On August 3rd, 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, ‘Hysteria’.  Little did they know this ground breaking album would go on to sell over 25 million records, produce 7 hit singles and go to #1 on the Billboard Charts. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” is the band’s third single in the UK released on September 8, 1987. Here in the States, it was actually the fourth single released on April 16, 1988. The song would change the course of this album for the band and see their popularity rise to heights they had never seen before. The song was written by the band and producer Mutt Lange.

It was do or die time for the band. The album had been a hit and sold over 3 million copies before this song came on, but the album cost so much to make, that the band still hadn’t broken even. They needed to sell way more. They recorded a video with live footage for the song and when it hit MTV, the album started skyrocketing up the charts and selling millions of records. The song never made it to #1 as it peaked at #2 as Richard Marx’s song “Hold On To The Night” kept it from the top of the charts, but there was no denying this was their biggest hit every and their signature song.

Yes, the song is about sex, but it is it the energy of the song that make this one so good. The song was one of the last ones to be recorded as Mutt still didn’t feel they had that one massive song that was needed. There were to intros recorded for the song. The first had the opening line on the song as “Step inside, walk this way, you and me babe, hey hey!” while the single version opened with “Love is a like a Bomb”, and since this is the Single version that is what this one opened with and it is great. The B-Side for this album is another fantastic track with “Ring of Fire”.

A SIDE:

As I said above, the song opens with Joe singing “Love is Like A Bomb” and then the song kicks in although it doesn’t flow as naturally as the original mix. The video version has it echo out longer and sounds better. Joe goes in to that first verse in almost a rap like style as he spits out line by line. The chorus though is the real driving force as it is so contagious. It is anthemic, fist raising, arm pumping and just what they hell do they mean with those lyrics. No one cared as it all sounded so good. There is a little instrumental break then more semi-rapping before more of that bombastic chorus. The people loved it and the live crowds devoured it. It has become the band’s most recognizable song and a favorite of millions.

A fun fact, in 2012, the band re-recorded the song due to royalty conflicts with the label for online sales. They only did a couple songs, but Taylor Swift would go on to do entire albums for some of those same reasons, but Leppard did it first!! (Maybe not really first, but definitely before her).

B SIDE:

The B-Side is one of my favorite Leppard B-Sides with “Ring of Fire”. The song explores those feelings of love that are so intense that it feels like being trapped in a ring of fire. That intensity can sometimes be great, but sometimes can be dangerous as well. There is a fire burning inside them is so intense that can be overpowering at times. There is intense passion and love where there are high’s and low’s and up’s and down’s.

The song comes in with an intense exploding heat that explodes in to a big wall of sound. There is a rawness and intensity to it that reminds more of ‘Pyromania’ era songs then ‘Hysteria’ and for that I think it kicks some major ass. It is loud, gut punching and a heavy hard rocking track. Heavier than anything on ‘Hysteria’. It is old school Leppard and that might be my favorite era of the band so this is a true standout for me. The song would go on to be on their compilation album ‘Retro Active’, but in a slightly different version I believe.

Now, I actually had all the 7″ Singles at one time, but I was always missing the final two puzzle pieces. So, when the band released the Hysteria Singles Box Set, I was finally album to finish the puzzle of the Hysteria Cover art. We will create this picture as we go trough the singles. First up…”Animal”…then “Woman”…and now we have “Pour Some Sugar On Me”…
