Friday New Releases – June 10th

Another great Friday of releases.  The one I am most excited about is Scorpion Child.  I hope there is something that gets your blood pumping.  The ones in blue are the ones I will be listening to over the next couple of days.

  • 81TAzHEbwwL._SX450_  Scorpion Child – Acid Roulette – (Nuclear Blast America) – They are back and I couldn’t be happier.  Their self-titled first album was a masterpiece. They have a classic rock sound with a modern edge.  I can’t get enough of new bands that have that retro sound.  This will be the first album I listen to in the car on the way to work.

Music Challenge #3 – Catfish and the Bottlemen – The Ride

It is time for another music challenge.  Go and listen to an album that you have heard nothing about and pick it solely based on the band name, album name or album cover.

This time around I went off Band Name and Album cover.  The band was Catfish and the Bottlemen and the album cover was a drawing of an alligator biting his tail.  My first thought based on this information was that this band must be a country band with some major redneck roots (and I mean that in a good way).

Well, that was not the case.  Catfish and the Bottlemen are a four-piece band from the UK and their sound was not country at all.  They remind me more of an indie type band so they could be categorized as an alternative band.  The Ride is the band’s second album and follow-up to their album The Balcony.  I think I will check that album out as well.

On my first listen of The Ride, I did not like the album overall.  However, there were 3 standout songs on that first run through and they remained my standouts the more I listened.  The songs were “Postpone”, “Oxygen” and “Red”.

Friday New Releases – June 3rd

Finally a Friday of new releases to get excited about. The last couple of weeks haven’t given me much that I enjoy.  I hope there is something that excites you.  The ones that I will be listening to first and probably the most are highlighted in blue.

  • 51jx+u86hkL._AC_US160_  Train – Does Led Zepplin II – (Crush Music) – Train is one of my favorite bands and I am anxious to listen to their take on Led Zeppelin II.  The great thing about this album is all proceeds go to charity.  The charity is Family House, which offers temporary lodging for families of ill children being treated at a hospital in San Francisco, the band’s hometown.  If you want to see what else I like by Train check it this post.

Friday New Releases – May 27th

It has been an incredibly busy week and I am looking forward to some new music.  Friday’s new releases have some good choices to try.  See if there is anything that excites you.  My top choices are highlighted in Blue.

  • 61E-SCkAK2L._AA160_  Paul Gilbert – I Can Destroy – (Pronghorn) – The former lead guitarist for Racer X and the Mr. Big lead guitarist releases his latest solo album I Can Destroy. The first 2 songs I have heard rock out hard and his guitar work is amazing.

Friday New Releases – May 20th

Another week and a ton of new releases.  I will never be able to listen to them all, but there are several I am looking forward to giving a spin.  I will bold in blue the ones I will definitely be listening to over the next week.

  • url  Sick Puppies – Fury – I have been a fan of Sick Puppies since their album Dressed Up As Life.  They have put out some great hard rock albums.  I am not sure what we will get with this album as they have a new lead singer.  That is usually not a good sign and most of the time the magic is gone and the bands can fade away.  I will give it a listen and try to keep an open mind.

Thirdstory – Searching EP

When I took my daughter to see Tori Kelly (check out review here), the opening act was Thirdstory.  I would describe them as 3 guys, who can harmonize, whose voices will surprise (hey – that rhymes!).  They have such a smooth sound and are amazing live.

We walked out of after the show commenting on how great they sounded.  Listening to a band live tells you how good they really are and these guys can sing. Their harmonies were amazing and the notes they can hit gave me chills.  On a side note, their tour drummer was a monster.  He added so much to their sound and made it that much more enjoyable for me.

The band consists of Elliott Skinner, Richard Saunders and Ben Lusher and they currently live in New York.  Yesterday, they released a 3 song EP called Searching (The Verve Music Group).  I only knew about it because my daughter texted me while I was at work telling me that it was out and I should listen to it.  She even supplied a link.  Well, I did that on the way home.

After four consecutive listens in a row, I knew that these guys might be on to something special.  If you just want to listen to good music with great stories and great vocals, then check it out.

Track List

“Searching for a Feeling” – A nice introduction to the band and what to expect from their sound.  Just solid, smooth vocals and heartfelt songs.

“G Train” – My favorite of the 3. If I remember from the concert, this one is about their life in New York.  This one sounded awesome live. You can tell this song means a lot to the band.

“Grows Old” – This is a slow song and towards the end builds up to a sonic boom of vocal harmonies that take this song over the top (at least it felt that way in the car with the volume turned way up).

Their full album drops in the Fall and is produced by Frank Ocean & Zayn (yes, the former One Direction star).  I will be picking the album up when it comes out.  Check them out on Facebook and Twitter.

Friday New Releases – May 13th

There are a ton of new releases today.  But most of them I am just so, so about.  Hopefully there are some on here you like and maybe some you might try just for fun.

These are the ones I am interested in listening to either because I am a fan or just out of curiosity.  However, since there are so many it could be a long while before I get around to hearing some of these.  I will bold in blue the ones I will definitely be listening to over the next week.

  • Meghan-Trainor-Thank-You-album-cover  Meghan Trainor – Thank You – (Epic) – My kids like listening to her and her first single “No” was actually kind of catchy.  Idoubt there is anythign on here that my kids can’t listen to but I will listen to it anyway just to make sure.

Radiohead – New Album May 8th @ 2pm

Just announced this morning, Radiohead is releasing a new album on XL Records this Sunday, May 8th at 2pm.  The Sunday release will be digital only, the CD will be out June 17th.  This is their first release since 2011’s The King of Limbs. So excited for new music from them.  Their is no album title yet.

A new song “Burn the Witch” was just released on Wednesday.  Today, they also released a video for a new song, “Daydreaming”.  What a nice way to end the week.  Check them out below.

It might make a great Mother’s Day gift for that special lady in your life.  My wife won’t want it, so I will just keep it for myself!!

Justin Timberlake – “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

I was so glad to see some new music from Justin Timberlake.  Does he ever do a bad song?  I don’t think he does.  Check out his new single that was released today.

Friday New Releases – May 6th

Friday’s releases this week don’t have me overly excited, but still some possible good albums to enjoy.  At least this week is rather diverse in what I am interested to hear.  There is a little country, pop, alternative and some rock.  If there is anything that you are are excited to hear, let me know.

Keith Urban – Ripcord (Capitol Nashville)

Keith always is very consistent and usually a few good songs worth keeping.
