Cheap Trick – ‘Next Position Please’ (1983) – Album Review (The Cheap Trick Collection Series)

After the disappointing results of the George Martin produced ‘One on One’, the band went back to their earlier Power Pop sound using producer Todd Rundgren. Now, hearing Rundgren was the producer made me think this might get just as experimental as the previous one, but surprisingly it doesn’t. It sticks to a sound of the band’s earlier albums like ‘In Color’ and ‘Heaven Tonight’. As we are now dead in the middle of the new wave movement that Cheap Trick influenced the bands in this genre greatly, it was a strange thing to have them go back in time with their sound and not push the sound further forward. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound like the 80’s at times because it does, it is just when they do they classic Cheap Trick sound, it really works well.

The band at the time was still Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Bun E. Carlos and newer member Jon Brant. And from what I’ve read, many members of the band feel this is one of their favorite albums. I can’t say I agree with that statement, but we will get to that in a minute.

The album was recorded back in December 1982 at Utopia Sound in Lake Hill, New York which I am guessing is Rundgren’s studio as he has an album called Utopia which I own. But the album didn’t actually see the light of day August 15, 1983 which to me is quite a long stretch between recording and releasing. That would be normal in today’s timeframe with delays on vinyl pressing, but back then turnaround time was much faster. Not sure why the delay. The album charted only as high as #61 and the two singles on the album didn’t break the Top 40 and in fact, not sure if they even charted at all. The album didn’t even go Gold. This was not turning out to be a very shining example of the who the band were.

You Pick It! – Which Album to Review in July?

You, my reader, are going to pick an album for me to review each month.  It is really simple…first, I will give you 5 albums to choose from and second, you will tell me which one of those you would like to see reviewed on the site.  See…simple!

There are a few simple rules I have put in to place in my selections.  They are…

  • One has to be a new release (within the last month)
  • One has to be one I have never heard before (new releases don’t count for this one)
  • One has to be from a genre I don’t normally listen to at all or very often
  • And the last two are choices from my collection that I haven’t reviewed before

Another Friday of new releases and this one is jammed pack full of over 20 new albums. And these are the only the ones I chose to list. I would venture to say there should be at least one thing of interest to you in this list, if not, well…sorry. I have only 2 albums I want and one I actually already have. My choices are in Blue.   • 910I1CR8rML._SX522_  Beastie Boys – Beastie Boys Music – (Capitol Records): I am a casual Beastie Boys fan so a greatest hits album is really perfect for me. I do have License to Ill because everyone should have that one. I don’t have this on order but maybe I will put in on my Christmas List!!
  • 71V3Of3HfyL._SS500_  Smith & Myers – Volume 2 – (Atlantic Recording): The Shinedown boys of Brent Smith and Zach Myers are back with Volume 2 after only 2 weeks since Volume 1. And let me tell you, Volume 1 was great so this should be more of the same. It is usually all acoustic (with an electric thrown in every now and then) and some great covers. I think they are going to put this on vinyl so yes, another Christmas List item!!!

Friday New Releases – June 14th

Happy Friday!!  Welcome to the weekend.  There are a ton of releases this week, sadly though, not much for me.  There is one I will listen to and I am excited about and another that I will listen to celebrate their 50 years together.  The rest, hopefully you will be digging those!  My choices are highlighted in Blue as usual.  Let me know what you are interested in hearing and what I might have missed.  Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!!

  • 71plwaZe7oL._SS500_  Caleb Johnson & the Ramblin’ Saints – Born From the Southern Ground – (Big Johnson Records):  Caleb has such an amazing voices and for me, one of the best voices to come out of American Idol.  His debut I thought was great and from what I have heard off this one, this release will be fantastic as well.  Give him a try if you haven’t, you won’t be disappointed.

  • 616ig+9LFaL._AC_UL115_  ZZ Top – Goin’ 50 – (Warner Bros) – (Deluxe 3CD out August 16th): Can you believe they have been going for 50 years?  No, I can’t either.  This is a celebration of their career and a career worth celebrating.  It looks like these are remastered 2019 versions so that should be great to hear!! Digital and Single Disc CD is today!!  3 Disc Set and Vinyl is August 16th in case you want the mack daddy version.

The Original Vs. The Cover – “Blinded By the Light”

For this edition of The Original Vs. The Cover, we are going to explore the Bruce Springsteen song “Blinded by the Light” which was later covered by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. For Bruce, it was his first single in the U.S. off his 1973 debut album, Greeting From Asbury Park, N.J.  And…it flopped!  Manfred Mann’s version was released in 1977 and went all the way to #1 and I believe it was Bruce’s first #1 song and his only. It took someone performing his song for him to get a #1 song…interesting considering how much he is acclaimed as being The Boss.

The song was very auto-biographical for Bruce.  There were a ton of references to friends, his youth experiences and even him getting sick.  The song came about because the record company felt he needed a single.  So, sitting in his bedroom with a rhyming dictionary, Bruce threw so many words together and came up with this beast.  He went nuts with the words and threw everything in, but I don’t see the kitchen sink.

As I said, the song flopped in the U.S. and it was probably because it had so many words.  No person listening to the radio could remember all the words.  The chorus was catchy, no doubt, but it is a difficult song to get in to with the way it is presented.  Bruce vocals are done in a singing / speaking format rather than full on singing which is typical Bruce.

Friday New Releases – December 14th

Happy Friday and welcome to the last Friday New Releases for 2018…unless something shows up for the last 2 weeks that are worth showing, but right now…NOTHING!  So enjoy it while you can and we will be back sometime in 2019 when we have new releases to report.  There is really only one I am interested in and hopefully I will get it for Christmas (or Birthday…either works as same day).  I have highlighted it in Blue…hint..hint.  Let me know if there is something for you this week or something I missed.

  • 41yRclcnksL._AC_US436_QL65_  Jorn – 50 Years On Earth: The Anniversary – (Frontiers Records):  Jorn Lande has had a rather productive solo career.  Not all albums were perfect, but there is enough good stuff to make this more than worth it.  All 12 solo albums in once package and at around $5 to $6 bucks a CD, not a bad price either.  I love songs like Sunset Station and his cover of Kiss’ Naked City is fantastic.  A voice like David Coverdale adds to my enjoyment.  Check him out…

Friday New Releases – September 23rd

Happy Friday!!  We made it through another week.  Now let’s enjoy the weekend with some great new music.  There is so much to choose from this weekend and some I can’t wait to grab a hold of and sonically consume.  Let me know what your interested in, and as always, my most anticipated ones are highlighted in Blue.  There are a lot so I am only going to comment on four of them, the others Bruce Springsteen and Joe Bonamassa are just too obvious choices that I am sure a lot of you are interested in as well.

Brendan O’Brien – Producer Extraordinaire #2

After I wrote on one of my favorite music producers “Mutt” Lange, I started thinking of other producers I tend to gravitate towards and the first one that popped into my head was Brendan O’Brien.

The 1990’s

Brendan was very busy in the ’90’s during the Grunge & Alternative movement and worked with so many of the top bands of that era.  He worked with Stone Temple Pilots throughout the ’90’s on their albums ‘Core ‘(1992), ‘Purple’ (1994), ‘Tiny Music’ (1996) and even ‘No.4’ (1999).  The relationship continued into the 2000’s with his work on their fifth album ‘Shangri-La Dee Da’ (2001).
