Welcome to December, the final month of this miserable 2020. Ok, that is the pessimist in me, but the optimist has enjoyed working from home and being with my family more. I’ve also enjoyed a lot of music and today there is A LOT!! We have over 20 albums for you to check out. I have a few I will listen to and those are highlighted in Blue. I think we have only 2 more Friday New Releases and then it will be quiet for about 3 weeks or more before new releases start picking back up. So, with that in mind, grab as much as you can. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend.
Hollywood Undead – New Empire, Vol. 2 – (BMG): Volume 1 came out earlier this year and these guys killed it yet again. I really dig their sound which if you don’t know is a metalcore sound that mixes hip hop and heavy metal. I am usually not a huge fan of that genre, but I like these guys and I haven’t missed a beat with them. Looking forward to this one.
Shawn Mendes – Wonder – (Island Records): Okay, I will admit, I’m not completely over the moon for this one but my girls like this kid and I have to admit also that some of it isn’t half bad for radio pop music. My daughter says for her 16th birthday she wants to meet him so Shawn, you have 3 years to get the restraining order.
It is time for the Top 20 Songs of 2018. My previous post, if you missed it, was the Top 20 Rock Songs of 2018. Go check it out by clicking on the link. These 20 songs are all genres other than rock. Some were popular and chart toppers and others were not. They are my favorites, that touched me in some way so don’t expect any indie bands or anything trendy. If you want that go to one of the cool sites out there, this ain’t it.
#20 – “Space Cowboy” – Kacey Musgrave off the album ‘Golden Hour’: I am not huge into today’s country music, but Kacey is different. She is doing things her way, pushing boundaries and sounds. I love her voice and her songs are always interesting and worth diving into lyrically. This one is no different. It is more pop than country, but still good.
#19 – “Say Hello” – Rhett Walker Band off the ‘Rhett Walker Band E.P.’: Rhett’s a Christian rock band and this song comes off with the power of Church Revival and gets you up out of you chair, hands in the air and give it your all. If you want to get moving, this will do it.
The year is almost over so it is time to look back at what was awesome in music during the year. I have already looked back at the Top Rock Albums of 2018 (click to read). This list will cover all other genres that I listened to over the year including Pop, Country, Christian and whatever other genre you want classify these albums. Rock is my favorite genre and that is why it gets it’s own list, but that doesn’t take away from any of these choices as I think they are great on their own.
Note: These albums were my favorites and not necessarily the most played on the radio (which I hate the radio) or even the biggest sellers. There aren’t the trendy indie bands on everyone else’s top albums list. These are just what I came across during the year and connected with me in some way. So, we might as well get started…
The #1 Album of 2018
Matt Nathanson – Sings His Sad Heart: Man, what can I say about this guy. He is my favorite singer/songwriter out their right now and has been for sometime. Within just a couple listens to this album I felt like I knew all the words and I was singing right along like I had grown up with these songs. And how do you know an album is great, you keep singing it when you aren’t even listening to it. Yes, I was and I am still singing. The songs “Mine”, “Way Way Back”, “Used To Be” “Long Distant Runner” and “Best Drugs” are some of my favorites but there is not a bad song. Perfect!!
Welcome to the last Friday of May. Work is really busy right now and I need something to take my mind off of it. Thank goodness it is Memorial Day Weekend and we get Monday off. I need it. There are several releases I will be checking out this weekend and they are highlighted in Blue. Let me know what you will be getting or whatever might peak your interest. Have a great weekend!!
Shawn Mendes – Shawn Mendes – (Island Records): Shawn Mendes will be played constantly in my house this weekend and for weeks to come as I have two daughters who love him, one daughter a little too much…I swear a restraining order is in her future. Anyway, I have heard a couple songs and I have to say that “In My Blood” is a rather spectacular song. If there are any more like this one on the album, it will probably be great.
Hoobastank – Push Pull – (Napalm Records): Here is a name I haven’t heard in years. Six years to be exact. It has been that long since their last album and honestly I haven’t followed them in quite a long time. No better time then the present to revisit the band. Haven’t heard anything yet so it will be interesting to see what they still have to offer.

#20 – “Something Just Like This” by the Chainsmokers featuring Coldplay off the album ‘Memories…Do Not Open’: This song was a family favorite during the year. The one song the wife liked as well as all the kids and as a result, I heard it a lot and it grew on me to where I stopped and listened to it when it came on the radio. A catchy little song with a great beat.
It is time for the Top 20 Songs of 2016. My previous post, if you missed it, was the Top 20 Rock Songs of 2016. Go check it out by clicking on the link. These 20 songs are all other genres other than rock. Some were popular and chart toppers and others were not. They are my favorites, that touched me in some way.
20. “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars off the album ’24K Magic’: Ok, I love this song. There is something about Bruno that I enjoy. It is what you come to expect from Bruno and that isn’t a bad thing. Very catchy and makes you want to dance.
To my surprise, there were actually some albums that were released today…two days before Christmas. I pulled up Apple Music to see if there was anything and sure enough, there was. In case you are interested for some last minute gifts, here are the handful of releases worth mentioning. There are a couple (highlighted in Blue) that I will give a listen. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you all!!!
Nine Inch Nails – Not the Actual Events E.P. – (The Null Corporation): NIN is back with a 5 song E.P. just in time for Christmas. I am not a huge fan, but there stuff is interesting enough to at least give one spin.

The #1 Album of 2016
Lady Gaga – Joanne (Interscope Records): This was an easy pick for me. The album was such a pleasant surprise and a departure from her last album. It had a little bit of everything from Pop to Country to Rock to Folk. It was such a great mixture of songs that gave us one cohesive album. The title track, “John Wayne”, “A Million Reasons” and “Perfect Illusion” were all great songs. Even the Deluxe Edition was great with “Grigio Girls”. All around classic album for Lady Gaga. Check out my review here.
Happy Friday!! We made it through another week. Now let’s enjoy the weekend with some great new music. There is so much to choose from this weekend and some I can’t wait to grab a hold of and sonically consume. Let me know what your interested in, and as always, my most anticipated ones are highlighted in Blue. There are a lot so I am only going to comment on four of them, the others Bruce Springsteen and Joe Bonamassa are just too obvious choices that I am sure a lot of you are interested in as well.
Airbourne – Breakin’ Outta Hell – (Spinefarm): Are you ready to rock 80’s style? Then turn that volume up and rock your ass off with Airbourne. One of the most exciting retro rock bands to come out in the last 10 years. Listen to the title track and then go get this album and turn to 11.
My 9 year old daughter was upset that my 12 year old daughter (at the time) got a vinyl album and she didn’t get one. She kept asking me when she was going to get an album. She then when on to say that she wants the Shawn Mendes album.
I should have guessed as several weeks earlier, she was looking through one of her sister’s magazines and inside was a poster of Shawn Mendes and she went crazy. She unfolded it and started kissing it!!! It was so cute, but scary for me as well since now I realize she knows what boys are and that you kiss them! As I was laughing at the sight of her kissing the poster on the outside, I was screaming on the inside.
Lo and behold, we were at the mall last weekend and what did we come across…Shawn Mendes’ album ‘Handwritten’. I surprised her and told her I would buy it for her. She was so excited.
I wanted to write this to document for her, the very first vinyl record she would own. The cool part of it is the fact that it was a special edition Blue Vinyl. It looks really cool and you can actually see through the album. There is a mini poster of him inside, but I told her it need to stay in the album so it didn’t get messed up. The other reason was I didn’t want her kissing all over it.
