Whenever I have a single, a 12″ or anything remotely collectible musically, I like to highlight it at its place in time with the Kiss Review Series. Since we just did the album ‘Asylum, I thought it was time to pull out the 7″ Single for the one single from the album “Tears Are Falling”. There were two other promotional videos released and were on MTV, but nothing else to the radio. The song didn’t break the Top 40 hitting #51 on the Hot 100 Chart. It did go to #20 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks which is great, but not a radio darling.
It was an MTV darling as it was requested for months on MTV’s Dial Up MTV where the fans could request their favorite videos. It was eventually retired as MTV came up with a rule that a song could only be a few weeks old and not a few months so it was not played as frequently. But I saw it a lot and loved how extremely embarrassing those costumes were. Yes, even then you knew it was a little over the top.

“Tears Are Falling” was written by only Paul Stanley. And an interesting note, this is the last solo writing credit Paul has on any album until his solo album in 2006, ‘Live To Win’…how crazy is that. It was so much a Paul song that he plays the bass on it as well…no Gene. Bruce Kulick is definitely on guitar and Eric Carr is on the drums although more reserved since it is ballad. Bruce not so much as it is a “Power” ballad.

The song is about one of Paul’s girlfriends who cheated on him and no longer wanted to be with him. The song is about her telling him that and his reaction. It is a sad little song, but glad to see him dig in to this emotions and write about it. The song is sugary sweet almost to the point of being a parody of the power ballad movement. It is a great song, don’t get me wrong, but doesn’t hold up as well. Plus, Paul can’t sing this way any more as it is sung too high. The solo in it by Bruce is actually great and shows what a talent he was to have in the band. He gave the band a lot of guitar playing cred.
The B-Side of the Single was a Gene Simmons song called “Any Way You Slice It”. It is typical Gene with the inane, sexually charged lyrics and a little been there done that. The song is saved of course by Bruce because for me, anything he touches is gold. The song does have a little almost spoken interlude with Gene sort of talking through the lyrics and Eric’s drums on here are great, it is a nice change of pace in the song, but it is still feels so over-the-top. And I like the way the song ends with long drawn out guitar riffs, Eric’s drum fills, and Gene’s little ad libs. It is an okay song at best though in the end. The song was written by Gene and Howard Rice.
And there you have it. It isn’t anything much and not really a collector’s item, but still has the picture sleeve and it is still Kiss. And that is enough for me.
