My buddy, Mike Ladano, at Grab a Stack of Rock had a friend named Len Labelle who was selling his CD collection. Mike sent pictures out and I was so in on buying as so many pieces that I needed. Len & Mike are in Canada and shipping was going to be expensive to the States, so I made sure to buy enough to make it worth it…and it so was. 55 CDs later and we have a ton of great stuff to add to the collection. If you like Journey, Dokken, Sammy Hagar, Tesla, Slaughter and more…you’ll like this.

And if you can’t watch the video…here is everything…
I was on Facebook Marketplace just goofing around when I stumbled across a picture of someone selling a bunch of CD’s & DVD’s. I zoomed in on the picture and though I couldn’t see everything, I made out a bunch of CD’s that I would want. I checked the price it was only $50, plus $10 for shipping. I thought to myself, that looks like a good deal…so I took a chance and bought it. There are around 75 CDs, 13 DVDs and 3 books. Everything music related. And did I get a good deal? Watch the show and find out. If you like George Lynch, Dee Snider, Dimebag Darrell, Jani Lane, Firehouse, Nickelback and so many more bands, you will think I hit the motherlode!!

And here is everything in case you can’t watch the video…
In my quest for 80’s Rock Singles with Picture Sleeves, I found this one from the rock band Journey. It was for the song “Only the Young” which was featured on the soundtrack to the movie, ‘Vision Quest’. The single was released on January 8, 1985 and went all the way to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The B-Side, which isn’t listed on the cover, is for Sammy Hagar’s song “I’ll Fall in Love Again” which was also on the ‘Vision Quest’ soundtrack.
The song was originally intended for Journey’s album ‘Frontiers’, but was pulled at the last minute and replaced with “Back Talk” and “Troubled Child”. However, the song didn’t go unused as it was sold to the band Scandal who recorded it for their 1984 album ‘Warrior’. Of course, Journey would still use it for the soundtrack, obviously.
There is a touching story that surrounds the song. Journey received a request from the Make-A-Wish Foundation back in 1983 as a 16 year old boy named Kenny Sykaluk was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. His wish was to meet the band. The band flew out to visit him in the hospital where they showered him with gifts including a signed 49ers Football helmet from the team and a signed Journey Platinum award from the band. They also brought along a walkman that contained the Journey version of “Only the Young”. Kenny was the first person outside the band to hear the song. The event moved the band so much that Steve Perry broke down the second he stepped outside Kenny’s hospital room and had to be taken somewhere privately to regain his composure.
For My Sunday Song #393, we are on the third Japanese Bonus Track picked by Mike Ladano. This time around it is the Van Halen song “Crossing Over” off the band’s 1995 album ‘Balance’. The song was written by Van Halen (credited to all the members) and was not just a Japanese Bonus Track, but was also used as the B-Side to “Can’t Stop Loving You”. And if you recently bought the new Van Halen Collection II box set, you got the track on the 4th Bonus LP so that is really cool.
I read somewhere that the song was not actually written during the Balance recording sessions, but originated way back in 1983 when it was titled “David’s Song”. Eddie played all the instruments on the demo. The song wasn’t about Roth, it was about a friend of Eddie’s name David who had committed suicide. If you read the lyrics you can get that from them. Eddie is trying to reach out and see his friend one more time. To touch him one more time before he crosses over. It is a dark song and powerful too.
The song starts off with Eddie and the tone is really eerie and then the bass comes in with a little duh dum, and then the Alex is in on the drums and those drums are unmistakable Alex as he has such a unique sound. There are some electronic drum elements too. It all is very dark. Sammy finally comes in and sings and it isn’t all powerful. It is slow and the lyrics are very deliberate and meant to convey the dark tone to the song. There is an importance to the lyrics, to the sound, to it all. I read somewhere that Eddie’s demo was used for this track and they layered in Alex and Sammy and if that is true, that is cool. The song isn’t explosive and the chorus isn’t very catchy, but this is the mid 90’s and things were not always done the way we were used to hearing things. Overall, a really cool track.
For My Sunday Song #381, we are kicking off another 10 song set and this time around Tim Durling from Tim’s Vinyl Confessions is picking the songs. Go check out his YouTube channel for some great content, you won’t be disappointed. Like Deke before him, Tim had a theme. He picked songs that are rare non-album tracks and B-Sides and we are kicking it off with the song “Satisfied” by Sammy Hagar. The song is leftover from the 1981 ‘Standing Hampton’ recording session and was released as a B-Side for the song “I’ll Fall in Love Again” and I believe on the song “Heavy Metal” as well.
The song was written by Sammy Hagar and basically it seems to be what the title says. He’s satisfied with his woman who I believe he is keeping satisfied as well since he is an “All Night Man”. Not much deeper than that and does it really need to be. This is early 80’s rock and it is all about having a good time and there is nothing wrong with that.
The song is an absolute beast and it is hard to believe this was left off the album. I believe he had about 20 songs left over in some form or fashion from the ‘Standing Hampton’ sessions. The song is a pure rocker and it speeds through with some racing guitar riffs and a cocky Sammy spitting out the vocals. The solo is more reserved and mixed with some cool bass licks, then the solo gets more riveting and fast before Sammy comes soaring back in. The ending rocks too with a some bombastically paced out slams of the drums and Sammy grunts / screams. I guess this would be the climax of the song…ooh, I can’t believe I went there…but I did because he’s “Satisfied”.
