Def Leppard – ‘Live Sheffield 1992’ (Bootleg DVD) – DVD Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

I like my bootlegs. A good bootleg is hard to find and when I come across one, I get all excited. This time was no different. I found this DVD on eBay called Def Leppard – ‘Live Sheffield 1992’ and took a chance. I’m glad I did because the picture quality and sound are all excellent. There is a reason for that. The show was recorded in full both for TV and for Radio as Joe mentions after the first song. But like all Bootlegs, there are a lot of errors on the packaging.

First error, the show is called ‘Live Sheffield 1992’. It was in Sheffield, England that part is true…well that and it was live. The 1992 part was the first error. The show is actually from Don Valley Stadium on June 6, 1993 not June 24, 1992. Then we get to the track listing and obviously this person doesn’t know Def Leppard. The song “Too Late For Love” is called “Too Late Forever” and the song “Rocket” is called “Rock It” ( I can see that as an honest mistake). And the last is “Two Steps Behind” listed as “Too Steps Behind”. There are not a ton of errors, but I do love it when they have them.

This show is not the full setlist. Sorry to disappoint. It is the 1 hour highlight show that was broadcast on Yorkshire TV and on Japanese TV and consisted of only 14 of the 20 shows played that night. It cuts all the solos, but it also cut some really great song choices, however, the quality of the video is so good and the editing is done so well, it feels like a single show and is really enjoyable regardless. Now, an interesting fact, the full show recording is the bootleg that is called “The Circus Comes to Town” which I want to get one day on CD. I believe it might be an audience recording, but still the full show is a great set of songs. Lep has released some of this performance officially on the Video Archive video they released a short time later. Still less songs then on here though. Let’s get in to this show.

If you remember the ‘In the Round, In Your Face’ show, Dirty Harry kicks that show off and does here as well except when he asks “You have to ask yourself one question”, this time it is now Joe going…”Do You Want to Get Rocked” as they kick in to “Let’s Get Rocked” off the ‘Adrenalize’ album. A cheesy but fun song live. Then we get a real treat as they go back to the ‘High ‘N Dry’ album and give us “Another Hit And Run” which sees Joe running back and forth across this massive stage getting the crowd all riled up.

Then Sav goes over to the keyboards to hit that cool, dark and eerie opening of “Too Late For Love”. Then for the next one Sav slams a slow bass groove as they kick in to “Hysteria” and it keeps things going smoothly and yet a little laid back. But that wouldn’t last long as then we get “Make Love Like A Man” which is more cheesiness fun. This time around Phil Collen even sings a complete verse and he sounds great. Oh, I forget to mention, Phil had no shirt from the beginning of the show and he still has hair though. And what is Vivian Campbell wearing, are those biker shorts or extremely tight jean shorts?? Either way man…”No, No, No”.

The quality of my DVD is better than this Youtube Video

They go back to the ‘Pyromania’ era and pull out “Foolin'” which is one of their best songs, period. Nothing real flashy, but done to perfection. They move up an album and bring us “Rocket” (not “Rock It”). This one has a cool solo part with Vivian and Phil goofing off a little, but making it interesting with what sounds they pull out of their guitars. A hard song to make sound like the records so why try. A great solo between the two. Towards the end the go all Zeppelin with “A Whole Lot of Love” before back to “Rocket”.

We then get another treat where they pull out a track that hasn’t even been released yet as they do an acoustic version of “Two Steps Behind” (which I think most versions are acoustic). This was soon to be released on the ‘Retroactive’ and it was featured in the movie “The Last Action Hero” with Arnold. I believe this was the first show it was played live, heck even Joe pulled out an acoustic guitar. The go back to electric but they keep the mood and temple slowdown as they play “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”. A great ballad from ‘Adrenalize’ and one of the better songs on that album.

Things get rocking again with a little Ram Jam’s “Black Betty” that turns in to “Armageddon It”. ”Armageddon It” is not one of my favorite tracks by the band but the crowd seems to like it so what do I know. Things start to look up for me as we get to the band’s killer live tracks and first up is their most famous track, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” with Rick Allen banging out that famous beat and the crowd screaming “Hey”. After everyone is ready, the guitars kick in and all is right with the world. Rick Allen then introduces the next one with the famous line “Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen” as the band keeps the pedal to the floor with “Rock of Ages”. That was it for the show…okay, not yet.

Time for the encore and they brings the lights down low and slow things down with “Love Bites” another powerful ballad in their arsenal of songs. It is really a beautiful song and ranks up there with “Hysteria” as a favorite. Vivian lays down a perfect, extended solo that really was perfect for the song. They end the show the way it should be ended with another one of my favorite tracks, “Photograph”. This song was really what took the band to the next level. Joe says it is about Marilyn Monroe, but I had heard that it really wasn’t that they embraced it that tale with the video. But if Joe says it is, then it is.

And that is the show. Not a complete show, but who really cares. When you get great sound, great picture and solid 14 track edited show, I’ll take it. The boys were tight, Joe’s voice sounded great and the only thing wrong with it was Vivian in those biker shorts/tight ass jean shorts, whatever they are. Not a good look any time. This is a great add to the collection and so glad I bought. Better than anticipated for a bootleg. You don’t always get this lucky. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars even if it wasn’t a full show, the editing made it feel like one.

    1. You mean for Lep or in general. I am not sure the total, but it has to be close to 50 I would think in total. Half of that falls in to the Kiss category. I don’t know why, but I love ’em and will buy any and all I see for my favorite bands. Especially the vintage ones from the 70’s and early 80’s

  1. Nice, money well spent on the boot that delivers! I caught em twice on this tour and they ignored the first two studio albums so hearing Another Hit and Run back then would have been something else. Awesome job as always Sir!

  2. Bootlegs are great for having access to a show or tour we don’t get in an official release, but honestly I think the real point of bootleg collecting is to see the hilarious errors that wind up on nearly every release. I don’t know how all these people screw up every single one.

  3. Dang, I just looked up the full setlist online, and it’s such a shame that “Gods of War” and “White Lightning” weren’t included on the bootleg. But, I’m more used to the setlist that was included on the bootleg version since it’s posted on youtube. I watched that show a ton during the pandemic and I still love it! Considering that Phil almost quit the band because of Steve’s death, it makes me happy seeing Phil smile and have a good time on stage throughout the show.
