Ratt – ‘Detonator’ – Album Review

The year is 1990 and we are getting to the end of the Hair Metal era, but at the time, no one knew that end was coming.  Ratt released their fifth album in August of 1990 and it brings us to the end the long running stream of Platinum albums.  It is also the last Ratt album with the line-up that has been on all 5 of their albums.

  • Stephen Pearcy – vocals
  • Robbin Crosby – lead guitar
  • Warren DeMartini – lead guitar
  • Juan Croucier – bass guitar
  • Bobby Blotzer – drums

After the disappointing reception for ‘Reach for the Sky’ (although it did go Platinum), the band needed to make a change.  That change was not to use Beau Hill as producer on the next album as he had produced all previous albums to much success.  The band (or label) brought in powerhouse songwriter Desmond Child.  You know Desmond…he had great success writing with Kiss, Aerosmith and a few Bon Jovi classics.

And did he ever get involved in the songwriting as he has writing credits on 10 of the 11 tracks on the album.  Not only did Desmond assist with songwriting, he was also the executive producer along with Sir Arthur Payson.  While Ratt did maintain the classic Ratt sound which was a little bluesy and little sleazy, the songs were much more polished and contained more hooks than a fisherman’s tackle box.  It definitely leaned to a more Glam rock image than prior albums.

Matt Nathanson – “Way Way Back” – Single Review

Just a few short weeks ago, Matt Nathanson brought us a Def Leppard Tribute E.P. titled ‘Pryomattia’ which was a really nice surprise and damn near perfect.  Well, now Matt brings us an actual new song called “Way Way Back” which is supposed to be from a yet unannounced new album coming “soonish” as Matt puts it.

If there is one thing Matt Nathanson can do and that is write a great song.  The man has a way with lyrics and he delivers another sensational song.  The story is of a love lost but letting that person know that they won’t find someone that loves them as much as you did.  That when they realize what they lost they can find you in their memories.

I love lyrics like “Didn’t know that forever only meant forever till you found someone better” which is what I think most people really believe.  And “Radio just wanna hurt me, put you in every song” as who hasn’t gone through a break-up and every song on the radio reminded you of that person.  The song is so relatable and Matt has a way of making everything simple and crystal clear.

It is a love song that only Matt can write.  It is a fun, catchy little tune that will get you singing and “do-do-doing” right along.  If this is any indication of what is to come on the new album, I guess Matt will get more of my money as this will go on pre-order immediately when available…in vinyl of course!!

I would give this one 4.5 out of 5 stars if I had to rate which I guess I do since this is a review.  Give it a listen or go buy now and help support the artist.  It is the least you can do so we keep getting great new music from them.

The Wild Feathers – ‘Greetings From the Neon Frontier’ – Album Review

The Wild Feathers are back with their new album called ‘Greetings From the Neon Frontier’.  It is the band’s third studio album and it is a band that has quickly become a favorite of mine.  So my review might be slightly tainted as they can do no wrong in my book.

Who are the Wild Feathers you might ask.  The Wild Feathers are a four-piece band consisting of the following players…

  • Taylor Burns – Guitar/Vocals
  • Ricky Young – Guitar/Vocals
  • Joel King – Bass/Vocals
  • Ben Dumas – Drums

On the previous album, ‘Lonely is a Lifetime’, I felt the band had a softer classic rock feel to it and it felt like you should be partaking of a little doobage while enjoying the album.  This time around the Nashville-based group is leaning more to their country roots while still keeping a little classic rock sound. Partaking in doobage is something you have to decide if you want to do or not (“DayBreaker” might help you decide).

My Sunday Song – “Love Is On the Way” by Saigon Kick

For My Sunday Song #93 we are keeping the power ballad streak alive.  I bring you the song “Love Is On The Way” by Saigon Kick.  The song was off their 1992 album ‘The Lizard’ and garnered the band their one and only hit which reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.  I guess you could say they were a One-Hit Wonder.

The song wasn’t even really a single.  A couple radio stations in Florida picked it up and the song started to gain some traction.  Before they knew it, they had a huge hit on their hand.  I love to see songs that become popular through word-of-mouth and not being driving down your throat by the record company.

The song seems to be about the here & now.  Two people together at this point in time and going for it, living in the moment before it disappears.  At least that is what I get from the lyrics.  The song is done as purely an acoustic song.  The only drums are the tympani drums and not a full drum kit.  It is very simple in it’s content, but it is able to pull you in and you got lost in the song.  Matt Kramer’s vocals are the power behind the song along with Jason Bieler’s guitar strumming.  It was all magical.

‘Slash’ by Slash & Anthony Bozza – Book Review

As a Guns ‘N Roses fan, this book was a no-brainer when it went on sale on Amazon.  You will notice a trend on my book reviews in that I always get the books when they are on sale, dirt cheap.  Best way to buy them.  Slash has always been this larger than life Guitar God with his trademark black Top Hat, long curly hair covering his face and a cigarette sticking out of his mouth.  And of course, that is why that picture is the cover of the book.  You instantly know who it is.

The book came out in 2007 and it covers the periods of his childhood, through Guns ‘N Roses rise and fall, Slash’s Snakepit and all the way up to his band at the time Velvet Revolver.  It is a journey filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.  You get to see what influenced him in life and what drove him forward to succeed.  I would say you get everything as he lays it all out on the table.  He isn’t afraid to paint himself in a negative light either.

After reading this book, I am amazed that Slash is actually still alive.  He started doing drugs, drinking and having sex at an extremely young age.  His parental supervision was  interesting as his parents were very artsy and lived a very bohemian lifestyle.  At a young age, he was surrounded by famous people, including the late David Bowie.  He started out skateboarding and eventually discovered the Guitar and then his focus changed.  School was never important, but even less so when he started playing guitar.

The only new songs are only “Blues Won’t Leave Me Alone” and “Hellbound Train”.  I have mixed feelings on the EPs, but let’s see how they play as a full length album.

Friday New Releases – April 13th

Welcome to a pretty slow week.  Only one I am interested in this week and there aren’t a ton of others coming out.  Hopefully next week will bring us more.  However, it might be a good week to catch up on earlier releases as I am sure that is what I will be doing.  My choices are in Blue.  Let me know if there is anything you are interested in as well.

  • 81EGj2+qBCL._AC_UL115_  Breaking Benjamin – Ember – (Hollywood Records):  We thought the band was over in 2009, but it returned in 2015 although it wasn’t the original band, just the singer.  Didn’t matter, it was the singer I always liked so glad to hear some new music from him.  This time the new band was involved in the writing so hopefully will add a new layer to the band.  We will see…or hear I guess.

The Poodles – ‘Prisma’ – Album Review

Not a huge cover albums fan, I was very apprehensive on this release.  I do like cover songs, you know, maybe throwing one on an album, but not a whole album.  Cover albums can be very hit or miss. The band either interrupts the songs in to their own sound or they copy it exactly adding nothing special and that is always my fear.

The Poodles decided to do a covers album for their 7th studio album and all though I am a huge fan of the band, this worried me greatly.  But being a fan, a did give it a spin.  The good news is the band took an approach of picking songs from artist that are not in their specific genre of glam metal and they definitely achieved that goal.  The album title ‘Prisma’, I can only assume was picked to signify the songs would be looked at from different angles or viewpoints and they would add their own color to them.  And was that achieved?  Well, let’s discuss that and find out.

The opening track of the album sounds like pure, classic Poodle.  The song is “Crazy Horses” by the Osmond Brothers from 1972.  Yes, I said that right…the Osmond Brothers.  Now that is definitely going outside your genre.  The song is cranked up much heavier and would fit perfectly on any Poodles’ album.  What helps is that I am not real familiar with this song so I have no preconceived notions of what this song should sound like.  Their first choice is making me think this might be a great covers album.

RSO (Richie Sambora & Orianthi) – Making History E.P. – Album Review

Richie Sambora and Orianthi are back with their second E.P. this year.  From what I understand, they have written 70 songs together and recorded 25.  They plan on releasing them as E.P.’s so that means with 2 down (5 songs each), we have 3 more to look forward to in 2018? I hope that is the case as I am up for that. Before we get to those, we have to review the 2nd E.P., ‘Making History’.

The first E.P. ‘Rise’ was not what I expected from these two at all.  With both being exceptional guitar players, I was looking for a guitar based album and they did not come close to that on the first one.  Thank God they redeemed themselves with this album.  They brought the guitars on ‘Making History’.

With the opening track and title track “Making History” you know that they are doing what we wanted them to do.  They are rocking out.  The guitars on this one are exceptional with an almost Def Leppardesque sound from around the “Euphoria” era at times.  The guitar solo is the best thing they have done so far and it is all what I asked for so why should I complain.  Of course I have one negative on the song.  The vocals aren’t the best.  I feel the production is lacking (Bob Rock is the producer which is surprising).  Richie and Orianthi don’t sound like they are singing together and I don’t know if it is the effects they put in her vocals, but something is missing with the chemistry and the mix with the two of them singing together.

Friday New Releases – November 24th

It is Black Friday!!!  As a result, a lot of bands don’t release albums the day after Thanksgiving.  However we do have a few coming out…one studio release I might give a listen, one anniversary release, a couple live and a greatest hits (of ballads).  Hopefully there is something for you.  Have a great day and don’t shop too much!!!  My choices are highlighted in Blue.

  • 41C2rvfmQYL._AC_US218_  Queen – News of the World 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe:  The biggest release today is the 40th Anniversary Edition of News of the World.  This looks great and I would get it, but it is pretty pricey and might be out of my reach for awhile.  The album features the classics “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions” so it is a must for anyone’s collection…if you can afford it.  The Super Deluxe is $128…ouch!!  If it is streamable, I will listen to it there first.

  • 51u0IyadquL._AC_US436_QL65_  Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Who Built the Moon? – (Caroline):  Oh the Gallagher Brothers…First Liam has a new album and now Noel.  Since no more Oasis, I will take what I can get from each.  Liam’s album was surprisingly good…I hope this will be just as surprising (even with the girl playing scissors on stage) and just as good.
