Def Leppard – “Rocket” (1989) – 7″ Single (part 7 of 7) – (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

On August 3rd, 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, ‘Hysteria’.  Little did they know this ground breaking album would go on to sell over 25 million records, produce 7 hit singles and go to #1 on the Billboard Charts. The final single from ‘Hysteria’ was “Rocket”. It was the 7th single…wow. “Rocket” was released in the UK on January 30, 1989 and went to #15. In the U.S>, it was released in March 1989 where it went to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 so it was yet another successful single.

My version is the U.S. version from the ‘Hysteria’ Singles Boxset and has the B-Side as “Women (Live)” while the UK version’s B-Side was “Release Me” which we saw a couple singles as the B-Side for the U.S. version of “Armageddon It”. Another song (like all the songs on the album) credited to the entire band as well as Mutt Lange the producer.

If you thought “Women” sounded different hold on to your hat. The song was inspired by “Burundi Black” by Burundi Steiphenson Black which had inspired the likes of Bow Wow Wow and Adam and the Ants. What started out as basically an instrumental turned in to a celebration of all the band’s influences from David Bowie, to Elton John, to T Rex, to The Stones and even Lou Reed. Lines from the song constantly referenced lines from or titles of songs from the 70’s. I loved trying to pick them out.

Kiss – ‘Icon’ (2010/2023) – Album Review (The Kiss Review Series)

Back in 2003, Kiss released, okay, the record company released a greatest hits compilation called The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss (1973-1979). It was the first of three volume set. Well, then in 2010, the label issued the ‘Icon’ Series with two volumes. The first volume is the exact same track list as ‘The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss’. There is nothing different to it at all except for crappier cover art and no inserts/liner notes. A very bare bones set. I do not recommend any of these sets as they weren’t done by Kiss per se.

However, as the collector in me, I do have the brand new, first time on vinyl version of Icon as Walmart has just released an Exclusive Silver Black Splatter vinyl. And since I collect everything vinyl for Kiss, I had to have it for my collection wouldn’t be complete. Okay, my collection is not complete anyway as I am missing a couple pieces that are extremely pricey, but that is for another time.

For now, let us go through this set and talk about the songs since we are here.

SIDE ONE:

The album kicks off with the first song of their debut, “Strutter”.  The song was written by both Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and over the years, this would be a rare experience as they would wind up writing songs by themselves.  The music of the song was based off an old Gene song called “Stanley the Parrot” which was recorded even before there was a Wicked Lester.  The song has a great opening drum fill by Peter and is an uptempo rock song that was inspired by all the sexy women in New York.  There is a great bass riff by Gene why Ace belts out the solo. Paul sings the song and shows all the confidence a lead singer should show.

Bon Jovi – ‘Wild In The Streets: Unauthorized’ (2003) – Bootleg DVD Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

I normally won’t buy a CD, DVD or anything that is strictly an interview disc. However, this was part of a set of Bon Jovi DVDs I bought and for the price of the 4 DVDs I wanted, I was okay having this thrown in along with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Legends” we reviewed a few weeks ago. This is a Bootleg DVD called ‘Wild in the Streets: Unauthorized’ and as it says on the back cover, it is approximately 55 minutes of an interview with Jon Bon Jovi. This isn’t some big history of the band, nothing like that. It is an interview of a snapshot in time of Jon Bon Jovi (not so much the band). This sounds just like the Bootleg DVD, “Rock ‘n’ Legends”…wait…this is the same damn video…THE SAME DAMN VIDEO!!! Oh, looks like I’ll just cut & paste the last review then. Easy enough.

The DVD was released (unofficially) in 2003 and actually probably should have been reviewed right after everything related to the ‘New Jersey’ album is it took place shortly thereafter. The interview of Jon takes place in Montreal, Quebec around 1989 while Jon was working with Aldo Nova on his ‘Blood on the Bricks’ album which completely surprised me as I wasn’t expecting that. Especially when Aldo was also included in the interview with Jon and by Aldo was by himself. Interspersed between the interview questions, we were able to see some behind the scenes footage of the two working in the studio and getting to hear them working on some of the songs. We learn about when Aldo and Jon met and how Aldo also worked on Jon’s solo album from the ‘Young Guns 2’ movie. It was really cool and my favorite part of the whole interview.

My Sunday Song – “Straight Down the Line” by Shaw Blades

For My Sunday Song #398, we are to the next Japanese Bonus selection in Mike’s Choices. This time around we have the song “Straight Down the Line” by the band Shaw Blades. This short lived band of two great friends consisted of Night Ranger’s Jack Blades and Styx’s own Tommy Shaw. The boys were also part of the supergroup Damn Yankees. This song was written by both and was the Japanese Bonus track on the stellar debut album simply titled Shaw Blades. Later, Tommy did include it on his album 7 Deadly Zens but with Kevin Cronan on backing vocals instead of Jack (and that is the one I have the video for…sorry).

The song seems to be about a woman Tommy loves but she doesn’t love him back. She is out trying to find herself and that one thing to complete her and they are all dead end roads like a trip to Mexico, voodoo, a new age guru, being a Hollywood Star. When she looks in the mirror, I don’t know if anyone is looking back. She seems empty. He still loves her and hopes she’s thinking of him and will come back to him. He believes she’s the one for him. I hope she finds herself. She reminds me of Jenny and Forrest Gump.

What does Mike have to say about the song…”Straight Down the Line” is the gem.  It’s the fastest song of the whole bunch, upbeat but light, and a blast in the car.  Tommy’s intricate little lightning fast guitar hook is a tasty delight.  Tracks like this are why collectors really seek out Japanese imports.  They are their own rewards.” And he isn’t wrong on his view of the song. There is a light, upbeat feeling despite the sadness in the lyrics of this lost go trying to find herself. The guitar work is great and it is such a catchy, airy song. I will have to go crank it in the car and see if he’s right about it being a blast. I have a feeling he is!

Friday New Releases – February 2, 2024

Here we are in February now. The new releases don’t slow down and we have another lot of albums to inform you about being released today. Not as many as last week, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find something hear to listen to. I think I am going to check out the Paul McCartney release, but other than that, that is it for me. Def Leppard – “Love Bites” (1988) – 7″ Single (Part 6 of 7) – (The Def Leppard Collection Series)

On August 3rd, 1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album, ‘Hysteria’.  Little did they know this ground breaking album would go on to sell over 25 million records, produce 7 hit singles and go to #1 on the Billboard Charts. The next single we will discuss is “Love Bites” which is the only Def Leppard song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Considering this was the sixth single off the album and with the success of “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, I was completely surprised by that fact (PSSOM did go to #2). The single was released everywhere in July 1988 almost a year after the albums release.

The song was originally brought to the band by the legendary producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange.  The song was a country song at the time and of course the band put their spin on it and turned it in to one of the great rock power ballads of the time.  The title for the song actually came from another song that Leppard was working on and that song later became “I Wanna Be Your Hero” which was the B-Side for “Animal” in the US. The B-Side of this song is actually a live version of the ‘Pyromania’ song “Billy’s Got a Gun”.

What I like about the song is that the guy is so in love with this person that he is actually going a little nuts.  Hell, just touching her drives him crazy.  But he isn’t sure she feels the same way.  He keeps questioning her.  Maybe it is really his own insecurities that are causing him to doubt the relationship.  Or maybe she doesn’t love him and he really senses something missing.It is such a heartfelt, emotive song.  The lyrics paint a great picture that you can visualize exactly what is going through the guys mind and you might have even experienced those feelings yourself.

January 2024 Purchases – Vinyl & CDs

Welcome to the first Purchases wrap ip of 2024. And January was a big month for CDs, thanks in part to 2nd & Charles and their great sale of Buy 5, Get 5 Free! I always take full advantage of that sale and this time was no different. And instead of only buying 5 and getting 5, I found enough to Buy 10 and get 10 Free. Here are the 10 I bought…

And then shortly after that, something I bought with my Christmas Gift Cards I received showed up. I have been wanting this vinyl for quite some time and I finally bought it. If that wasn’t enough, later in the month I was at an antique shop called ‘Sleepy Poets’ and I found the cassette for the same album. Had to buy it. Bon Jovi – ‘This Left Feels Right’ (2003) – Album Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

Once the ‘Bounce’ Tour was complete, the band was ready to do a side-project. It was originally supposed to be an acoustic album of all their hits, but someone thought why not re-imagine the hits so the band re-recorded and re-constructed numerous Bon Jovi classics in to what became known as ‘This Left Feels Right’…but does it??? The album was released on November 3, 2003 and charted at #14 in the U.S. but did much better in Europe like most of their albums did. They sold over 500,000 copies in Europe, but I have no sales figures in the U.S. I know a lot of people that did not buy this album and we will soon see why.

The band had written two new songs for this project, but Jon and Company decided to drop them as one of the songs he felt didn’t send the right message to up and coming artists. The song in question was “Last Man Standing” which had Jon singing about his anger towards the music industry. The song did see the light of day as it was re-worked for the ‘Have a Nice Day’ album. The original wound up on the box set ‘100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong’ along with the other new song “Thief of Hearts”. Okay, let’s get right to this painful journey…I guess that gives away a little of how I feel about this one. Oh well…

The album opens with the classic “Wanted Dead or Alive”. It still has an acoustic feel to it, but there is a loud electronica sound bass and a horrible ass electronic drum beat that grates on my last nerve. The backing vocals are more gang style and not just Richie’s backing vocals and it is awful. Richie’s backing vocals made this song and they destroyed it by removing him. If this would’ve been the original version, the band would’ve faded away into oblivion never to be heard from again. It is simply awful.

My Sunday Song – “Scatter” by Ratt

For My Sunday Song #397, we are on to a song by Ratt. Mike picked the Japanese bonus track for the song “Scatter” off the band’s comeback album from 2010, ‘Infestation’. Nothing better than a Ratt Infestation!! The song was written by Warren DeMartini and Stephen Pearcy like they do most of the on this album. It wasn’t much of a comeback album as it was the last album they have released so far. An amazingly good album, that saw the band turn in to mess with each other suing this one and that one. It is awful..but I’m off track. Back to the song.

I didn’t really find anything about the meaning of the song so I’m interpreting it my own way. The song makes the woman out to be thief, but I don’t think she’s a criminal. I think she’s a thief of the heart. Every time she gets to close to a guy, she runs, she…well…she scatters. She leaves the guy broken hearted as she stole his heart. Tell me what you think?

The song is a pure Ratt Rocker! You have Warren’s nasty guitar riffs and he is all over this thing and even on backing vocals along with Carlos Cavazo. Stephen’s vocals still have that grit, but at this point in time, it seems to have aged well as he still sounded like Stephen of earlier Ratt. And well, Bobby Blotzer and Robbie Crane keep the beat going effortlessly. This is a scorcher of an song, and the guitar is king on this one. This to me is actually one of the cooler songs on the album and it should’ve been on the U.S. pressing.

Mike’s review of the song when he review the album was as follows: “Their Japanese bonus track is a cool slow groove rocker called “Scatter”, with a great memorable chorus. This is the best song to me.”
