Switchfoot – “If the House Burns Down Tonight”

Here is my 2nd song I was going to share from their new album “Where the Light Shines Through”.  I am only sharing this one because it is my new FAVORITE song.  I heard it and was instantly in love with this song.

It starts out with slow burn and then is a blazing fire of rock.  It spoke to me because as I was listening to the lyrics, I immediately thought that if my house did burn down, I would be okay with it as long as my beautiful wife and kids were by my side.  They are all that matters to me.  None of my personal belongings matter and they aren’t going to remember me when I am gone.

I think people lose sight of that and think they must have the latest and greatest and most expensive item because they feel it defines them, but it is your family, friends and who you are to them that defines you.  I am proud to be a husband to my wife and a father to my kids and friend to my friends.

Switchfoot – “Looking For America (feat. Lecrae)”

The new Switchfoot album,’Where the Light Shines Through’, is incredible and there were 2 songs that really spoke to me that I have to share.  The first one is “Looking for America (Feat. Lecrae)”.  The second one I will post tomorrow.

“Looking for America” is so timely for the tragic events of this week.  First the tragic killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling by the police and then last night’s equally tragic killings of 5 police officers in Dallas, Tx.  Words can not express how I feel about these events and I feel this great country is losing itself.  When I heard this song, I pushed repeat and continued listening to it the whole drive home from work.

I know the song isn’t about the killings this past week, but about America’s problems overall.  However, it is seems so relevant for what is currently going on that I felt I needed to share.

Friday New Releases – June 8th

I don’t have a long list of releases, but there are some I have been waiting on for awhile like Chevelle and Switchfoot.  Plus a few more that I can’t wait to hear which are all listed in Blue.

  • 51N-+Um45UL._AC_US160_  Chevelle – The North Corridor – (Epic):  It has been 2 years since their last release, so I am excited for some new music from these guys.  The songs I have heard so far, have been great.  I hope the rest of the album is as well.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: Runnin’ Down a Dream (2008 – Documentary)

On July 4th, I wasn’t feeling well and decided to sit and watch the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers documentary called Runnin’ Down a Dream that is now streaming on Netflix.  I figured I might as well watch one of America’s greatest rock bands ever on our country’s birthday.

The film is by Director Peter Bogdanovich and released in 2008 by Warner Brothers.  When it was originally released it was as a 4 disc box set with the first 2 DVD disc being the movie, the third DVD disc was the 30th Anniversary concert and the fourth disc was a CD of rare tracks.  I just might pick this up if I see it when I am out.

Now be warned, if you plan to watch make sure you have 4 hours available because once you start there is no stopping.  The 4 hours flies by as this documentary is so entertaining mixed with great interviews and great footage of the band’s history. Any fan of Tom Petty should check it out as you will not be disappointed.

Car Ride – Summer Playlist

I took last week off from work to spend time with my family.  I always look forward to time off and the memories we will make during that time off.  Whenever we go on a car trip, we always put together a playlist for the car ride.  This playlist was 49 songs (why we didn’t round up to 50, I do not know) and was 2 hours and 59 minutes long.  Which was perfect for our 3 hour car ride to the beach.

Most of the songs are songs my kids really like and are very popular on the radio. However, I did throw in a couple of my current favorites without their knowledge.  It was funny listening to them go, “What is this song?  Skip it!!”.  Of course, I said no.  I threw on a song off Candlebox’s new album and one from The Defiants.

I thought I would shorten the list to a manageable playlist and let you get a taste for what my kids are enjoying right now.  I have to admit, a lot of these I am enjoying right now as well.

Did Genesis rule the 80’s???

I was exploring the internet the other night when I came across a website that showed the Top 200 artists of the 80’s based on # of weeks on the Hot 100 chart and the # of hits they had on the chart.  I found the list to be extremely interesting and at times surprising at what did or didn’t make the list.  The website was www.rateyourmusic.com  or you can check out the list at this link.

When you go through the list, there will be no surprise at the artist at the top of the list.  It is everyone you would think it would be such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Hall & Oates, and Billy Joel (I won’t give you their ranking).  But what I found most interesting was that throughout the list I saw Genesis and most of its members or former members.

Genesis was huge in the 80’s and so was Phil Collins which is no surprise.  Mike Rutherford had a side project during the 80’s called Mike & the Mechanics that also had numerous hits during the 80’s.  And let’s not forget a former member of Genesis, Peter Gabriel.  His resurgence in the 80’s was also quite significant.  Tony Banks was the only member of the band I didn’t see having a hit on the Hot 100 list outside of Genesis.

Happy 4th of July – Is it time for another Revolution?

I am not usually political, but I feel this country is screwed no matter who gets elected.  I am not partial to Trump or Clinton.  I think they both suck!!  Since we are celebrating the birthday of our country, I thought I would do a playlist of songs about Revolution rather than going all patriotic.

Something needs to change soon or I fear the country my children are growing up in will be worse off than it is now.  Patriotism doesn’t seem to be a word in anyone’s vocabulary anymore.  Being politically correct, has gone too far in the wrong direction.  Racism seems to be at an all time high, when it should be non-existent.

If you say something nowadays that doesn’t jive with how a handful of people feel is the correct way to think, you get bashed on the internet or blasted in the media or even fired from your job.  Since when does a person’s opinion deserve that treatment.  What happened to freedom of speech.

The Dirty Clergy – Rattlesnake – Album Spotlight

The Dirty Clergy release their new album,’Rattlesnake’, today (July 1st).  They are five guys from Winfield, Alabama who have come together to deliver a solid, straight-up rock album.  ‘Rattlesnake’ is their second album and released on Happy Daze Records.

The production quality of this album is what I would call simple.  There are no extraneous, unnecessary pieces added to the production.  It is raw, gritty and has a live quality to the whole album.  You can hear the drums, the guitars, and the bass equally.  Nothing overpowers the other and makes for a great full sound.

Friday New Releases – July 1st

Not a ton of releases this Friday, but a few that could be promising.  After spending some time at the beach this week with my family, it is nice to be home and enjoy some new music.  The ones I will be checking out are in blue.

  • 51lBop9gJxL._AC_US160_  Blink-182 – California – (Viking Wizard Eyes LLC) – Blink release a new album but without Tom DeLonge, is it really a Blink album?  That is the question I am asking and I will give it a listen to see what they give us.
  • 61wuXdxmLpL._AC_US160_  Through Fire – Breathe – (Sumerian Records) – Justin McCain is back with a new band Through Fire.  Justin was the founding member of the Emphatic, of which I was a huge fan.  Basically, it is the same band with just a name change and a new record label.  High hopes for this one.
  • 61B5on+GiBL._AC_US160_  American Authors – What We Live For – (Island) – Back with their sophomore effort after the huge success of ‘Oh, What a Life’.  Can they continue that success or get sucked down by the sophomore slump?  We will have to listen and find out.
  • 519sZTyRxTL._AC_US160_  The Dirty Clergy – Rattlesnake – (Happy Daze Records) – I screwed up and had them on last week when they were only releasing a new single last week. Now the album comes out.  It has very simple productions, but some great songs on here.  A nice raw quality to the whole thing.
  • 51ZLb9CvR5L._AC_UL115_  Maxwell – black SUMMERS’ night – (Columbia)
  • 61hOvN0ygqL._AC_US160_  Fates Warning – Theories of Flight – (Inside Out Music)
  • 61h-l88ea5L._AC_US160_  Pet Shop Boys – Twenty-Something (EP) – (X2 Records)
  • 51+m1Ev8jEL._AC_US160_  Bat for Lashes – The Bride – (Warner Bros.)
  • 41gaTbLn5GL._AC_US160_  Magic! – Primary Colours – (Sony Music Entertainment)
