Kiss – ‘Creatures of the Night: 40th Anniversary 3-LP Deluxe Edition (Color Vinyl)’ – Album Review (The Kiss Review Series)

As I said a few weeks back when I reviewed the 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set, 1982 was a pivotal year for Kiss. After the disaster of their last album, ‘Music from the Elder’, Kiss were in a do or die situation. They needed to get back to their hard rock roots and show the world that Kiss was still Kiss. Producer Michael James Jackson was brought in to produce the album and Kiss new they needed to rock. Heck, Eric Carr was telling them that all the time…and he was right. To celebrate this pivotal album, Kiss delivered the 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set, but that set was only CDs (and a lot of goodies). They also released a 3-LP Deluxe Edition Vinyl set to commemorate the album as well. And that is what we will review this time around.

The 3-LP set has the original album remastered, a set of Demos, Rarities and Outtakes and the 3rd LP is a live set with songs taken from various shows. It doesn’t have any where near as much as the box set, but if you have the Super Deluxe, you don’t need that stuff again. This set does have a 20 page booklet as well.

The album is packaged in a tri-fold album jacket with some stunning pictures included. The first two spaces have a large group photo, then on the 3rd tri-fold, you get individual shots of the members on both the front and pack of that section. Although the cover has Ace, these pictures all include Vinnie, who is actually on the album…not all songs, but most.

LP ONE: ORIGINAL ALBUM REMASTERED:

First up is the remastered original album. And let me tell you it sounds fantastic. The drums are just as powerful as before and cranked it rocks out like never before. I will not go in to detail with this album as I have reviewed it before as you can click on the links below to see the full Kiss Review Series below. This is one of my favorite albums and favorite Kiss albums and I will say after listening to this remastering, it still is one of my favorite albums of all time!! I do love it loud too!!

LP TWO: DEMOS, RARITIES AND OUTTAKES:

This is where the sweetest stuff lies in this box set. The unreleased material. It kicks off with the original demo of “Deadly Weapon” which would later become “Love’s A Deadly Weapon” off the band’s Asylum album some years later. Then you get a well known, passed around in the bootleg circles the outtake for the song “Betrayed”. The last two tracks on the first side are both instrumentals. You get Mix 4 of instrumentals and background vocals for “I’m A Legend Tonight” from their compilation release “Killers” that came out in Europe only prior to Creatures. The last one is another instrumental take for the song “Nowhere to Run” also from “Killers”.

The second side starts off with one of Kiss’ most famous unreleased tracks, the Gene demo of “It’s My Life”. Wendy O. Williams covered this song for her album W.O.W. Then it is the best unreleased track on this whole set. “Not for the Innocent” which wound up on the album ‘Lick it Up’ in a final form, but this version is something Kiss should’ve been doing more of. It was a duet version with both Gene and Paul and it is simply Fucking Awesome!! This alone was worth the price of admission for me. A huge missed opportunity for the band!! Then we get two Creatures tracks with the 2nd take of the song “Rock And Roll Hell” and then an alternate Mix (#21) of “I Love it Loud”, and both are great. Lastly, we get a track that has never come out and it is only drums and guitar for the song “Don’t Leave Me Lonely”. All of these are only a sample of what is on the full Super Deluxe Set.

LP THRESS: CREATURES TOUR LIVE ’82/’83

The third LP is a collection of live songs from the Creatures Tour in 1982-1983 fro shows in Rockford, Illinois; Sioux City, Iowa; and Houston, Texas. It would’ve been even cooler if they include the full versions of all three shows, but we will take what we can get. What I do like about this LP is that all the songs on it, except for one, are songs off the Creatures of the Night album. You get 6 live tracks of those songs. The 7th song a great version of “I Want You” from the Houston show. It is a short and sweet set, but great they way they pieced it together. It is too bad we could get all the tracks to be from the album, I mean all 9 songs, but they had the right idea.

20-PAGE BOOKLET:

In this booklet, you get 20 pages of new interviews and photos, but not as in-depth as the 80-page hardback book you get in the Super Deluxe Edition. You do get interviews with Gene & Paul on the The Plan for the album along with Michael James Jackson, the producer. You get stuff on the Tour, the music video for I Love it Loud, the guitarists, the drum sound and on the publicity surrounding the album. It really is some great stuff. You will also be fascinated with the vivid color pictures of the band. It is really a sweet booklet.

And there you have it. It isn’t meant to be the full package, but it is a great sampling of what you get in the Super Deluxe Edition. I bought this for two reasons…1) I want to own at least one of everything they’ve released on vinyl. Yes, I already had the Creatures album on vinyl, but I did not have LP 2 & 3. 2) the beautiful blue color of those vinyl was too enticing to pass up. I’m not rating this because it doesn’t compare to the other box set, but it is still sweet on its own. Here is the whole set…

Thanks for hanging around. I hope you enjoyed the walk-through. Have a wonderful day and I hope to see you all again soon.

  1. Sharp looking vinyl set Sir. If this had been available on Amazon I would have ordered this than the Box but in a way I’m glad I go that Creatures box as its friggin GOLD. So I guess things work outdoor a reason even though it cost an arm and a leg!
