on us with emphasis on the power with the full band. To keep the energy going they whip through “Foolin'” next and straight in to “Armageddon It”. Both high energy tracks that kept the crowd revved up. Oh yeah, Phil’s shirt is now gone…still has the hair though.

We get two more from ‘Hysteria” with “Animal” up first and they keep it close to the studio track. Joe then goes in to a little speech and gives praise to the “Thunder God”, Rick Allen. He starts beating the drums to the beat of their biggest song, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and the crowd goes nuts. This part shows why they were one of the biggest bands in the world at this time. Phil whips out his electric guitar and gets a solo full of flashing lights, lasers and fast flying fingers on the fret. The editing is done with every note it changes angles and the faster he goes the faster the pictures change. It is dizzying.

When Phil is done we get the famous words from Rick Allen…”Gunter glieben glauten globen”…and “Rock of Ages” kicks in to full gear. The song has a very long break where Joe gets the crowd to chant and singalong and in my opinion it is really, really long…I mean really long. I’m I remember from seeing this tour so many times, it never bothered me at the show, but it does watching the video. The only thing that bothers me about this, but not enough to reduce the greatness of this show. After the song, everyone takes their bows and heads under the stage while the lasers draw out Def Leppard on the big screen and then Marilyn Monroe. They come back up and crank through “Photograph” which is always a great closer. It is loud, bombastic and one of their best songs. The credits roll and we get the instrumental, “Switch 625”.

I haven’t watched this in years but it was still as exciting as when I watched it the last time and the time before that. I saw this tour three times and each time was as great as the prior. The stage is in the round and one of the best set-ups they had ever done. I really loved that presentation as it put them in the middle of the arena rather than far against one side. It made almost all the seats, great seats. The band was tight, the songs were great, Joe’s vocals were spectacular and I could go on and on about it, but I won’t. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars. It doesn’t get much better than this.

  1. I still remember buying this on VHS and the first place I watched it was at Tbone’s house. Your right Gods of War sounds stellar and they left all the sound effects in it etc. They were a lot like Bon Jovi at the time as with only BOTHB being played from the first two. When we saw Bon Jovi in the summer of 89 nothing was played from the first two albums….
I guess it was about selling the big seller albums at the time…
    Great writeup Sir

  2. The CD V or Laserdisc format is one I’ve never had anything on, I could count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually seen one in person. They’re really neat looking but finding a way to play them would be a pain. Looks like a killer set, I don’t recall that I’ve seen it.

  3. They recorded “Tear It Down”?!?! Dang it, I wish they kept that one in the final film/concert. But, other than, fantastic show! “Gods of War” and “Armageddon It” are major highlights for me. I wish the setlist included more tracks from their first two albums, but this was with Steve Clark, so they get a pass for that!
