Friday New Releases – September 19, 2025

I have had the whole week off and did a staycation. It was awesome. But that doesn’t mean I still can’t bring you the Friday New Releases to you and this week we have around 40 albums for you. I am curious about the 38 Special album and the Jelusick so those will get a listen. Jury is out on Mike Tramp because I am not enjoying these rehashed White Lion songs. If I want to hear the White Lion songs, I’ll listen to the WHITE LION SONGS! Sorry…I was about to go on a giant rant there. Jeff Scott Soto, Gary Schutt, Michael Voss, Neal Grusky – ’24th of June: Alive ‘N Kissing’ (1995) – Album Review (The Jeff Scott Soto Series)

Back on June 24th, of probably 1995 (I think) at a place called Kühners Landhaus in Kissing, Germany, a group of musicians and friends gathered together for a small promotional show. Those four friends were Jeff Scott Soto, Gary Schutt, Michael Voss and Neal Grusky. That short little show was released as Promo and limited to only 500 copies by Long Island Records and released sometime in 1995. I’ve been wanting this one for quite a long time and finally bit the bullet and bought it as it wasn’t too expensive, but is on the pricier side of things.

It is a very relaxed show and the guys have a lot of fun with it but when the music plays, it is all business and all perfection. They are in front of a very polite and yet receptive crowd and they whip through 6 tracks with Jeff on vocals for 5 and Michael Voss on 1 track. They are joined by Mike Foerster to help out on acoustic guitar as this is an all acoustic set. No drums, simply guitars and vocals. An intimate setting and the guys doing what they do best.

The CD opens with Gary Schutt calling for Jeff to come to the stage so they can start the show. When Jeff does finally arrive, they kick in to a beautiful rendition of Jeff’s band Takara’s song “Restless Heart”. The original version is a power ballad with some great keyboards and a big chorus. Here, it is stripped down to its bare essence with Jeff giving such a stellar rendition. There is no explosive moments like in the regular version, it is reserved and even more emotive than the original. Jeff sounds amazing and sounds as good or even better than the studio version. Simply stunning.

The Collection: Ep. 73 – The Cinderella Collection

This week on the collection, we are going to go through everything I have in my collection that relates to the band Cinderella and yes, that includes Tom Keifer albums as well. We will start with the debut ‘Night Songs’ and end with the Tom Keifer solo album ‘Rise’ and go through everything in between. And that includes Vinyl, CDs, Singles and even Cassettes…the works. If you like their 80’s Glam sound or their more bluesy rock, it is all here from studio albums, to live albums to greatest hits compilations. Okay, it isn’t all there, but it is everything I have!! My Sunday Song – “Ordinary” by Train

For My Sunday Song #450, we are talking the song “Ordinary” by the band Train. The song is from the Spiderman 2 Soundtrack as well as a bonus studio track on the Train album ‘Alive At Last’. The song was the fourth single off the Spiderman 2 soundtrack and was released August 17, 2004. I believe the song charted at #12 on the Adult Top 40 Chart (not the actual Top 40 Chart). It was written by Pat Monahan from Train and composer Bart Hendrickson.

The song was written for Spiderman 2 and the theme of it fits Spiderman perfectly. He goes out of his way to try and save everyone, but he always get left behind as people move on. It is a really darker theme to it. He does it all for a woman. People think he is trying to save the world but he is simply trying to save the girl. At the same time, he needs her to save him as he is in so deep and he is just a kid. He doesn’t recognize who he is anymore. I love the line “And this web that I’m tied up / Is taking me right up these walls”. He is afraid it is too much. It is the darker side of Peter Parker. And it is awesome.

The song is pretty heavy…for a Train song. The darker themes come out in the music as it has a seriousness too it you aren’t used to with them. The drums are powerful, the guitar is ripping. There is orchestration that gives it a grander feel and the piano is simply haunting. Pat really delivers the lyrics in such a beautiful way. He really feels the lyrics and he conveys the darkness behind Spiderman’s eyes. This is a completely different side of Train and when I heard this song along with another bonus studio track called “New Sensation”, I thought we might get a new direction for the band…but that didn’t happen.

A lot of old bands this week with new releases…I’m not sure what year I’m in actually as a result. But I think it is 2025. The only one I’m interested in hearing is the Led Zeppelin E.P. and Foreigner Box Set for ‘4’. For something newer, I’ll check out the new Daughtry E.P. , but that is probably all. Def Leppard – ‘Greatest Hits: Walmart Exclusive’ (2025) – Album Review (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

I’m not sure the reason behind this next one. Def Leppard has numerous greatest hits album, but for some strange reason, it was believed the world needed a new one. What we have is simply called ‘Greatest Hits’ and is on vinyl only and Exclusive to Walmart on a rather cool Orange & Yellow vinyl. It was released on Friday, August 29th (I believe) and I got it on that Saturday when I got bored and figured, why not take a drive to Walmart and pick this up. You see, I refuse to order from Walmart.com because my account with the store was hacked and someone bought over $600 worth of stuff…which I was able to dispute and get resolved since I received nothing from this screw up by Walmart!!

Anyway…sorry…went off on a tangent there. Back to this release. This is simply a money grab, pure and simple. And of course they grabbed my money since I collect anything Def Leppard…I know…it is a sickness. But what is great about this release is really NOTHING!! Well, the colored vinyl is cool, but that is it. The packaging is rather plan with an all black background with the Def Leppard logo and in very small print ‘Greatest Hits’. The track listing is SAD…really sad. We have five from ‘Hysteria’, three from ‘Pyromania’, one from ‘High ‘n’ Dry’ and one from ‘Vault’. That is it! 10 tracks that we have a MILLION FREAKING TIMES on other greatest hits compilations. And no insert! Nothing new, nothing special, nothing to run out and grab unless you are a fool like me.

The Collection: Ep. 72 – Van Halen on Vinyl

This week on The Collection, we are talking Van Halen. More specifically, Van Halen on vinyl. We will go through all my Van Halen Vinyl including studio albums, live albums, box sets, 7″ Singles and even Bootlegs. From the debut up to Balance as I don’t have Van Halen III or A Different Kind of Truth (and some live). But I have enough to talk about, so let’s do that. My Sunday Song – “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne

For My Sunday Song #449, we re going to look at the super fun song “Stacy’s Mom” by the band Fountains of Wayne. The single was released on May 19, 2003 and is off their album ‘Welcome Interstate Managers’. The song was probably the biggest mainstream hit for the band where it went to #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it received massive airplay on MTV as Stacy’s Mom was played by Supermodel Rachel Hunter and who didn’t enjoy watching that.

The song was written by bassist Adam Schlesinger and vocalist Chris Collingwood. The song was inspired by a childhood friend of Adam’s who thought his grandmother was really hot. Take that and add a little Mrs. Robinson and you have the song. “Stacy’s Mom” is about a teenage boy who was dating Stacy and loved to spend time at Stacy’s house out by the pool in hopes Stacy’s mom was around. He fantasized that her mom was into him and now that he is older and not the boy he used to be, he could be the man around the house for Stacy’s mom since her dad was no longer in the picture. It is a typical boy fantasy transformed in to a brilliantly executed song.

The song is pure Power Pop and New Wave. So much so in fact the opening riffs is almost identical to The Cars’ classic “Just What I Needed”. I mean…I.D.E.N.T.I.C.A.L. They actually played the opening riff and it was not a sample despite what Ric Ocasek might have thought. The song is a blast. It is so catchy and you instantly get swept in the excitement. It is full of joy and I love the handclaps towards the end. It is one of those bright and sunny songs that feels like Summer and will put a smile on your face.

‘Give Me A Word: The Collective Soul Story’ – Documentary Review

Recently, Collective Soul released on Blu-Ray, their very own documentary entitled ‘Give Me A Word: The Collective Soul Story’ and I finally had a chance to sit down and watch it. And I am so glad I did. One of my all time favorite bands, I feel Collective Soul is one of the most underrated bands out there. They have a unique sound and tone that is all their own. You hear one of the many cool-ass riffs they’ve written and you know in an instant that is Collective Soul. You hear the vocals of lead singer, Ed Roland, and you know it is Collective Soul.

The band hails from Stockbridge, Georgie which is just south of Atlanta and because of that, I consider them a local band for me as I lived just outside of Atlanta myself. Thanks to the college radio station at Georgia State University (where my wife went to college around that time), the world was introduced to the song ‘Shine’ thanks to radio DJ Southside Steve…man, I so remember that station and DJ. Brings back so many fond radio memories. It was because of that little college radio station playing ‘Shine’ that the band drew interest and were signed to Atlantic Records. They released their debut album, ‘Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid’ which was really only a collection of demos. They felt, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

The documentary kicks off with the band recording an album at Elvis Presley’s Palm Springs house and shows the band recording as well as talking to them about the history of the band. While they were there recording, Lisa Marie Presley passed away which is a little surreal for them.

We go back to the debut and they walk through their time with Atlantic and then how things fell apart once their contract was up with the label. Ross Childress, lead guitarist, slept with Ed Roland’s wife so he was out of the band. The original drummer, Shane Evans, got in to drugs and was in a really bad place and he left the band. That left Ed, his brother Dean and bass player Will Turpin to carry on, which they did.
