I have to admit that the events of this past weekend have bothered me more than I wanted to admit.  I can’t stop thinking about how bad things really are in this world.  The madness seems to be everywhere.  The senseless death of so many innocent people just going about their life has made me pause to wonder why.

The why of it all I feel we were never meant to understand.  I know everything happens for a reason, although we might not see that reason for some time.  I am not an overly religious person, but I am a Christian and I know there is an ultimate plan for me and for everyone. Death is out of our control and when our time is up, our time is up.

For that reason, we have to go on living life and not cower to the craziness that is consuming our world.  If we stop living, “they win”.  The only thing that needs to change is that we need to make sure we live our life to the best of our ability.  Showing love and kindness to everyone.  Stop the rudeness!  Say hello when you pass people on the streets! Help someone when they are down.  Whatever it is, show love and respect to everyone.

Turntables & Vinyl – Part 2

I thought I would do a follow-up to the Turntables & Vinyl post from a couple weeks ago since the turntable we bought was crap. We returned the first turntable we bought since it could not maintain the appropriate speed.  I did some research and found that the audio-technica AT-LP60 was getting really good reviews for a reasonably priced turntable (only $99).  I still didn’t want to spend too much as I still wasn’t sure how much I would listen to it.

I have to say it plays so much better than the original one we bought on a whim at the trendy clothes store that sales vinyl (I don’t want to advertise for them since their clothes are so overpriced).  This turntable will automatically place the needle on the album for you which is good as my daughter was really nervous about doing it on the other turntable. I don’t think she wanted to scratch her new James Bay album (a picture disc at that).

Now that the we have a very good working turntable, we had to find some local record stores that sell vinyl.  We have found 4 places so far in Charlotte and I am proud to say, we have been to all 4.  We actually visited 3 of them on Saturday since they were all in close proximity to each other.   The other one we went to last weekend.

Christina Grimmie – Voice Alum – Dies

Tragic news to wake up to again this morning.  Christina Grimmie was shot and killed by a crazed fan, it sounds like, last night after her concert.  My daughters were fans of hers before she was on the Voice and even after.  I hate to have to tell them this news when they get up.  Here is a video in her honor.  I picked the song that had the most listens from them when I looked in my iTunes library.

Friday New Releases – June 10th

Another great Friday of releases.  The one I am most excited about is Scorpion Child.  I hope there is something that gets your blood pumping.  The ones in blue are the ones I will be listening to over the next couple of days.

  • 81TAzHEbwwL._SX450_  Scorpion Child – Acid Roulette – (Nuclear Blast America) – They are back and I couldn’t be happier.  Their self-titled first album was a masterpiece. They have a classic rock sound with a modern edge.  I can’t get enough of new bands that have that retro sound.  This will be the first album I listen to in the car on the way to work.

#TBT – Favorite Albums from 2011

To continue my Throwback Thursday of the last two weeks, here are my Favorite albums of 2011 (in no particular order):

Soren Andersen - Constant ReplaySoren Andersen – Constant Replay:  This is an incredible debut album.  The album name is accurate as it was on constant replay back when I got it.  There are so many great songs and no fillers.  I just love “Song About You”, “Black Lady”, “Lavender in My Calendar” and “Cold Shock”.   Soren has toured as the lead guitarist in the Glenn Hughes Band and played on numerous albums including Mike Tramp.  Put it on and enjoy the ride.

Royal Bliss – The Truth EP – Album Review

On Friday, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Royal Bliss released an E.P.  I was completely unaware and did not have it listed in my new releases.  I couldn’t wait to play it and listen to some great rock music.

If you are familiar with Royal Bliss, you know they are a hard rock band.  Not too hard, but hard enough.  They have had some great songs such as “Save Me”, “Crazy”, “I Love You”, “Welcome” and “Drink My Stupid Away” among others.

When I clicked on the album in Apple Music, I noticed something strange.  It said that Royal Bliss was categorized as “Country”.  WTF???  I don’t remember them being country. I looked at the album cover and thought, they look a little country in the picture.  Maybe someone was lazy at Apple and just classified them as country based on the picture.

“Bring It On Home” – Ace Frehley Vs. Train

There have been a lot of cover albums this year and two of those that I have listened to recently have covered the same song, “Bring It On Home” by Led Zeppelin.  I know that Led Zeppelin was not the original version of this song either as it was written by Willie Dixon. The first version was released in 1966 and recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson.

I guess then I am trying to compare two cover versions of a song that was a cover song for the band that both covers are covering.  I think I just confused myself.  Anyway, my quest here is to determine who gave us the best version of the song based on Led Zeppelin’s version. Before we can do that, we must listen to Zeppelin’s version.  Take a listen and then we will continue.

Music Challenge #3 – Catfish and the Bottlemen – The Ride

It is time for another music challenge.  Go and listen to an album that you have heard nothing about and pick it solely based on the band name, album name or album cover.

This time around I went off Band Name and Album cover.  The band was Catfish and the Bottlemen and the album cover was a drawing of an alligator biting his tail.  My first thought based on this information was that this band must be a country band with some major redneck roots (and I mean that in a good way).

Well, that was not the case.  Catfish and the Bottlemen are a four-piece band from the UK and their sound was not country at all.  They remind me more of an indie type band so they could be categorized as an alternative band.  The Ride is the band’s second album and follow-up to their album The Balcony.  I think I will check that album out as well.

On my first listen of The Ride, I did not like the album overall.  However, there were 3 standout songs on that first run through and they remained my standouts the more I listened.  The songs were “Postpone”, “Oxygen” and “Red”.

Muhammad Ali – This song is for you

With the passing of Muhammad Ali, I was trying to think what I could do to honor his memory when my site is supposed to be about all things music.  Well, I came across this video on Youtube with Muhammad Ali introducing one of his favorite songs “Child of the Wilderness” by Michel and felt this was perfect.

Friday New Releases – June 3rd

Finally a Friday of new releases to get excited about. The last couple of weeks haven’t given me much that I enjoy.  I hope there is something that excites you.  The ones that I will be listening to first and probably the most are highlighted in blue.

  • 51jx+u86hkL._AC_US160_  Train – Does Led Zepplin II – (Crush Music) – Train is one of my favorite bands and I am anxious to listen to their take on Led Zeppelin II.  The great thing about this album is all proceeds go to charity.  The charity is Family House, which offers temporary lodging for families of ill children being treated at a hospital in San Francisco, the band’s hometown.  If you want to see what else I like by Train check it this post.
