Def Leppard – ‘Live in Argentina 1997’ (Bootleg DVD) – DVD Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

I know, we’ve been doing a lot of Def Leppard Bootlegs from the Slang era, well, I do have a lot from that time. So bare with me for one more item. This time though, it is a Bootleg DVD so we get to actually the boys playing. This one was filmed down in Argentina back in 1997 and was actually recorded and played on Canada’s MuchMusic. How do I know that? Well, in the top left hand corner of the screen throughout the show is their logo. Yes, someone videotaped the show off their television and later transferred it to DVD.

When I googled the show, AI had this to say about it…Def Leppard performed at Cine Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, Argentina on April 19, 1997, marking their first show in the city and country. The venue is located near the coast and east of the city center, and was built in an Art Deco style in July 1937...Couldn’t have said it better myself. If I’m not mistaken, the song “Photograph” from the show was not shown during the broadcast and sadly, as a result, that isn’t here on this DVD either. Heck, what did you expect, he/she recorded it straight from the broadcast.

The band at the time and still today is still Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Rick Allen, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell. And they are all in fine form for this show. The setlist is basically identical to the Montreal Show I reviewed a couple weeks ago. The big differences being the Montreal Show had “Photograph”, “Another Hit & Run” as well as “Miss You In a Heartbeat” sung by Phil Collen. The Argentina show doesn’t “Photograph” but it does have, “Action” (which is great) and “Make Love Like a Man” (which is a horrible song). The DVD also has “When Love & Hate Collide” instead of “Miss You In a Heartbeat”, but I think I like Phil Singing “Miss You…” better. Everything else is spot on in same order as well.

The show itself is fantastic. Great editing and all instruments can be heard and all is really not too bad. The biggest problem is that the picture is pretty grainy and the sound is a little soft so you have to turn it up pretty loud to get a good sound. This is not 4K or even HD for that matter. But it doesn’t matter. When you buy a bootleg, you know what you are in for.

Some of the great moments for me are the ‘Slang’ songs as I missed that tour and prior to me obtaining the Montreal show, I didn’t have any live versions in my collection. Now, no need for me to go in depth here as we’ve been through it all before. I will point out a couple things you can’t see from a CD show. For those keeping track, Phil is shirtless in this show, but he does have hair. Joe speaks to the crowd in his best Spanish he can muster at times, but mostly English.

“Slang” is one of the more interesting songs here as it seems to be more of a dance mix and extended greatly. Joe even brings a ton of beautiful women up on the stage to dance around. Sav really lays down some nasty bass grooves. It is a wild & crazy version of the song. And Joe has a lot of fun dancing with one of the girls.

Another highlight as always is “Switch 625” and this crowd was really loving it. They did the acoustic version of “Two Step Behind”, but “When Love & Hate Collide” was back to electric. Joe isn’t perfectly on key the whole time, but it was nice seeing this song as I didn’t have it on any other Slang era bootlegs. Once we get through the 4 song ru of Hysteria songs and “Let’s Get Rocked”, we get the encore.

The rowdy crowd starts chanting and singing their own song until the band comes back on stage. Joe & Sav change shirts and put on their Argentina Football jerseys…and for you U.S. folks out there, that is really soccer. “Rock of Ages” sees Rick Allen take the spotlight laying down the groove. The band comes in and closes out the show in style.

There you have it. It is a solid bootleg DVD even if the picture quality wasn’t the best because you could still make out everything. The sound, though soft, was still good and thankfully the stereo allowed me to crank it up enough to get a loud enough sound for me to enjoy. The band was still killing it back then (not that they aren’t now) and put on a fantastic show. It was cool getting all the songs from “Slang”. My Overall Score is a 3.5 out of 5.0 Stars. It ain’t perfect, but it ain’t bad either. Now, if you want to see this show…just go to YouTube.

      1. My tapes start drying up around 1997. All I really have are two concerts – Foo Fighters 1997, and Van Halen 1998. These are basically the last two recordings I have. MuchMusic really started to suck in the 90s, so I just tuned out.

  2. Hey, I’m from Argentina and I went to that show It was weird that a hard rock band play in that kind of venue.

I remember that a roadie chosed a couple of girls seated next to me to go to the stage and dance in “slang”

The show was broadcasted, I still have the audio tape, so I guess a bootleg CD should exist

The curious thing Is that the following day they played in a small pub for 200 people called Prix D Ami and the setlist was awesome including sone gems from Pyromania and High N Dry

  3. The setlist is boring, in my opinion, and like you, I would’ve prepared Phil sing “Miss You in a Heartbeat” over “When Love and Hate Collide.” I love Phil’s vocals!
