Def Leppard – ‘Live in Mountain View: August 17, 1988’ – Bootleg DVD (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

With Bootlegs, you never know what you are going to get and that is especially true with concert DVDs. In my search for anything Def Leppard, I came across this live DVD of Def Leppard from their ‘Hysteria Tour’. The show was recorded on August 17, 1988 at the Shoreline Amphitheater just outside of Mountain View, California. The show was recorded using either a still shot of the video screen or the actual footage used for the venue video screens themselves. And the video quality is supposed to be great, along with the sound.

The show itself is the typical ‘Hysteria Tour’ show you would expect from the guys. By this time they were already basically ignoring anything from ‘On Through the Night’ and ‘High & Dry’ except for one song. The set list consisted of only one track from ‘High & Dry’, it included 7 from ‘Pyromania’ and 6 from ‘Hysteria’. No covers, nothing. 14 tracks and a little over an hour and a half long in length.

Earlier, I said the picture quality was supposed to be great, but that was not the case for this copy I have on DVD. I am sure this recorded off a copy of a VHS tape that was recorded of a copy of another VHS tape and another VHS tape and so on and so on. The quality at times is unwatchable especially when the stage is dark. If the stage is all lit up, the picture looks decent considering this is VHS technology on a DVD. However, the sound is spot on through out. Clear and you can hear everybody. This would’ve been better as a CD only concert bootleg in my opinion.

When you compare this set list to their famous live release, ‘In the Round, In Your Face’, it is an identical set list with one exception. In the encore you get an extra song with the band doing “Love Bites”. Otherwise, everything is pretty identical. The other show was recorded 5 months earlier in February 1988.

I saw this tour a lot. I think I caught three shows on it so everything about this video was familiar even if it has been 35 years since the tour. The show kicks off with the typical Dirty Harry/Excitable intro before going in to one of their best openers ‘Stagefright’ since it starts with “I Said Welcome to My Show”. The rip through a couple songs and then Steve Clark does his solo which honestly, is a little sloppy and not overly impressive. They then do the lethal combo of “Gods of War” and “Die Hard the Hunter”.

One of my favorite parts of the show was the somewhat acoustic portion of “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” and then full on electric. They kick through some more Lep classics and then Phil gets his solo which I like better than Steve’s. Then the worst part of the show is “Rock of Ages”. It is extended out too damn long and then they get the crowd involved with a singalong. I swear, I didn’t think it was ever going to end. Awful…simply awful. The show ends with two encores including “Love Bites” and “Photograph” which they should always end their shows with that one in my opinion. And that is it. I’ll go in to more detail on the actual Live release from the band.

If you find yourself out and about and see this Bootleg DVD, you can skip it as far as video watching quality goes. If you want it only to have another show on this tour that you can listen to, then grab a copy as the sound quality is really great. Keep in mind, this is an untouched, very raw live show and Joe Elliott and the band don’t always sound perfect. They are a little rough around the edges for sure. But it is a purely live show and that makes it cool in my book. No touch-ups is a good thing. For this particular release of the concert, My Overall Score is only a 2.0 out of 5.0 Stars. I gave it a 2 because the sound is good. Video quality is more like a 1 or even less possibly. Not the best disc in my colleciton.

  1. Agreed about the acoustic portion on Heartbreak. Did you know the story about why they did that?

They were so sick of that song, tour after tour gig after gig, that they needed to change the arrangement or they’d be so sick of it, they’d have to drop the track!

  2. That makes sense to me. There are bands I’ve seen a number of times. I can say that there are songs from their early days I wish they’d drop from their set lists. I want deep cuts instead.

    Nice find.

      1. Yes, yes we do.

FYI, I just read that Pyromania will have a 40th anniversary super deluxe release on April 26th. I’m guessing you knew this already. I just ordered the 4-CD / Blu-ray box.

  3. Best thing about this review is you caught them three times on this tour at there peak. There’s something to be said about that when you catch a band at that moment in that time period.

  4. That’s cool that the sound is good, sucks about the video portion. I’ve run across some really crappy video bootlegs before, enough that I tend to stay away from them now unless I can see it before buying. I can handle listening to whatever as long as it’s passable quality, but video for me is a no-go if it sucks.

  5. They just had to keep the worst song from ‘High ‘n’ Dry’ in their setlist, geez! Ok it’s not the worst song from that album, but I’m just so sick of it. I didn’t think it was that great to begin with. I don’t mind Steve’s solo actually. He wasn’t a technical player to begin with and that was part of his charm! Sloppy, yes, but I loved every minute of it! I’ve seen this bootleg on YouTube at least three times and the only way I was able to stay awake during the “Rock of Ages” sing along nonsense was by tapping along to Rick’s drum pattern.

      1. Well, everyone hears things differently lol. Don’t know why the band stopped playing the acoustic version of “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.” I get that Steve isn’t alive anymore, but Vivian could give it a go. Correct me, if I’m wrong about them not doing the acoustic version since the Hysteria tour. I would feel guilty for fast forwarding part of a show; that’s why I just deal with the boring parts.
