Def Leppard – ‘Hits Vegas: Live at Planet Hollywood’ (2020) – Album Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

In 2020, Def Leppard released a really cool box set called London to Vegas. It had 2 shows, one from the 02 in London where they played the entire Hysteria album live and the other called ‘Hits Vegas: Live at Planet Hollywood’ where Def Leppard did another residency. The set had CDs for the shows as well as Blu Ray (or DVD) so you could watch it too. But that wasn’t all. They also released the albums individually and I bought each one as well, but this time on Vinyl.

This thing is impressive folks.  You get 28 songs and they are full of deep cuts as well as the classics.  This show is 2 1/2 hours long…2 1/2 hours…you heard that correctly.  Now the actual show was about 4 songs less so you know they added a few songs from other shows to give you most, if not all the songs they played.  The set is a 3 LP set in a beautiful gatefold packaging that include 3 beautiful transparent blue vinyl. They are really nice. However, since the cover has the U.S. flag on it and being 3 LP’s…wouldn’t a red, white & blue have been even cooler!? The answer is yes.

In a nutshell, the show was fantastic. Joe as you know is not as spot on with the vocals as when he was younger and that is not a problem here as the band does assist heavily with the harmonies and background vocals to help smooth that out.  I would say after a couple songs, you don’t even notice and you just enjoy the show. I mean by the end, I thought everyone sounded great. It was very enjoyable.

As far as the highlights from the show, it is really only the deep cuts. Let me explain, I have seen them a ton of times and written a bunch of live reviews of Def Leppard, so for me, it is those songs you don’t get to hear often that really stand out for me. For example, the opening track of “Die Hard the Hunter” is not one they play that often anymore so this was a massive treat and a great way to kick off the show. Then with songs like like “Paper Sun”, “Billy’s Got a Gun”, “Promises”, “Mirror, Mirror (Look into My Eyes)”, “Let’s Go”, and “Now”, I couldn’t be happier to hear these. It makes the show really fun and simply fantastic. That is the one thing great about the Las Vegas Residencies, they play the deep cuts.

Another really cool moment is their acoustic set. They played a couple rare gems here with “Let Me Be the One” from ‘X’ and off their self-titled album they played “We Belong” which is extra special as it is the only song that all 5 members sing lead.  Totally Awesome!!  They also played one song they haven’t played since the ‘Adrenalize’ Tour, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” and this is the stuff we diehards love to hear! These 10 tracks that I mentioned are the entire reason to buy this release in any form you want to get.

Like I said, I’m not going to go into detail as 18 of the 28 songs are pretty common so we already know Leppard can slay them. Plus, I’ve talked about all of them before in other live albums I’ve reviewed. It is the 10 songs we don’t get to hear very often that make this set really incredible. Anytime I hear the words Def Leppard and Las Vegas Residency, I get excited as the stuff we get is top notch and they always throw in those songs the diehards want to hear. As a result, My Overall Score is a 4.5 out of 5.0 Stars and easily one of their cooler live releases. Worth grabbing if you ever see it. Thanks for stopping by and we will talk the other Live show next week.

  1. Wow, Great looking vinyl set Johnny. Great to see they stuffed the album with tunes and didn’t do that lazy etching or whatever you call that. Good song selection as well with tunes like Paper Sun!
    Excellent score dude!

  2. The point at which I stopped reviewing Leppard. Couldn’t do these 6 disc box sets. Had to tap out.

I honestly don’t know if I have listened to it yet, because I can’t remember hearing We Belong live.

  3. Nice find. I wish my favourite (still) touring bands would bring out the deep cuts. When I go to a show of a band I’ve seen often, I get tempted to make a sign that says “DON’T PLAY THAT SONG ANYMORE”.

I can’t believe they brought out Mirror Mirror for the set. It’s my favourite High n Dry song.

  4. I got the separate boxes of these from the sale at my local a few years back. So guess I’m missing the book since I bought them separate.

Haven’t given these much time with so many Def Leppard releases being out lately.

  5. This 2019 Las Vegas Residency set was my first introduction to “Let Me Be the One” and I’ve loved that song ever since! The deep cuts were great, despite the 2013 Las Vegas set being much more hardcore, but for what it was, I loved the 2019 set! I think it’s time for Def Leppard to do another Las Vegas residency!
