In 2018, Def Leppard issued a new Greatest Hits compilation called ‘The Story So Far..The Best of’. It was released on CD and Vinyl and if you got the vinyl set, you received a 7″ Single for their cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus”. It is the only way to get that single, that I am aware. And what a strange cover and unexpected surprise from the band. Who would’ve thought they would cover Depeche Mode.

According to Phil Collen in an article in Rolling Stone magazine by Sarah Grant…
“Depeche Mode [started out] really poppy like a lot of bands that disappeared, then all of a sudden they started doing things like ‘Personal Jesus’ – and it was like ‘woah’ … It has an element of cool that was different from the earlier Depeche Mode stuff,” Collen said. “I found it really inspiring how this article that said Depeche Mode sold out more than Bieber or Taylor Swift,” Collen said. “We [felt] a tear of pride and joy for them – the fact that they carried on, never stopped … and it’s sort of the way we see ourselves.”
A-SIDE:

The A-Side is “Personal Jesus” is a cover of the Depeche Mode classic and they do a good job. The Lepped it up, but kept the electronic feel to it as well. The song does have a pretty cool groove to it and Leppard captures that. But with Phil’s guitar being a little bluesy, it gives it a different vibe then the original. I do feel they could have rocked it up a little more, but still impressed and I like it. For the collector, well worth adding to the collection.
B-SIDE:

The 2nd new song for the greatest hits comp and the B-Side is the Christmas song written by Rick Savage called “We All Need Christmas”. Yes, but do we need another Christmas song? No, not really. Not a fan of this song yet, but maybe it will become a Christmas classic one day…yeah…maybe not. There a million Christmas songs and this doesn’t bring anything new to the table. There is a nice string arrangement, but the song is more lullaby then pop song. It drones on a little and doesn’t give us anything nostalic-like to grab hold to so it falls flat. A good effort though. I get it. A Christmas song that becomes a hits reaps rewards for years to come, just ask Mariah Carey.
And there you have it. A cool piece in the collection that you might know about until you bought the vinyl for ‘The Story So Far…The Best of Def Leppard’. Maybe now, you will go out and but it! If so, tell Def Leppard they owe me!! Thanks for hanging around.

I never listen to this. I hated Personal Jesus when Johnny Cash covered it, so there was no way Def Lep were going to turn me onto it.

I actually don’t hate this cover. I thought it was not bad because of the bass line.
