You saw the title to this and you are probably saying to yourself, “John, you’ve already reviewed ‘Creatures of the Night’. Have you lost your rocker?” And the answer to that question is YES! I have reviewed ‘Creatures’ and I am off my rocker. The thing is, the band re-released the album in 1985 for some strange reason. The new line-up of Kiss with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick was riding high. The fans loved the line-up, the last album was successful, the tour went off well, so all was good in the Kiss world. Someone, somewhere in the Kiss camp thought, “Hey, we should re-release the album ‘Creatures of the Night’ because why not.” I have no idea the rational or reasoning behind this at all as it makes no sense.

If you are going to re-release it, why not put a brand new cover on the album with the band without make-up. Check! Why not stick a picture of Gene’s Ass on it in tight-fitting leather pants. Check! Here’s the thing. The picture of the band without make-up has Bruce Kulick on it and if you aren’t aware, he didn’t play on the album. I guess that isn’t a problem because the original picture on the album had Ace Frehley, and if you read my review earlier, you know he didn’t play a note on the album either. So in the end, I guess it doesn’t matter whose picture is on the cover. And here’s the other thing, it was never fun looking at the back cover because there was a giant ass staring you in the face. You felt a little grossed out looking at that….thing!!

This particular release isn’t exactly like the previous album. They did make a few changes to it. First and most noticeable is they changed the track listing a little. They swapped “Saint and Sinner” which was the #2 song on the original release with “Killer” which was at #8. Now “Killer” was #2 and “Saint and Sinner” was #8. I will be honest with you and I think that was a killer move as I do like this track list order a little better than before. So far so good.

The next thing they did was re-mix the song “Creatures of the Night”. When you listen to it, you will notice a few things. Paul’s vocals have extra reverb and an extra delay to it. The guitar sound was turned up a lot in the mix while the drums were lowered and had a higher pitch as opposed to the heavy thumping on the original. Also, the drum parts at the beginning of the song were shortened a little. Overall, no that much difference. in the song.

The rest of the album isn’t listed as Re-mixed, but I believe it has been touched up a little. The drums throughout aren’t as solid as ‘Creatures’ was. It is toned down a little. Paul’s vocals might be higher and the guitar is turned up as well just like in the track above. It sounds like they touched it all up to give it that more current 80’s Kiss sound and a sound of most music at the time. Now don’t take my word on this, my ears could be fooling me. This is only what I hear and I’m old. These changes, if there really are any, aren’t a bad thing, more of a preference of what you would like. Me, I will take the original 1982 ‘Creatures of the Night’ Release any day of the week.

And there you have it. Like I said, I’ve already reviewed these songs in detail a few weeks back, so this is a short post highlighting the re-release of the album with the new cover and the remixed song “Creatures of the Night”. Technically, no other changes were made (I only think they touched up the rest of the album).

As a bonus for the Kiss Review Series, I am going to review the very first project former members of Kiss do after they have left Kiss. We did Peter Criss’ first solo album and now it is time for Vinnie Vincent’s first album after Kiss. I will tell you this won’t work for all members of Kiss, but the majority will be covered. And actually, the next three reviews are going to be by former members of Kiss…okay, not true. One is going to be by a current member of Kiss because they are still in Kiss and haven’t had a first album after Kiss yet. So, I am picking something related to Kiss and where they first worked together. But first…Vinnie.
