Glenn Hughes – ‘Resonate’ – Album Review

At the age of 65, most people think of retirement.  Thank God Glenn Hughes is not most people.  At 65, this man is busier and better than ever.  Since 2010, Glenn Hughes has been one of the hardest working singers in the business.  He has put out 3 albums with Black Country Communion, 1 album with California Breed, 1 album with Voodoo Hill, extensive touring, he even had time to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Deep Purple…oh yeah and heart surgery in 2013.

After 8 long years since his last solo album, Glenn Hughes now brings us his heaviest rock album ever with ‘Resonate’ on Frontiers Record SRL.

There are 2 things that make this album incredible.

1. His voice.  The “Voice of Rock” does not disappoint.  His voice sounds just as great now as when he was younger.  Not many people can still sing with such quality (cough, cough Meatloaf) and he sounds better than most of the young artists out there right now.

Friday New Releases – November 18th

Wow!! Some huge releases today!  I can’t wait to get into some of these. I hope there is something for you as well.  Sixx:A.M., Metallica, Bruno and Miranda are doing it for me today.  Here is to some great listening pleasure.  My favorites are highlighted in Blue.

  • cover170x170-45  Sixx:A.M. – Prayers for the Blessed Vol. 2 – (Eleven Seven Music):  Volume 1 was released earlier this year and was OUTSTANDING!!!  I have extreme high hopes for this one as well and since they have never diappointed, I expect to be blown away…AGAIN!!  Could they end up with 2 albums in my Top 10 albums of the year…wait and see.

  • 51iCjOdvPoL._AC_US200_  Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct – (Blackened Recordings):  Metallica is back heavier and louder than ever.  I was a little disappointed in their last release so I am hoping they return with some of their old magic.    If the song, “Hardwired” is any indication, we might just see some more greatness.

Bon Jovi – ‘This House Is Not For Sale’ – Album Review

The song “God Bless This Mess” sums up the album. The album is a complete mess. The album has some good songs, but overall lacks heart and the great songwriting from years past. I really wanted to like this album and hoped they could make one last great album. That did not happen.

What is wrong with the album?  Where do I begin.

1. The album is so formulaic and a repeat of their last few albums. There is definitely nothing new.

2. The backing vocals are lacking. Richie Sambora’s vocals alongside Jon’s voice are sorely missed.

3.  There are no great power ballads and a lot of the songs lack any real emotion. At times it feels like they are phoning it in.  It is very disappointing.

Friday New Releases – October 11th

Happy Friday, it couldn’t get here quick enough.  There are a handful of releases this week. Nothing has me overly excited, but there are a few I will give a listen.  Those will be highlighted in Blue.

  • 51o1xhoeznl-_ac_us160_  Sting – 57th & 9th – (A&M):  I haven’t listened to much of his stuff lately, but figured with the limited releases this week I would give it a try.  No big expectations, so hopefully won’t be disappointed.

  • 61xdukofeil-_ac_us160_  Rik Emmett & RESolution 9 – RES9 – (Provogue):  The former Triumph singer is back.  I was so pumped when I heard he was putting out new material.  He even teams up with former bandmates…Cool!!  However, early comments don’t sound promising.  Doesn’t matter…he has earned enough cred for me to give it a spin.

Dee Snider – ‘We Are The Ones’ – Album Review

When I heard Dee Snider was finally releasing another solo album, I was actually excited.  I had recently become a fan of his and his former band Twisted Sister after watching their documentary “We Are Twisted F#@king Sister”.  I had heard of them, of course, and love all their hits; however, I garnered a whole new respect for the band and how much they busted their hump and earned every ounce of success they had.

My expectations for the album were relatively low due mainly to his solo release ‘Dee does Broadway’.  The Twisted Sister lead singer doing Broadway tunes?  I couldn’t wrap my head around that one.  So, imagine my delight when I hit play.  It was beyond anything I was expecting and it was full of surprises.  The album rocked out, but was much more radio friendly for most of the songs.  There was enough variety to keep your interest and not disappoint any fans.Damon Ranger was the producer and helped Dee craft a great all around album.

The album opened with the title song “We Are the Ones” which to no surprise was a rocker and exactly what I was hoping he would deliver.  The next song, “Over Again” which is another old school rocker.  The chorus is very catchy and you will catch yourself singing it Over and Over and Over Again (sorry…had to go there).

The Scariest Bands – Happy Halloween!!

Halloween is a fun time to dress up into your alter ego whether it is Tramping out or going full on scary.  The following bands don’t need Halloween to go full on scary because they are that way all the time.  I am going to keep the list rather mainstream because there is some really crazy sh#t out there that actually scares me, but probably too crude and disturbing to actually post.

Here are the some of the Scariest Rock Bands that have crossed our path.

Slipknot:  A heavy metal band out of Iowa, Slipknot is known for the stage shows where the band dresses up in similar clothing but each wearing masks that are very unique and quite scary at times.  The band would do a lot of stage diving, fighting and occasionally would light other band members on fire which made for a crazy concert experience.

My Sunday Song – “My Champion” by Alter Bridge

“My Champion” by Alter Bridge is this week’s choice for My Sunday Song #12.   The song is off their brand new album “The Last Hero” and if you haven’t listened to it…you should.  There is a great review over at Stick It In Your Ear by DeKE if you want to read up on how awesome the album is.

It is a very uplifting and inspiring song.  If you know someone who is struggling, let them know that they are your champion.  They might need a little encouragement or just a word from you that could help them with whatever they are going through.

I hope the song and the lyrics help you out in some way.

Friday New Releases – October 21st

Friday again and we are definitely getting closer to Christmas as there are several Christmas albums on the new release schedule (and I don’t want to listen to any of them!!!).  Thank goodness there are some great rock releases as well. If you like women rockers, there are two great ones coming out today in The Pretty Reckless and The Pretenders.  So many to listen to and can’t wait to hear them. My choices are highlighted in Blue.

  • The-Pretty-Reckless-Who-You-Seeling-For-2016-226x226  Pretty Reckless – Who You Selling For – (Razor & Tie):  Taylor Momsen and gang are ready for the new hard rock release.  Taylor has a great voice that is perfect to rock out.  She is amazing and so is this band. High hopes for this one.

61paiql5ul-_ac_us160_  The Pretenders – Alone – (BMG):  This was an unexpected surprise. So excited that Chrissie Hynde is back. I have followed them since the early 80’s and love everything they do. This is a must for me.

Stryper – 30 Years of ‘To Hell With the Devil’

Stryper is currently touring in support of the 30th Anniversary of their break-through album ‘To Hell With the Devil’.  The album was released back on October 24, 1986 and became the first Christian Metal album to go platinum.  It was the best selling Christian metal album all the way up to 2001 when P.O.D. outsold it with their album ‘Satellite’ (another great album).

The videos for the album were on regular rotation on MTV which was so unusual for a band that was labeled as Christian.  They actually made it cool to listen to music about Christ. They are the reason why I still listen to Christian music today (well Christ has a lot to do with it too).  Most Christian music was fairly boring and somewhat cheesy.  But not Stryper. They had screaming guitars, pounding drums, deep bass and soaring vocals. Perfect for the so called Glam era that was overtaking the radios at the time.

The band had its own gimmicks.  The hair of course…wow!!  The hairspray bill alone must of have been outrageous.  The most memorable was them wearing the yellow & black leather outfits during their shows (which they will don again during their anniversary tour for the album). The band also handed out bibles to the crowd (I never got one).  I did see them live on their tour in support of the next album ‘In God We Trust’, but was not close enough to get a bible.
