Did Genesis rule the 80’s???

I was exploring the internet the other night when I came across a website that showed the Top 200 artists of the 80’s based on # of weeks on the Hot 100 chart and the # of hits they had on the chart.  I found the list to be extremely interesting and at times surprising at what did or didn’t make the list.  The website was www.rateyourmusic.com  or you can check out the list at this link.

When you go through the list, there will be no surprise at the artist at the top of the list.  It is everyone you would think it would be such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Hall & Oates, and Billy Joel (I won’t give you their ranking).  But what I found most interesting was that throughout the list I saw Genesis and most of its members or former members.

Genesis was huge in the 80’s and so was Phil Collins which is no surprise.  Mike Rutherford had a side project during the 80’s called Mike & the Mechanics that also had numerous hits during the 80’s.  And let’s not forget a former member of Genesis, Peter Gabriel.  His resurgence in the 80’s was also quite significant.  Tony Banks was the only member of the band I didn’t see having a hit on the Hot 100 list outside of Genesis.

Happy 4th of July – Is it time for another Revolution?

I am not usually political, but I feel this country is screwed no matter who gets elected.  I am not partial to Trump or Clinton.  I think they both suck!!  Since we are celebrating the birthday of our country, I thought I would do a playlist of songs about Revolution rather than going all patriotic.

Something needs to change soon or I fear the country my children are growing up in will be worse off than it is now.  Patriotism doesn’t seem to be a word in anyone’s vocabulary anymore.  Being politically correct, has gone too far in the wrong direction.  Racism seems to be at an all time high, when it should be non-existent.

If you say something nowadays that doesn’t jive with how a handful of people feel is the correct way to think, you get bashed on the internet or blasted in the media or even fired from your job.  Since when does a person’s opinion deserve that treatment.  What happened to freedom of speech.

The Dirty Clergy – Rattlesnake – Album Spotlight

The Dirty Clergy release their new album,’Rattlesnake’, today (July 1st).  They are five guys from Winfield, Alabama who have come together to deliver a solid, straight-up rock album.  ‘Rattlesnake’ is their second album and released on Happy Daze Records.

The production quality of this album is what I would call simple.  There are no extraneous, unnecessary pieces added to the production.  It is raw, gritty and has a live quality to the whole album.  You can hear the drums, the guitars, and the bass equally.  Nothing overpowers the other and makes for a great full sound.

Friday New Releases – July 1st

Not a ton of releases this Friday, but a few that could be promising.  After spending some time at the beach this week with my family, it is nice to be home and enjoy some new music.  The ones I will be checking out are in blue.

  • 51lBop9gJxL._AC_US160_  Blink-182 – California – (Viking Wizard Eyes LLC) – Blink release a new album but without Tom DeLonge, is it really a Blink album?  That is the question I am asking and I will give it a listen to see what they give us.
  • 61wuXdxmLpL._AC_US160_  Through Fire – Breathe – (Sumerian Records) – Justin McCain is back with a new band Through Fire.  Justin was the founding member of the Emphatic, of which I was a huge fan.  Basically, it is the same band with just a name change and a new record label.  High hopes for this one.
  • 61B5on+GiBL._AC_US160_  American Authors – What We Live For – (Island) – Back with their sophomore effort after the huge success of ‘Oh, What a Life’.  Can they continue that success or get sucked down by the sophomore slump?  We will have to listen and find out.
  • 519sZTyRxTL._AC_US160_  The Dirty Clergy – Rattlesnake – (Happy Daze Records) – I screwed up and had them on last week when they were only releasing a new single last week. Now the album comes out.  It has very simple productions, but some great songs on here.  A nice raw quality to the whole thing.
  • 51ZLb9CvR5L._AC_UL115_  Maxwell – black SUMMERS’ night – (Columbia)
  • 61hOvN0ygqL._AC_US160_  Fates Warning – Theories of Flight – (Inside Out Music)
  • 61h-l88ea5L._AC_US160_  Pet Shop Boys – Twenty-Something (EP) – (X2 Records)
  • 51+m1Ev8jEL._AC_US160_  Bat for Lashes – The Bride – (Warner Bros.)
  • 41gaTbLn5GL._AC_US160_  Magic! – Primary Colours – (Sony Music Entertainment)

Friday New Releases – June 24th

Thank goodness it is Friday.  What a week.  Work has been crazy so I can’t wait to listen to some new music.  Not much this week I am excited about, but there are a few I want to hear (and they are in blue).

  • 61n0bf2bvYL._AC_US160_  The Avett Brothers – True Sadness – (Republic) – Not familiar with them, but I heard the new song “Ain’t No Man” and thought it was great.  Now I want to listen to the whole thing.
  • 51SwkI3oI5L._AC_US160_  Dorothy – ROCKISDEAD – (Roc Nation) – Another band I am not familiar with but the first single is awesome and peaked my interest.  This might be my drive into work album and I will save the Avett Brothers for the drive home.

#TBT – My Favorite Albums from 2013

2013 was an interesting year for me with the music that came out.  Either I listened to an album over and over or it just didn’t get listened to but a couple times and I was done.  This list are the albums that I just couldn’t get enough of during the year.  Based on my picks this year, I would say Rock had a great year!!  Here we go:

Scott Stapp: Proof of LifeScott Stapp – “Proof of Life” – This was my album of the Year for 2013. Yes, the man from Creed delivered an album that was both very personal and very relatable.  I enjoyed this album immensely and have just devoured it since the day it came out.  I can’t say enough positive things about this album.  It had great flow from beginning to end and every song moved me in some way.  He was not afraid to talk about Jesus and his faith in this album and I applaud him for it.  It was the album I never knew he was capable of delivering.  My favorite songs were “Only One”, “Jesus is a Rockstar”, “Slow Suicide”, “New Day Coming” and “What Would Love Do”…honestly they are all awesome.  I hope he gets his act together and releases more music.  Give this one a listen!!!

Def Leppard – “Man Enough” – New Video

Def Leppard premiered their new video today for “Man Enough”.  Can’t get enough of this band!!  This is the 3rd single off their latest self-titled release.  Check it Out.

P.M. Dawn singer, Attrell Cordes, died June 17th.

I guess I have been living under a rock this last week because I completely missed the news on the passing of Attrell Cordes, better known as Prince Be from P.M. Dawn.  He was only 46 and died of kidney failure.  I hate that I am already updating my In Memoriam playlist from just over a week ago.  In his memory, I am posting my 3 favorite songs from P.M. Dawn and probably their most famous songs – “I’d Die Without You”, “Looking Through Patient Eyes” and “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss”.

Rest in Peace Mr. Cordes!

Hellyeah – Unden!able – Album Review

Hellyeah’s fifth studio album is ‘Unden!able’ and it is undeniably fantastic (sorry, had to do it).  It is the best album they have done to date.  It is heavy, hard and pounding but melodic at the same time.

I have had the album for 2 weeks now and have really spent a lot of time absorbing it’s greatness.  It is funny how the older I get, the heavier I tend to like it (there are so many ways you could take that).  When I was younger, I wouldn’t have given them a listen, but now I can’t get enough.

The album opens with the intro “!” and slowly builds to the hard-driving song “X”.  The song will get your blood flowing with the pounding Vinnie Paul drums and Chad Gray’s vocals.  He is in top form with his gravelly, semi-screaming vocals.  He sings with such power and intensity throughout this album.

Robbie Williams – The Top 20 Songs

Robbie Williams is one of the most talented singer/songwriters out there and is so extremely underrated in the states.  He had a few minor hits early on in the states, but for some reason, never caught on.  The rest of the world seems to adore this man as he has sold over 75 million records over his career.

Robbie was a member of the British boy band Take That in the early 90’s before branching out on a solo career and releasing his first solo album in 1997.  It is that solo career where I became a fan and have been since.  He is one of the few artist that will release an album and I will buy it without hearing anything on it beforehand.  I don’t think I have been disappointed yet.

I am going to give you my Top 20 favorite songs by Robbie Williams.  This was actually really hard to narrow it down to 20.  I eventually narrowed it down to 24 songs and then I had to re-listen to everything again to get it down to the Top 20. I hope you give him a listen and become a fan, if you are not already.
