On August 3rd, 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, ‘Hysteria’. Little did they know this ground breaking album would go on to sell over 25 million records, produce 7 hit singles and go to #1 on the Billboard Charts. The final single from ‘Hysteria’ was “Rocket”. It was the 7th single…wow. “Rocket” was released in the UK on January 30, 1989 and went to #15. In the U.S>, it was released in March 1989 where it went to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 so it was yet another successful single.
My version is the U.S. version from the ‘Hysteria’ Singles Boxset and has the B-Side as “Women (Live)” while the UK version’s B-Side was “Release Me” which we saw a couple singles as the B-Side for the U.S. version of “Armageddon It”. Another song (like all the songs on the album) credited to the entire band as well as Mutt Lange the producer.

If you thought “Women” sounded different hold on to your hat. The song was inspired by “Burundi Black” by Burundi Steiphenson Black which had inspired the likes of Bow Wow Wow and Adam and the Ants. What started out as basically an instrumental turned in to a celebration of all the band’s influences from David Bowie, to Elton John, to T Rex, to The Stones and even Lou Reed. Lines from the song constantly referenced lines from or titles of songs from the 70’s. I loved trying to pick them out.
A SIDE:

The song was full of loops and samples and even had sounds from NASA’s Apollo 11 moon landing. This had even more synths, so many sounds coming at you from every angle. It had a lot of electronic elements and this was not the same hard rock band we were used to hearing. The vocals were stacked upon stacked upon stacked which gave us great harmonies and great background vocals. Def Leppard was pushing the boundaries of what is rock and people were eating it up. The single version is called the “Lunar Mix” and cuts a lot of the instrumental break out and a lot of the really cool parts, but they needed a trimmed down version radio and it still has its moments. This song might have turned a lot of people off, but I liked the variety it offers.
B SIDE:

The B-Side is a live version of the song “Women” and this one was taken straight from the live show that became ‘In Your Face, In the Round’ live concert that was on VHS. It was recorded either February 12th or 13th (since both dates were recorded) at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. And this song rocks. I think live the song has a lot more to offer than the studio version. They stick to the studio version, but live it has a lot more ooomph! A lot less production sometimes is a good thing.
RECREATE ALBUM COVER:
Now, I actually had all the 7″ Singles at one time, but I was always missing the final two puzzle pieces. So, when the band released the Hysteria Singles Box Set, I was finally album to finish the puzzle of the Hysteria Cover art. We will create this picture as we go trough the singles. First up…”Animal”…then “Woman”…”Pour Some Sugar On Me”…“Hysteria”…“Armageddon It”…“Love Bites”…and last but not least…”Rocket”…as well as the final two pieces of the puzzle which were found in the “Love Bites” 12″ Single release. I never found them in the 7″ singles but they might have been there too…First let’s see it with just “Rocket” added…

And now with the final two puzzle pieces. The actual pieces that were released back in the day didn’t have the song titles on them, but the did say Def Leppard…

And that is it for the singles from ‘Hysteria’. I know it was a lot, but I really wanted to go through them all…back to the reviews.

Aww man it looks great. I remember buying 🚀 on the walk to school one morning and we played Please Release Me in the music room on the record player during music class. Teacher was not amused

Ha! That is awesome. It is not the best song, but it has its charm. I don’t know why your teacher didn’t hear that!!

I am sure I had the E..P. at one time. I need to get it again. I love this song and all the 70’s glam references. All of their influences in one song.

I bought this one for the Women live version. Which these singles came with the lyrics to attached to it? I had that one also. I cannot remember now…..

I do not remember which one had the lyrics. I don’t remember. I do remember having them all on cassette single or CD single though.

I skipped a bunch of these but I bought one as there was a booklet that had the lyrics for Hysteria included which I thought was genius. Wish I had kept the damn thing

Too bad you didn’t. But I don’t have anything from back then either.

Thanks. The Hysteria Singles Box Set thankfully gives the full picture. So anyone can have them all.

I am somewhat in the mind that “Hysterica” was Def Leopard’s last great album.

That is probably true. I do like Slang a lot though.

I quickly got sick of “Rocket,” but I somewhat don’t mind when they play it live. It depends on my mood. The lyrics are cool, though! The big album cover looks amazing, bravo!
