Matt Nathanson – ‘Live in Paradise: Boston’ – Album Review

There is nothing better than artist that delivers a surprise and Matt Nathanson did just that.  On Wednesday of last week, he made an announcement that he was dropping a live album and you could pre-order it on vinyl or many bundles on Thursday at Noon EST.  So, I set a reminder on my calendar and when 12:00pm hit, I was on the site and the album was ordered.  And to make it even better, you were sent an email and able to download the album immediately in a digital version.  And to make it even better than better, you got a deluxe edition with another 36 tracks.  That was over 3 hours of music…hell yeah!!!  And the album would drop to the general public on Friday so I got to hear it day before everyone else (except those other fans that ordered).

The main standard album is mostly an actual show that was recorded on his 2019 tour called the “Song Wheel” Extravaganza Tour at the legendary Paradise Rock Club in his hometown of Boston, MASS.  What was really cool about this tour is that it was an acoustic show with just Matt and his friend Aaron.  And another really cool aspect is the tour included a big wheel called the Song Wheel. There were a ton of songs around the wheel and he would spin it several times during the show and let the wheel decide what song would be played next.  This is exciting because basically each show he played would be different than the show prior.  That is almost unheard of in today’s technical and choreographed lighting shows where every bit of the show is timed out to the precise moment leaving no room for improv which Matt is an utter master at doing.

My Sunday Song – “Don’t Break My Heart Again” by Whitesnake

For My Sunday Song #206, we are discussing “Don’t Break My Heart Again” by Whitesnake off their 1981 album ‘Come And Get It’.  The first single off the album and it reached #17 on the UK Charts. The album did really well in the UK hitting #2 and was their highest charting album at that time.  Sadly, still absent from the states for the most part due to contractual issues.

The song is very personal and emotional song from David Coverdale.  It is about the ending of David’s first marriage (and I think “Fool For Your Loving” is as well too). David delivers some emotional and heavy lyrics.  There is a darker overtone with the subject matter and David sounds a little heartbroken.  It is a different side of him and Whitesnake as normally they throw the “cock rock” in your fact as they do in numerous other songs on the album.

It opens with the amazing Jon Lord on his Hammond Organ.  Neil Murray’s throbbing bass is mixed in and accompanied by Ian Paice with a hard driving drum beat.  The song has that great drum beat throughout and then the guitars are added with a cool riff.  Bernie Marsden delivers the solo that fits perfectly for the vibe of the song.  It is also one of David’s finest vocal performances on this album as he puts enough emotion into his vocals to get the message across loud and clear.  It is such a stellar track.

Friday New Releases – July 24, 2020

Happy Friday everyone. It is another day for releases and hopefully something you’ve been wanting.  There isn’t a whole lot here this week, some solid metal, pop, country, r&b, comedy and two surprises that only popped up as being released this week.  And those two are the only ones I am interested in which is good as vacation is coming and some much needed time off.  Those two are in Blue.  Let me know what you are digging this week and what I have missed.  If there is nothing for you, what is something new lately that you find to be pretty dang great?  Let me know!  Have a great weekend everyone!

Kiss – ‘The Originals’ (1976) – Bonus Edition (The Kiss Review Series)

In the last two weeks, I have talked about special Kiss albums or singles in my Big Box of Vinyl and that continues one more time.  This time in my big box of vinyl there was one more special Kiss album.  Now I bring you ‘The Originals’.  This was released on July 21st, 1976 which actually turns out to be 44 years ago just two days ago!  Why didn’t I schedule this for Tuesday…who knows.  Sometimes I am stupid.

‘The Originals’, as noted on the album cover, are “the albums that touched off a Rock & Roll explosion.”  It was a special edition re-release of the albums ‘Kiss’, ‘Hotter Than Hell’ and “Dressed to Kill” in one package.  With the overwhelming success of the live album ‘Kiss Alive!’ and ‘Destroyer’, Casablanca Records wanted to take advantage of that success and re-release the albums in one glorious package.

The album comes with a 16-page history booklet, a color Kiss Army sticker, and a sheet of six trading cards.  It looks something like this…

David Coverdale – The Albums Ranked Worst to First

Starting back on August 1st, 2019, we started the David Coverdale Series of reviews.  It was a long process and after 36 reviews, we are capping off the series with not one, but two album rankings.  The first one covered only the Whitesnake albums.  The second one, this one, will cover ALL albums that David Coverdale has done.  The list are only studio albums.  No E.P.’s, no live albums and no greatest hits.

David started his career back in 1974 with Deep Purple’s Mark III lineup on the album Burn.  Through 20 studio albums that cover Deep Purple, David Coverdale solo albums, Coverdale/Page and of course, Whitesnake, there is so much music to cover in his 46 years of music.  It was so much fun tackling this David Coverdale series that part of me hates to see it end,  but all good things come to end.

Why don’t we get started and let’s see how David Coverdale albums rank from the Worst to the First.

THE WORST – WHITESNAKE: ‘THE PURPLE ALBUM” (2015):

Kiss Kompendium – The First Complete Collection

I was out vinyl digging with my two daughters and we stopped by an Antique Mall as the girls love to look at all the old antiques. I don’t argue as there are numerous booths with vinyls that I can check out and heck, you never know what else you are going to find.  The girls didn’t find anything, but I certainly did…and it wasn’t vinyl.

It was this 3″ thick book called ‘Kiss Kompendium: the First Complete Collection’.  I knew instantly what it was when I saw it…okay, I think my daughter saw it first and told me “look dad, a Kiss book”.  Yes, a Kiss book.  One I had been looking to find for quite some time and Wow!! There it was.  I immediately grabbed and carried it around the store until I could pay for it.  And let me tell you, that was a mistake.  By the time we walked up and down the rest of the aisles, my arms were jelly.  This book is not light in the very least.

What is the book you ask.  It is the complete collection of Kiss Comic Books.  Now, I don’t own a single comic book and don’t really care for them all that much. Nothing I don’t like about them other than I collect music, not comic books.  But I also collect Kiss and this fits that bill nicely.

The Original vs. The Cover – “Stop Your Sobbing”

This month’s The Original Vs. The Cover is tackling another Kink’s song.  I must be a glutton for punishment because the last time I did a Kink’s song, I was blasted by the Kink’s fans for not picking the Kink’s song.  Their fans are rabid, no doubt!!  Will I make the same mistake again…we will see shortly!

This month’s song is the Kink’s deep cut classic called “Stop Your Sobbing”.  The song is off the band’s 1964 debut album simple called “Kinks”. There are two stories about the song and it’s origin, but both similar.  The first is that Ray Davies’ girlfriend was so upset that they were becoming famous that she broke down in tears as she was worried she would lose him.  The second is that  Ray broke up with his girlfriend and she was so upset, she started crying and it pissed him off.  Either way, she lost him!!  I am sure those rabid Kinks fans will let me know the right story.

The Pretenders covered the song for their own debut album, ‘The Pretenders’, and had some decent success with it hitting the Top 40 in the UK, but only the Top 100 in the US.  The coolest thing to come out of the song was that singer, Chrissie Hynde got to meet Ray Davies as a result of them singing the song.  A budding relationship started between the two which actually led to a child.  I would say they both got a lot out of it.

Now, let’s get to the songs… Continue reading “The Original vs. The Cover – “Stop Your Sobbing””

My Sunday Song – “Take Me With You” by Whitesnake

For My Sunday Song #205, we are going after the opening track to the 1978 debut album, ‘Trouble’, with the song “Take Me With You”.  The song was written by David Coverdale and then guitarist, Micky Moody.  It opens the album with a bang and gives you a taste of what the new Coverdale project has to offer.  The album had moderate success reaching #50 in the UK, but at this point in time had no US presence.  That would change in the next decade.

Lyrically the song has a lot to be desired.  Back in the early days of Whitesnake, they had a notorious reputation of having overly sexualized lyrics that became known as “cock rock” and this is pretty good example of that. With lyrics like “Gonna spread her pretty legs so I can see, Sweet lip honey be the death of me” and “Sorry little girl, If you can’t stay, Your red light mama gonna show the way” and you get the gist of what I’m saying.  And you throw in a lot of sexual moaning at the end of the song by David and it is “cock rock” no doubt!!  David is unapologetic about it and rightfully so, this is who they are and no one is going to make them change.

You Pick It – Which Album to Review in August?

You, my reader, are going to pick an album for me to review each month.  It is really simple…first, I will give you 5 albums to choose from and second, you will tell me which one of those you would like to see reviewed on the site.  See…simple!

There are a few simple rules I have put in to place in my selections.  They are…

  • One has to be a new release (within the last month)
  • One has to be one I have never heard before (new releases don’t count for this one)
  • One has to be from a genre I don’t normally listen to at all or very often
  • And the last two are choices from my collection that I haven’t reviewed before

What are the 5 albums you ask?  Funny you should ask because I have those right here…note: I tried to throw in some non-obvious choices to make things a little more interesting.

PatTravers-CrashAndBurn  From My Collection – Pat Travers Band – ‘Crash and Burn’

220px-DYDY  From My Collection – Damn Yankees – ‘Damn Yankees’

Let me know which one you would like to see and sometime in August, I will post a review of the album that gets the most votes.  You have one week to decide and from there I will start listening to the album and do a review.

Thanks for participating!!

Friday New Releases – July 17, 2020

Happy Friday!  It is about time it got here, I need this weekend!  We have a handful of releases this week and some I am actually interested in hearing and I will highlight those in Blue as usual.  We have a variety of styles this week to choose from so hopefully there will be something for you. Let me know what you want to hear and what release I might have missed as it does happen.  Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

  • 71-GfFCjBzL._SS500_  Bush – The Kingdom – (Zuma Rock / BMG):  Gavin Rossdale and the boys are back.  Bush is hit or miss for me, but they’ve hit enough that I try out their releases and I will this one.  Here’s hoping for some solid rock this time around.

  • 71IgljhNZAL._SX522_  Pretenders – Hate for Sale – (Chrissie Hynde / BMG):  Chrissie Hynde and boys are back (that phrase sounds familiar…oh yeah…see Bush above).  I have always loved her voice and the punk/new wave style. She is a legend and that is why she will get a spin.
